What to wear, city by city

Weather-grounded capsule wardrobes. Choose a city.

Start with the destination and dates on your itinerary. Our 635 monthly guides across 100 destinations help you compare weather, choose walking shoes and plan layers that work with the clothes you own. The city pages let you compare published months side by side; each monthly guide gives the detailed capsule.

Plan an autumn or winter trip

October in the desert and December in the mountains need different bags. Start with the guide that matches your dates and activities, then check the forecast before you leave.

Plan a November or December trip

Choose your city and month: pack for cold evenings in Tokyo, monsoon rain in Singapore or summer days in Cape Town.

Plan a January or February trip

Winter sun in Miami, Dubai and Cancún, Lunar New Year in Hong Kong, Carnival in Rio, Venice and New Orleans. Pick the city, then pack for the month you will land in.

Americas

Subway-grime navy, walk-friendly shoes, and layers that survive a crosstown bus.

Europe

Cobblestones, unpredictable spring, and a palette that rewards restraint.

Asia

Humidity, temple dress codes, and neighborhood uniforms that shift block to block.

Africa

Desert-edge heat, modest cuts in the medina, and a palette that reflects the sun.

Oceania

Southern-hemisphere seasons inverted — May through August is autumn-into-winter, not summer.

How these guides work

The weather averages on each monthly guide are accompanied by their recorded source. Stations, averaging periods and rain-day definitions can differ, so read the source notes when comparing destinations. Use the capsule as a starting point, then adjust it for the forecast, trip length, laundry access and your own plans.

Frequently asked questions

Choose the city, then your travel month. Compare average lows, highs and rain days before deciding on layers and shoes. Each monthly guide has a capsule, day-to-night outfit suggestions and things to avoid. Check the forecast and any venue dress code before leaving.

635 monthly guides across 100 destinations in the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. Each destination currently has 4–10 published months. Open its city guide to see the available dates; we do not show a month as covered until its guide is published.

The capsules focus on city walking, sightseeing and dinner. A work event or formal venue may need different clothing, so check the invitation or employer's policy before using an outfit suggestion for that occasion.

Each monthly guide names its recorded climate source, with a station and averaging period where available. Averages describe a typical month, not a forecast. Clothing combinations and illustrations are editorial suggestions; use equivalent pieces you already own. Additional sources are listed where an article cites them.
