TL;DR

Cabo San Lucas in December: 27°C / 81°F days, 14°C / 57°F nights, and the week the bay's season opens.

Do
  • White cotton cable sweater — an early whale boat leaves near the 14°C / 57°F low
  • Cream straight chinos — a straight leg stays put on a deck running at speed
  • Tan leather boat shoes — rubber soles grip a deck wet with spray
  • Sand cotton-twill cap — it stays on where a wide brim lifts off
  • Cobalt short-sleeve surf suit — for swimming inside the bay under a green flag
  • Terracotta linen wrap skirt — knee length for a parade night on your feet
Don't
  • Swimming from a whale-watching boat — NOM-131 bans swimming and diving during a watch
  • A kayak or paddleboard out to the whales — the same standard bars both from whale watching
  • The water on a red flag — Zofemat says it means conditions are not safe
  • A T-shirt alone on an early boat — the deck adds its own wind to a 14°C / 57°F start

Pack for a week on the water. FICC Los Cabos, the international film and creativity festival, holds its 14th edition on 9–13 December 2026. In 2025 the municipality's Mar y Christmas parade put 25 lit boats on the bay on Sunday 14 December, and last winter SEMARNAT opened whale watching on the 15th. SMN's averages for its Cabo San Lucas station give 27.4°C by day and a night that falls to 14.0°C / 57°F. An early boat leaves in that cool and moves fast. Visit Los Cabos makes the same call: "A light sweater for evening strolls, swimwear for impromptu dips, and sun protection essentials should find their way into every suitcase."

Cabo's December turns on one week. The film festival opens on the 9th, last year's lit boats crossed the bay on the 14th, and the whale boats went out on the 15th. Dress for a cool deck in the morning and a crowded Marina after dark.

The capsule

  1. White cotton cable sweater, crew neck

An early whale boat leaves soon after sunrise, 6:53am on 15 December, while the town is still near the station's 14°C / 57°F low, and a boat at speed makes its own wind. A cotton cable knit holds warmth through that first hour, shrugs off salt spray and washes in a hotel sink. It comes off once the afternoon climbs to 27.4°C.

  2. Cream cotton straight-leg chinos with a pressed crease
    02
    Cream cotton chinos, straight leg

Last winter's SEMARNAT notice kept whale watching out of a 2 km zone round El Arco and out of the port, so the boats worked open water beyond the Arch. A straight leg stays put on a deck running at speed, where a wide leg flaps and soaks up spray. Cream cotton twill cuts the wind under the sweater and goes straight on to lunch in town.

  3. Tan Boat Shoes
    03
    Tan leather boat shoes

Visit Los Cabos notes that El Arco is "accessible only by boat from Medano Beach or the Cabo San Lucas Marina", so the Arch, Lover's Beach and the whale boats all start with a step down into a boat. Rubber soles grip a deck wet with spray where sandals slide, and the laces round the collar pull tight so a shoe stays on. Tan leather dries without marking.

  4. Sand cotton-twill cap
    04
    Sand cotton-twill cap

A wide straw brim lifts off the first time the boat opens its throttle; a cap with a strap at the back stays on. A whale boat works open water, outside the 2 km zone round El Arco, on an open deck with no shade. Sand twill matches the chinos, and a cap rinses clean of salt in the sink with the sweater.

  5. Cobalt short-sleeve zip-front surf swimsuit

Swim inside the bays. Visit Los Cabos points to the protected water at Médano Beach and at Lover's Beach near El Arco, and tells you to "look for the green flags". Short sleeves cover your shoulders on a snorkel at Lover's Beach, and the front zip opens on the ride back. The sea off Cabo San Lucas averages about 25°C in December.

  6. Oversized White Linen Button-Down
    06
    Oversized white linen shirt

This goes over the surf suit in the water taxi back from Lover's Beach, under the cable sweater on the morning boat, and tucked into the wrap skirt at night. Turned-back sleeves shade your forearms through a 27.4°C afternoon without the weight of a jacket. Loose linen dries quickly after spray, and white matches the sweater it sits under.

  7. Terracotta linen wrap skirt, knee length

Parade night is spent standing. In 2025, 25 lit boats crossed the bay on Sunday 14 December while families watched from the Marina, Playa El Médano and Playa Corsario, and the night ended with fireworks. A knee-length wrap moves easily in a crowd, the side tie loosens after dinner, and terracotta reads as evening against the white linen shirt.

  8. Bone-white leather crossed-strap flat sandals
    08

In 2025 the parade crowd stood on two beaches, El Médano and Playa Corsario, as well as the Marina. A buckled ankle strap keeps a flat sandal on in soft sand, where a slide gets left behind. The low stacked heel takes the Marina walkway afterwards, and bone-white leather sits with the linen shirt without the glare of optic white.

