What to Wear in Aspen in November

Pack for a town first and a ski weekend second. NOAA's Aspen 1SW station, at 7,908 ft, gives November afternoons of 5.3°C and nights of -7°C / 19°F, with 20.5 inches of snow across about 10 wet days. The high country shuts first. CDOT typically closes Independence Pass on or near 7 November, and Pitkin County locks the Maroon Creek and Castle Creek gates on or around the 15th, after which Maroon Lake is a 7-mile walk or ski from T Lazy 7. The lifts come last: Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open on Thanksgiving Day, 26 November, with Highlands and Buttermilk waiting until 12 December. So: a glossy puffer that sheds snow, a Fair Isle knit, white jeans tucked into shearling-cuffed boots, and gloves saved for the chairlift.

   Wear it every day of the trip. At -7°C / 19°F after dark, down is the warmest layer you can pack for its bulk, and a glossy shell lets the month's snow slide off instead of soaking in. Klaus Obermeyer, who founded his company in Aspen in 1947, made a ski parka from the goose-down comforter his mother gave him for the journey to America.

   Cream wool ski sweater with a navy-and-red Fair Isle yoke

   One knit, two jobs. Under the open puffer it is the sweater you wear to dinner in town once a 5°C / 41°F afternoon has fallen below freezing, and on 26 November it goes under the same jacket on the first chairlift of the season. The navy-and-red yoke is the only pattern in a capsule of black, white, oat and brown, so nothing else needs one.

   Oat merino long-sleeve crew base layer

   Aspen Snowmass recommends non-cotton base layers, and an oat merino crew is one that also passes in town. Wear it alone under the puffer on a 5°C / 41°F walk down Galena Street, then under the Fair Isle knit once the sun goes, at about five after the clocks go back on 1 November. Merino stays warm on a day the cuffs get damp.

   White slim straight jeans

   Slim and straight, so the leg tucks inside a lace-up snow boot and the hem never meets the slush that about 10 wet days leave on the sidewalks. White keeps the lower half as light as the cream sweater, which is what makes a black puffer look chosen rather than issued. Wear the same pair to Thanksgiving dinner on the 26th, boots and all.

   Brown suede snow boots with a shearling cuff

   Pack the tread before anything else. NOAA's Aspen station averages 20.5 inches of snow in November, and with afternoons at 5°C / 41°F and nights at -7°C / 19°F, whatever melts at noon has frozen by dinner. Brown waterproofed suede on a deep rubber sole grips that, the cream shearling cuff closes over the jeans, and after the 15th the pair walks you up the gated Maroon Creek Road from T Lazy 7.

   Worn across the body, a dark chocolate saddle bag rides under an open puffer and leaves both hands free for a railing on an icy step. The buckle flap stays shut when you brush snow off a bench, and there is room for a phone, a card and the ski pass on the 26th. Its brown matches the boots and the beanie, the three warm notes against black and white.

   Brown hand-crocheted wool beanie

   After sunset, which comes at about five once the clocks go back and near quarter to five by the 30th, the town heads for -7°C / 19°F and your ears feel it first. A brown hand-crocheted wool beanie covers them and rolls into a puffer pocket at a 5°C / 41°F noon. Keep it for town. From 26 November a helmet does that job on the mountain.

   Black insulated leather gloves

   Save these for the 26th, when Aspen Mountain and Snowmass run their first chairlifts of the season and a thin town glove leaves your fingers numb before the top. Black insulated leather with a quilted back keeps your fingers useful for poles and zips, and the knit cuff tucks inside the puffer's sleeve. Before Thanksgiving they cover a snowy walk from T Lazy 7 toward Maroon Lake.
