Packing philosophy
Dress the costume as a coat. The Comune di Venezia's Carnevale runs from Saturday 23 January to Shrove Tuesday, 9 February 2027, with shows in Piazza San Marco and street performers across the city. You are outdoors, standing, for hours. So the Venetian answer still works: a black wool tabarro, the cloak worn with the bauta for centuries, over a warm knit and wool trousers, with a papier-mâché mask from a workshop and leather boots with grip for wet stone. A small closed bag and a brocade scarf finish it.
Venice's carnival is a cold one: fog on the lagoon, 1°C after dark, damp stone underfoot. The best costume here has always been a black wool cloak and a white mask.
What the dress code actually is
Carnival has no dress code, but the Comune di Venezia publishes Enjoy Respect Venezia, its rules for visitors, on the Carnival site: buy artisan masks rather than plastic imports, do not block bridges, and do not sit or eat on the ground in Piazza San Marco. Costume is welcome everywhere and expected at the San Marco stage, where the Maschera più Bella contest parades masked entrants each day. A visitor in a tabarro and mask is doing exactly what Venetians do; the respectful version is a mask from a Venetian workshop and a costume that does not block a calle or a bridge for photos. The 2027 programme is published on carnevale.venezia.it closer to the date; in 2026 the Festa delle Marie and the Volo dell'Angelo fell on the first weekend of February.