Day to night

Morning

Whale-boat morning. White cable sweater over the white linen shirt · cream chinos · tan boat shoes · sand cap. Boats leave from the Marina or Médano Beach, and under last winter's notice they kept out of a 2 km zone round El Arco. Sunrise on 15 December is at 6:53am; the sweater comes off by late morning.

Evening

Parade or festival night. Terracotta wrap skirt · white linen shirt tucked in · bone-white sandals · the cable sweater for the walk home. Sunset on 15 December is at 5:37pm. In 2025 the lit boats crossed the bay on Sunday the 14th, watched from the Marina, El Médano and Playa Corsario.

A suggested look — white cable-knit crew sweater, white linen shirt, cream straight-leg chinos, tan leather boat shoes, sand cotton cap.

What to avoid

  • Swimming or diving from a whale-watching boat
  • A kayak or paddleboard trip out to the whales
  • The water on a red flag
  • A T-shirt alone on an early boat
  • Booking parade night before the municipality announces it

Frequently asked questions

Warm by day and cool at dawn. SMN, Mexico's national weather service, gives its Cabo San Lucas station (3005) a December afternoon of 27.4°C / 81°F and a night that falls to 14.0°C / 57°F, with 7.3mm of rain on about one day. The airport near San José del Cabo runs about 2°C warmer at night. Sunrise moves from 6:44am on 1 December to 7:00am on the 31st and sunset from 5:34pm to 5:45pm, about 10h 45m of daylight. The sea off Cabo San Lucas averages about 25°C in December, on NOAA's sea-surface analysis.

For the boat: a white cotton cable sweater over an oversized white linen shirt, cream straight chinos, tan leather boat shoes and a sand cotton-twill cap. For the bay: a cobalt short-sleeve surf suit under the same shirt. For a parade or festival night: a terracotta linen wrap skirt and bone-white ankle-strap sandals, with the sweater for after the 5:37pm sunset. That covers a morning near 14°C / 57°F, a 27.4°C afternoon and a night out on the Marina.

SEMARNAT sets the dates each winter in a notice in the Diario Oficial. Last winter's opened Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo on 15 December 2025 and ran to 30 April 2026. Because of heavy boat traffic it also kept whale watching out of the port and out of "una zona de 2 kilómetros (km) alrededor del Arco de Cabo San Lucas", a 2 km zone around the Arch. The federal standard, NOM-131, notes that humpbacks concentrate in the Los Cabos region, and limits each watch to 30 minutes per whale and four boats at a time, at 60 m for boats under 10 m and 80 m for larger ones. It bans swimming and diving during a watch, and kayaks and paddle craft for whale watching. Wear the sweater, the boat shoes and the cap; keep the surf suit for the bay.

Mid-December holds the bay's week. FICC Los Cabos runs Wednesday 9 to Sunday 13 December and calls itself "El cine como punto de encuentro entre la música, el arte digital, la animación y la comunidad", film as a meeting point for music, digital art, animation and community. The Mar y Christmas festival fell on 13–14 December in 2025, with the boats on the Sunday, and whale watching opened on the 15th. Inland, the municipality polices the Transpeninsular highway for the 11–12 December pilgrimages to the Guadalupe church in Miraflores, which draw thousands every year. Late December is the holiday fortnight: SEP's school break runs from 21 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, and Visit Los Cabos notes that hotels and restaurants prepare their own New Year's Eve dinners and parties.

December, if you want the water. SMN's station averages put January 0.8°C cooler by day and 1.2°C cooler at night, a 26.6°C afternoon and a night that falls to 12.8°C / 55°F, with rain on about one day in both months. The sea cools by about 2°C, from roughly 25°C to 23°C. December's week belongs to the bay: last year's lit-boat parade and the first whale boats, with FICC Los Cabos running alongside. Our January guide goes inland, to La Candelaria's fiestas and the ranch festival Santiago held for the first time on 31 January 2026, where the cold sits in the sierra. Last winter's whale season covered both months.

The Flor de Pitahaya, the state's women's regional dress. Mexico's education ministry credits its makers by name: "El traje regional femenino fue creado por Susana Avilés y elaborado por Alejandrina Cota Carrillo", the dress was designed by Susana Avilés and made by Alejandrina Cota Carrillo, and José Torre Iglesias painted emblems of Baja California Sur onto it. SEP's guide to the state's traditional dress says the design won a contest held in the mid-20th century, before Baja California Sur became a state, and that its semicircular skirt is usually red. For a December evening on the Marina, borrow the principle rather than the dress: one strong colour in the skirt, white above it.
