Packing philosophy
Dress for heat that does not break at night. NOAA NCEI's record for Santos Dumont gives February 31.2°C by day and 24.4°C at night, the hottest month on that record, with thunder on about 6 days. Carnival runs from the Série Ouro on 5 and 6 February to the Grupo Especial on 7, 8 and 9 February, four schools a night, each parading for over an hour, and the champions' parade on the 13th. That is a night in the stands until the early hours, still near 24°C. By day the street blocos take over, as they have since Riotur's street carnival opened on 16 January. The city health department's advice sets the base: high-SPF sunscreen, a cap or hat, light clothes and closed, comfortable shoes. Add sequins.
Carnival asks for two outfits: one for a bloco under the noon sun, one for a Sambódromo seat at 24°C after midnight. Sequins cover both if your shoes can walk.
What the dress code actually is
The Sambódromo has no dress code for the arquibancadas and frisas; a fantasia, a Carnival costume, is as welcome in the stands as shorts and a tank. Camarotes, the private boxes, set their own rules, and most hand guests a shirt they must wear inside, so check yours. Expect bag checks at the gates, and check LIESA's list for what you may bring in 2027. On the street, blocos have their own traditions, from Cordão da Bola Preta's black and white spots to themed costumes, and a fantasia is the norm. The line to hold: skip costumes that caricature a people or a religion, including Indigenous headdresses and Afro-Brazilian religious dress worn as fancy dress. Glass is taken off revellers at the blocos, so carry cans or plastic.

04Small tan leather zip belt bagPhone, card and cash, zipped and worn in front where you can feel it in a crowd. A belt bag leaves both hands free and clears a Sambódromo bag check.
05Natural open-weave crochet straw hatA hat is on the health department's list for daytime blocos under the February sun. Open crochet straw lets heat out and crushes into the belt bag for the Sambódromo at night.
06Men's fuchsia palm-print camp-collar shirtThe menswear version of a fantasia. A loose viscose camp shirt moves air at 24°C in a packed stand, and fuchsia and gold palms match a partner in sequins.
07Fuchsia and gold sequin headband with feathersFeathers are Carnival's signature, and a headband carries them without a full costume. It sits on your head in a crowd, where a held prop would be lost, and it swaps for the straw hat at sunset.
