TL;DR

Phoenix in December: 19°C / 66°F days, 7°C / 45°F nights, and 20 nights of luminarias along the Desert Botanical Garden's trails.

Do
  • Rust corduroy jacket — the walk starts near 64°F at 5pm and ends near 56°F at 9pm
  • Camel fine-gauge crew — flat under the jacket, light enough to carry on a 19°C afternoon
  • Ivory button-down — one layer at the Heard Museum, and a collar for dinner at Gertrude's
  • Olive tapered trousers — the ankle-length hem stays off the trails
  • Chestnut Chelsea boots — the Garden recommends comfortable shoes for the trails
  • Brown suede shoulder bag — both hands free for four and a half hours on foot
Don't
  • Dressing for 5pm — by 9pm the hourly normal is 56.0°F and you are still walking
  • Booking 24 or 25 December — neither night is on the Luminarias calendar
  • Heels or open sandals — the evening is spent on the Garden's trails after dark
  • Walking up to Gertrude's — the Garden calls reservations highly recommended on Luminarias nights

Pack for a garden after dark. December is Phoenix's coldest month on NOAA NCEI's normals for Sky Harbor, with a 66.2°F afternoon and a night that falls to 45.3°F. Las Noches de las Luminarias opens at 5pm, about 20 minutes before a mid-month sunset, and closes at 9:30pm, so the evening you dress for runs from NOAA's hourly normal of 64.4°F at 5pm to 56.0°F at 9pm. The Desert Botanical Garden promises "thousands of glowing luminarias, radiant light displays, expanded live entertainment and performances" along its trails, and its own FAQ recommends "comfortable shoes for the trails". Build the trip around one rust corduroy jacket, a camel crew and closed boots.

The Garden opens its luminaria walk at 5pm, about 20 minutes before sunset, and you leave it at 9:30 in air about eight degrees Fahrenheit cooler. Put the camel crew on under the rust corduroy before you go in, not halfway round.

The capsule

  1. Rust corduroy jacket, cropped
    01
    Rust corduroy jacket, cropped

Your layer for the walk. Luminarias runs from 5 to 9:30pm, and NOAA's hourly normals fall from 64.4°F at 5pm to 56.0°F (13.3°C) at 9pm, with 6.8 nights at or below 40°F in an average December. Cotton corduroy keeps that evening air out without the weight of a wool coat, and a cropped cut clears the bag strap at your hip.

  2. Camel Fine-Gauge Crew Knit
    02
    Camel fine-gauge crew-neck sweater

Luminaria tan, in fine wool. A fine gauge lies flat under the corduroy jacket on the walk and over the ivory shirt at dinner, without the bulk a chunky knit adds inside a sleeve. On a 66.2°F afternoon it comes off and goes in the bag; by 8pm, when the hourly normal reaches 57.4°F, you want it back on.

  3. Ivory Cotton Button-Down
    03
    Ivory cotton button-down shirt

For the daytime, and for the collar at night. A 66.2°F afternoon at the Heard Museum, which opened on 26 December 1929, needs one layer, and a cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled is it. After dark the button-down collar sits out over the camel crew, which looks finished when you sit down to dinner at Gertrude's inside the Garden.

  4. Olive green knit sweater vest with a crew neck and a tie at each side

Olive knit vest with side ties

Saguaro green, as a middle layer that leaves your arms free. Over the ivory shirt on a 19°C afternoon, a knit vest warms your core without the sleeves of a sweater, and under the corduroy jacket after 8pm it adds warmth without bunching at the elbow. A tie at each side pulls it in, so it sits flat over a tucked shirt.

  5. Olive Straight-Leg Utility Trousers
    05
    Olive cotton-twill trousers, tapered

One pair for both temperatures. Cotton twill is warm enough for a 56°F walk and cool enough for a 66°F afternoon, so these cover the day and the night. A tapered leg that stops at the ankle keeps the hem off the trails and clear of your boots, and olive works with the rust jacket, the camel crew and the ivory shirt alike.

  6. Terracotta knit midi dress, long sleeves

For dinner at Gertrude's. During Luminarias the Garden says "reservations for Gertrude’s by Tarbell’s are highly recommended", so plan a seated meal inside the event. Long sleeves and a midi length cover you for the walk back out at 56°F, a knit packs without creasing, and terracotta sits under the rust jacket while the Chelsea boots handle the trails.

