What Is Smart Casual?

A jacket instead of a hoodie, loafers instead of trainers: effort, with leeway.

Updated
TL;DR

Smart casual means effort without a suit. Debrett's calls it a host's plea to leave the leisure clothes at home.

Do
  • A jacket or blazer with chinos or tailored trousers and an open-necked collared shirt: Debrett's formal smart casual, no tie needed
  • A dress, or a skirt or trousers with a silk or printed shirt: Debrett's daytime list for women
  • Loafers, brogues, flats or kitten heels: leather shoes carry the 'smart' half of the code
  • Dark, tailored jeans under a tailored jacket, if you wear jeans at all: Debrett's 2025 line
  • An oatmeal fine-gauge cardigan over the silk shirt: Debrett's names 'chic cardigans' for daytime smart casual
Don't
  • Everyday trainers, jogging pants, hoodies, beachwear or flip-flops: the leisure clothes Debrett's says the code exists to rule out
  • Faded or ripped jeans: Debrett's lets in only a clean, dark, well-fitting pair
  • A full-length sequinned gown: Debrett's 2024 calls it over the top for smart casual

What does smart casual mean?

Smart casual is mainly a British social code; in America it is mostly an office one. Cambridge Dictionary labels the phrase UK and defines it as clothing that is 'neat and stylish, but not too formal', with the example 'The restaurant's dress code is smart casual.' Debrett's called it 'by far the most common of all dress codes' in 2023, and in January 2025 described it as a host's request that guests not turn up in everyday leisure clothes: trainers, jogging pants, sweatshirts, hoodies, beachwear and flip-flops. The Emily Post Institute's attire guide has no smart casual entry, so American usage took its meaning from the office. Indeed's 2026 career guide treats it as business casual plus 'trendy clothing pieces such as leather sneakers, bold prints, and statement accessories'. Offices then carried the code into everyday life. On 5 March 2019 Goldman Sachs announced a 'firm-wide flexible dress code' to about 36,000 staff, and Debrett's wrote in 2023 that chinos, jackets and open-necked shirts spread through the City of London after it. On 2 February 2023 the Jockey Club dropped formal dress codes at its 15 racecourses. What is left has two ends: a jacket and possibly a tie at the formal end, dark jeans and a polo shirt at the informal one.

Smart casual is defined by what you leave at home.

Where smart casual sits on the ladder

Business casual is the American office code: slacks, khakis or a skirt with a dress shirt, blouse or polo, in Emily Post's guide. Indeed says smart casual adds trendier pieces such as leather sneakers and bold prints, and tells you to err toward business casual until you know a workplace.
Smart casual vs casual
Debrett's (2022) tells hosts who welcome jeans, shorts, flip-flops and sports clothes to write 'come as you are'. Smart casual is the code that rules those out.

Smart casual for women

  1. Navy unstructured blazer
    01

Debrett's puts a jacket at the formal end of smart casual, and Indeed's 2026 guide names an unstructured dark blazer as the piece that looks smart while feeling casual. It also squares up dark jeans, the one way Debrett's 2025 lets denim in.

  2. Ivory silk shirt
    02
    Ivory silk shirt

Debrett's daytime list pairs dresses, skirts or trousers with silk or printed shirts. Silk in place of a T-shirt is the single swap that moves an outfit from casual to smart.

  3. Dark indigo straight-leg jeans, no rips

Debrett's changed its answer in January 2025: jeans are 'fine' if 'tailored and well-fitted', worn with a tailored jacket. Its 2022 to 2024 pieces called denim too casual, so keep them for daytime and the relaxed end of the code.

  4. Midi wrap dress in a small sage-and-white print, cotton or silk

Debrett's daytime list starts with dresses, and its 2022 heatwave advice, which it applies to social events marked smart casual, names a summer dress in cotton, silk or linen. A small print keeps it daytime; a sequin would tip it into evening.

  5. Oatmeal fine-gauge cardigan
    05

Debrett's names 'chic cardigans' for daytime smart casual and says sweaters are fine when it's cold. A fine gauge over the silk shirt reads polished; a chunky knit reads weekend.

  6. Tan leather loafers

Debrett's tells women to drop high heels for 'kitten heel, flats or loafers' at daytime smart casual. Leather, not canvas, is what separates a loafer from the trainers the code rules out.

Smart casual for men

  1. 01
    Jacket or blazer

Debrett's (2025): 'The best option is to wear a jacket or blazer.' A velvet or Nehru jacket with a patterned shirt is its suggestion for the dressier end.

