What to Wear in Las Vegas in November

Pack for two shifts. NOAA's figures for Harry Reid International put November at 19.5°C by early afternoon and 8.5°C at dawn, with about 2 days of rain, so the weather is rarely the problem. The clock is. Daylight saving ends at 2am on Sunday 1 November, and sunset falls from about a quarter to six to about a quarter to five overnight. The same day Red Rock's Scenic Drive moves to a 5pm close, and three weeks later the Formula 1 race starts at 8pm on the Strip, while the desert is sliding toward its low. So the morning wants black sneakers and red sunglasses at the 6am gate. The night wants olive leather over a cream knit, wide trousers and burgundy socks for two hours in a grandstand.

   Zip it at 8pm on 21 November, when the Grand Prix starts and the air is sliding from a 19.5°C afternoon toward an 8.5°C low. A cropped olive leather jacket with a spread collar stops the wind in an open grandstand and ends at the waist, so it sits cleanly over a high-rise wide trouser. Olive is the colour the burgundy socks and red sunglasses are chosen against.

   Cream ribbed knit crew, relaxed

   Wear it at both ends of the day. A relaxed cream ribbed crew is the whole top half at a 1pm patio lunch in 20°C / 68°F sun, and after dark it goes under the leather, its hem showing below the cropped jacket. Cream is the light note in a capsule of olive, grey-taupe, dark brown and black, and it stops the evening look going dark from collar to shoe.

   One pair covers a 6am start at Red Rock and an 8pm grandstand. A very wide, high-rise pleated leg in heathered grey-taupe lets air through in the 19.5°C afternoon and still covers you to the shoe once you sit down after dark. Pleats hold their line after a morning in a car seat, and grey-taupe sits between the olive jacket and the burgundy socks without fighting either.

   Sit down in wide trousers and the hem rides up, which is how two hours of a race that starts at 8pm leaves your ankles bare as the night cools.