  7. Chestnut Leather Ankle Boots
    07
    Chestnut leather Chelsea boots

The Garden's FAQ asks you to bring "comfortable shoes for the trails", and a Luminarias evening runs four and a half hours on foot. Chelsea boots pull on with no laces to retie in the dark, closed leather keeps trail grit out, and a low stacked heel stays steady on a path lit by lanterns. Chestnut goes with olive, rust and terracotta.

  8. Dark brown suede shoulder bag with a curved flap and a buckled strap

Both hands stay free on a long walk, and the Garden's FAQ suggests a camera for the views. This bag carries the camel crew once it comes off in the afternoon, plus a phone and a card. Picnicking items are not permitted, so leave the cooler at the hotel; dark brown suede goes with the chestnut boots and the rust jacket.

Frequently asked questions

Mild by day, cold by dawn and mostly dry. NOAA NCEI's normals for Phoenix Sky Harbor (USW00023183) make December the coldest month of the year, with an afternoon high of 66.2°F (19.0°C), a low of 45.3°F (7.4°C), and the year's lowest daily normals, a 65.1°F high and a 44.4°F low, falling between 20 and 27 December. Rain totals 0.74 inches (19mm) on about 4 days. The hourly normals put 5pm at 64.4°F, 8pm at 57.4°F, 9pm at 56.0°F and the coldest hour, 7am, at 47.1°F. An average December brings 6.8 nights at or below 40°F but only 0.1 at or below 32°F, which NWS Phoenix puts down to the urban heat island. Sunrise moves from 7:15am to 7:32am over the month, and sunset from 5:20pm to 5:31pm.

A rust corduroy jacket, a camel fine-gauge crew, an ivory cotton button-down, an olive knit vest, olive tapered trousers, a terracotta knit midi dress, chestnut Chelsea boots and a dark brown suede shoulder bag. That covers a 19°C afternoon in the city, a Luminarias walk from about 64°F at 5pm to 56°F at 9pm, and dinner at Gertrude's inside the Garden. Leave the sandals at home: the Garden's FAQ asks for comfortable shoes for the trails, and you spend hours on them after dark.

A knit under a jacket, and boots you can walk in for four hours. The Desert Botanical Garden's 2026 season runs 27–29 November; 4–6, 11–13, 16–23 and 26–31 December; and 1–3 January, from 5 to 9:30pm each night, with Members Weekend on 4–6 December. The event "was first introduced in 1978, greeting 600 guests", and now lines the trails with more than 8,000 luminarias. General adult tickets cost $39.95–$44.95 depending on the night. The FAQ's only clothing rule is "Shirts and shoes are required for all guests", so dress for the temperature: NOAA's hourly normals run from 64.4°F at 5pm to 56.0°F at 9pm.

Early December for weekend nights at the Garden, late December for the most dates and the coldest stretch. Luminarias runs on the weekends of 4–6 and 11–13 December, the first of them Members Weekend, then every night from 16 to 23 December and again from 26 to 31 December, skipping Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Sonoran Santa and Mrs. Claus are at the Garden from 18 to 23 December. NOAA's daily normals reach their lowest between 20 and 27 December. On Saturday 26 December the Heard Museum turns 97; in its own words, "Five brief lines in the Arizona Republican newspaper announced the opening of the Heard Museum on December 26, 1929."

December is colder, by a little. NOAA's Sky Harbor normals give December a 66.2°F (19.0°C) afternoon and a 45.3°F (7.4°C) low, against January's 67.6°F (19.8°C) and 46.0°F (7.8°C), and December is colder at every hour of the hourly normals: 9pm averages 56.0°F against 57.3°F. January has more nights at or below 32°F (0.4 against 0.1) but fewer at or below 40°F (4.7 against 6.8). Both months bring rain on about 4 days, and January's 0.87 inches is a little more than December's 0.74. Luminarias carries on for three nights, 1–3 January, and on 23 January Barrett-Jackson starts nine days of auctions at WestWorld of Scottsdale; our January guide dresses those.

Layers for a cold dawn and a warm noon, in a city whose textile history is kept at the Heard Museum. Maie Bartlett Heard and Dwight Bancroft Heard opened the Heard Museum on 26 December 1929, and the museum writes that "The major American Indian textile traditions in the Southwest are the Diné (Navajo) and Pueblo". It names regional weaving styles such as Two Grey Hills, Ganado, Crystal, Chinle and Teec Nos Pos. The Desert Botanical Garden is a decade younger: in 1939, it says, "a small group of passionate Phoenicians" founded it, among them the botanist Gustaf Starck and Gertrude Divine Webster.