  2. 02
    Chinos or tailored trousers

On Debrett's list for every version of the code. In summer, its 2022 heatwave advice allows loose cotton or linen chinos in a light colour.

  3. 03
    Open-necked shirt with a collar

Ties are 'generally not necessary', says Debrett's. At the relaxed end a polo or printed shirt works, and a plain T-shirt only under a jacket.

  4. 04
    Loafers, brogues or lace-ups

Debrett's formal smart casual rules out trainers and sandals. At the relaxed end it allows smart trainers or deck shoes, never flip-flops.

Smart casual in winter and summer

Winter. London's December averages 9°C/48°F by day and 3°C/37°F at night (Met Office), so the coat is part of the outfit. Debrett's is specific: choose an overcoat rather than an anorak or parka, and wear a sweater if it's cold. A fine merino under the blazer keeps the line; a fleece breaks it.

Summer. New York's July averages 29°C/84°F by day (NOAA). Debrett's June 2025 guidance says you're generally not expected to wear a tie, and lets knee-length tailored shorts through, never beach shorts. Its 2022 heatwave list adds light cotton or linen chinos, a summer dress in cotton, silk or linen, and no tights.

Reading the invitation

  • “Smart casual” — A jacket or a dressy top, no sportswear. A printed card points to the formal end of the code, says Debrett's (2025).
  • “No dress code at all” — For a drinks party, Debrett's (2024) says most guests 'will default to smart casual clothing'.
  • “Come as you are” — The step below: Debrett's (2022) says hosts write it when jeans, shorts and sports clothes are welcome.
  • “Lounge suits” — The step above in British usage: an ordinary business suit, in Debrett's words 'of the sort worn in a formal business context'.

A suggested look — navy unstructured blazer, ivory silk shirt, dark indigo straight-leg jeans, tan leather loafers.

What to avoid

  • everyday trainers, jogging pants, hoodies and flip-flops — Debrett's 2025 names these among the leisure clothes a smart casual host wants left at home
  • ripped or faded jeans — Debrett's allows denim only when it is dark, clean and well-fitted
  • a full-length sequinned gown — Debrett's 2024 calls it over the top for smart casual
  • a parka or anorak over a good outfit — Debrett's asks for an overcoat in winter
  • opting out because the code is vague — Debrett's says a refusal to comply 'looks rude and contemptuous'; ask a fellow guest or the host instead

Frequently asked questions

Neat, stylish clothes that stop short of a suit. Cambridge Dictionary labels the phrase UK and defines it as 'neat and stylish, but not too formal'. Debrett's (2025) describes the code as a host's request that you not turn up in everyday leisure clothes: trainers, jogging pants, sweatshirts, hoodies, beachwear or flip-flops. In practice that means a jacket or blazer with chinos or tailored trousers, or a dress, skirt or trousers with a silk or printed shirt.

Yes, if they are dark, clean and well-fitted. Debrett's January 2025 guidance says 'It's fine to wear jeans, as long as they're tailored and well-fitted', and suggests a tailored jacket and smart accessories to offset them. Its earlier pieces (2022 to 2024) said denim was too casual, so the code has softened. Keep jeans for daytime and skip anything faded, baggy or ripped.

Only at the relaxed end, and only clean, smart ones. Debrett's formal smart casual asks for loafers, brogues or lace-ups, 'not trainers or sandals'; its informal version allows smart trainers or deck shoes. Indeed's US workplace guide includes clean leather, canvas or suede sneakers. If the invitation is printed or the event is in the evening, wear leather shoes.

Business casual is an American office code; smart casual is mainly a British social one. Emily Post's guide defines business casual as slacks, khakis or a skirt with a dress shirt, blouse or polo, and has no smart casual entry. Indeed's 2026 guide says smart casual adds trendier pieces, such as leather sneakers, bold prints and statement accessories, and tells you to err toward business casual until you know a workplace's code.

No. Debrett's (June 2025) says that at a smart casual event 'you are generally not expected to wear a tie (you should just look as if you've made an effort)'. A jacket matters more than a tie: Debrett's calls a jacket or blazer 'the best option' for men.

For daytime, Debrett's suggests dresses, or skirts and trousers with silk or printed shirts or chic cardigans, with kitten heels, flats or loafers instead of high heels. For an evening event it allows a more decorative cocktail-style dress, evening trousers, statement jewellery and higher heels. A navy blazer over a silk shirt and dark tailored jeans covers most daytime invitations.

Knee-length tailored shorts, in summer, pass. Debrett's June 2025 guidance allows shorts 'of the knee-length, tailored office variety rather than floppy beach shorts', and suggests asking the host or fellow guests if you're unsure.
