What to Wear in Rio de Janeiro in February

Pack for heat, a daily storm and a street party. NOAA NCEI's global summary of the day for Santos Dumont airport, averaged over 1991–2020, gives February 31.2°C by day and 24.4°C at night, the hottest month on that record, with about 20 days above 30°C and thunder reported on about 6. Alerta Rio's summer showers come short and heavy, mostly in the afternoon. The city grades heat on its NC1 to NC5 scale, set on the heat index, and last year Rio entered Calor 3, with heat-index readings of 36 to 40°C expected for at least three days, at 11:40am on 13 February, the eve of Carnaval. Riotur schedules the 2027 street carnival to start on 16 January; last year's ran to about 460 parades. The city health department's Carnaval advice sets the kit: SPF 50 or higher, a cap or hat, light clothes and closed, comfortable shoes. Pack exactly that, plus a shell and a swimsuit for the mornings.
February in Rio is Carnaval in the hottest weeks of the year. Wear closed shoes and a hat to the blocos, keep a shell for the afternoon storm, and swim before the sun gets high.

In a street parade people tread on your feet for hours, and a rubber toe cap takes it where a sandal leaves toes bare, and last year's street-carnival plan had agents seizing glass bottles at the blocos because they cause accidents. 05White cotton bucket hatThe health department's Carnaval advice asks for a cap or hat along with sunscreen of SPF 50 or higher. A soft cotton-twill brim shades your neck and ears in a bloco that moves at walking pace under the midday sun, folds into a pocket for the metro, and stays white with the shorts.
06Chartreuse hooded packable shellThunder is reported on about 6 February days at Santos Dumont on NOAA NCEI's record, and Alerta Rio's summer showers come short and heavy, mostly after lunch. A hooded shell folds into the belt bag and goes on in a bloco, where there is no room to open an umbrella. Chartreuse matches the lime tank.
07White linen midi dressFor the nights. Liesa's Grupo Especial parades on Sunday 7, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February, four schools a night, and the champions return on Saturday the 13th. A night in the Sapucaí stands at 24°C wants loose linen: a tie belt adjusts after a day of heat, and short sleeves keep your shoulders covered at an early dinner.

The city grades heat from NC1 to NC5 on the heat index, which combines temperature and humidity; its bands are heat-index values, not air temperatures. Sunset moves from about 6:40pm on 1 February to 6:23pm on the 28th. Our January page uses INMET's hourly records at Forte de Copacabana, a beach station that runs 0.5 to 2°C cooler than the airport.

Liesa's Grupo Especial parades on Sunday 7, Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 February 2027, four schools a night: União de Maricá opens on the Sunday and Mangueira closes on the Tuesday. The top schools return for the champions' parade on Saturday 13 February, and Ash Wednesday falls on the 10th. Carnaval Tuesday is a state holiday in Rio de Janeiro under a 2008 state law. For the stands, wear loose linen or cotton and closed sneakers; the parades run late on nights that average 24°C. For the blocos, follow the health department: closed shoes, a cap or hat, SPF 50 or higher, water and your ID.
Early February, if you came for Carnaval. The Sambódromo nights are 7, 8 and 9 February and the champions' parade is the 13th, and Riotur schedules the street carnival to start on 16 January. Last year Carnaval Saturday opened with the Cordão da Bola Preta in Centro from 9am, with roads closed from 5am. Late February is quieter, and sunset slips from about 6:40pm on the 1st to 6:23pm on the 28th. Book the first half early: Liesa prices seats in most special grandstand sectors at R$250 a night.
February is slightly hotter and drier. On the same NOAA NCEI record for Santos Dumont, February averages 31.2°C by day and 24.4°C at night against January's 30.6°C and 24.3°C, with rain or drizzle on about 11 days against 14 and thunder on about 6 in both. Our January guide reads a different station, INMET's hourly records at Forte de Copacabana, which give January 30.6°C and 23.3°C; on that record February is drier too, with 96mm over about 7 days against January's 133mm over about 10. January has the free Sambódromo rehearsals; February has the parades.
Carnaval clothes in the street and very little on the sand. The Cordão da Bola Preta, the black-dot bloco, opened last year's Carnaval Saturday in Centro; Jornal Gazeta do Rio reported about 500,000 people at its 107th parade, by the organisers' count. If you join it, wear white with black dots: Agência Brasil describes the bloco, founded in 1918, as keeping those colours from its first parade. Away from the blocos, dress for the heat the health department describes: light clothes, a cap or hat and closed shoes.
