Pack white tie or a ball gown, and a coat for the pavement. The Vienna Opera Ball takes over the Staatsoper on Thursday 4 February 2027 and runs into the early morning, opened by the debutantes. The dress code is published by the ball and repeated by WienTourismus: a black tailcoat with a white bow tie, or a gala uniform, for men; a floor-length evening gown for women; no short dresses, costumes or dinner jackets. The debutantes wear white gowns and tiaras, so every other woman wears colour. NOAA NCEI's Hohe Warte record gives the first fortnight of February 5.1°C by day and −0.9°C at night, so the walk from the car is near freezing. So pack the full rig, patent shoes broken in, long gloves, a small clutch and a floor-length cape.
The Opera Ball is the one night in Vienna when the dress code is not advice but a door. Tails and white tie, a gown to the floor, and nothing white unless you are debuting.
What the dress code actually is
The Opera Ball's dress code is published on opernball.at and checked at the entrance: men wear a black tailcoat with a white bow tie, with a white waistcoat and black patent shoes, and a gala uniform is the only alternative; women wear a floor-length evening gown. Dinner jackets, suits, short dresses and costumes are not accepted. White gowns belong to the debutante couples who open the ball, so choose any other colour. If you do not own tails, hire them; Vienna's formal-wear outfitters, among them Lambert Hofer, which has hired out evening wear since 1862, fit them for the ball season. Leave the wristwatch at home, keep jewellery to what you can dance in, and bring a coat long enough to cover the gown on the pavement; it goes to the cloakroom inside.
