What to Wear to Lunar New Year in Hong Kong

Packing philosophy

Pack for a damp, mild week out late. Hong Kong's general holidays for Lunar New Year 2027 are Saturday 6, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February; the second day falls on a Sunday, so the fourth day replaces it. NOAA NCEI's record for the airport gives February about 20°C by day and 14.9°C / 59°F at night, with drizzle on about 5 days and fog on more mornings than in January. The 2027 programme is not announced, but last year's ran to a pattern: the flower fair in Victoria Park until the early hours of New Year's Day, a night parade in Tsim Sha Tsui on the first day and harbour fireworks at 8pm on the second. So pack a trench, one pink or coral layer, navy trousers and loafers you can stand in.

What the dress code actually is

Hong Kong has no New Year dress code, but the Hong Kong Tourism Board describes the customs visitors see: many people buy new or red clothes, which stand for a fresh start and luck, and married adults give lai see, red packets, to children and unmarried relatives. For a guest, red, pink and gold all read as festive, while all black or all white reads as mourning at a family visit. A pink blouse or coral cardigan is the easy version for a guest. The flower fairs, largest in Victoria Park, stay open late and are packed on the last night, so wear shoes for standing and a bag that zips. For 2027 the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will announce the fair, and the Tourism Board the parade and fireworks.
