What to Wear in Copenhagen in February
Copenhagen in February: 4°C / 39°F afternoons, −1°C / 30°F nights, and Fastelavn on Sunday 7 February 2027, with the Amager riders at the barrel at 4pm on the 7th and 8th.
- Black rubberised raincoat, thigh length, with a hood. Kastrup logs precipitation on about 11 February days, and you stand in the open while the barrel holds out
- Heather-grey chunky wool crew. The raincoat comes off at a konditori table over a fastelavnsbolle, and the knit is what shows
- Oat merino crew under the knit. Frost comes on about 18 February nights, and Sunday's barrel at Blushøj starts under an hour before a 4:56pm sunset
- Charcoal wool trousers over black lined rubber Chelsea boots. Fælledparken's barrel-beating happens on park ground, which stays wet in a month with about 11 wet days
- Cobalt rib beanie and black fleece-lined leather gloves. A slim glove holds a cup of rum punch at Blushøj, and cobalt helps a dressed-up child find you
- Cobalt nylon belt bag, worn crossbody. Visit Dragør invites you to follow the riders on foot, and both hands stay free
- Packing fancy dress for yourself. Lex gives the dressing-up to the children who beat the barrel, and the high hats belong to the Amager riders
- Arriving at 4pm sharp in Dragør. Visit Dragør says that some years the barrel falls in 20 minutes
- Dressing for the 4°C / 39°F afternoon on the way back from Amager. Sunset on Fastelavn Sunday is 4:56pm, and the night falls to −1°C / 30°F
- Planning a Tivoli evening. The gardens stay shut until the Easter season opens on 19 March 2027
Dress for a barrel, then a bun. NOAA's record for Kastrup gives February days of 3.8°C / 39°F and nights that fall to −1.2°C / 30°F, with frost on about 18 nights and precipitation on about 11 days. Fastelavn Sunday falls on 7 February 2027, and the Danish encyclopedia Lex calls the feast "én af årets store udklædningsfester", one of the year's big dress-up festivals. The dressing-up is the children's. Yours is the hour beside the barrel, in a park or on Amager, where riders knock it down on horseback at 4pm as the light goes. Then comes a fastelavnsbolle indoors with the coat off. Pack a black rubberised raincoat over grey wool, merino beneath, and lined rubber boots.
At Fastelavn the children dress up and everyone else stands by the barrel. Pack for an hour outdoors as the light goes at 4pm, then for a warm konditori and a bun.
The capsule
01Black rubberised raincoat, thigh length, hooded, snap frontKastrup logs precipitation on about 11 February days, and at Blushøj in Dragør you stand in the open while the riders take turns at the barrel, which Visit Dragør says can fall in 20 minutes or take almost an hour. A rubberised shell keeps rain off the wool underneath, the hood goes up over the beanie, and thigh length covers your hips.
02Heather-grey chunky wool crew, plain knitThis is the warmth under an unlined shell. At La Glace, or any konditori selling fastelavnsboller, the raincoat comes off and the knit is what people see across the table, so keep it a plain heather grey that sits between the black coat and the cobalt beanie. Chunky wool holds heat through an hour outdoors on a 4°C / 39°F afternoon.
03Oat merino long-sleeve crew, a thin base layerFrost comes on about 18 February nights at Kastrup, and Sunday's barrel at Blushøj starts at 4pm, under an hour before a 4:56pm sunset. A thin merino crew under the grey knit holds warmth while you stand still and stays comfortable once you move indoors to a warm café. Oat sits quietly under every other colour in the capsule, so it works all week.
04Charcoal wool straight-leg trousers, pressed creaseWith precipitation on about 11 February days, your legs meet the drizzle below the raincoat's hem, and wool keeps its warmth when it is damp. A straight leg falls over the Chelsea boots instead of bunching at the shaft, and a pressed crease suits a table at La Glace, founded in 1870 "midt i det gamle København", in the middle of old Copenhagen.
05Black lined rubber Chelsea boots, lug soleIn its 2026 grant, Østerbro's local committee wrote that 300 to 400 people usually come to Fælledparken for the barrel-beating, coffee and boller, and a park in a month with about 11 wet days is wet underfoot. Rubber does not soak through, a lining keeps your toes warm by the barrel, and a lug grips a path after one of about 18 frost nights.
06Cobalt ribbed wool beanie, close fit, shallow cuffOnce the rain stops, the hood comes down, and your ears meet the walk back from Amager after a 4:56pm sunset, on a night that falls to −1°C / 30°F. A close rib stays put when the hood goes back up. Cobalt matches the belt bag and gives a dressed-up child something bright to look for in the crowd around the barrel.
07Black fleece-lined leather glovesRum punch is on sale at Blushøj, where the Sunday procession ends, and a slim leather glove holds a warm cup where a mitten fumbles it. Fleece lining covers an hour beside the barrel on a day that peaks at 4°C / 39°F, and black leather wipes clean after a day of punch and boller.
08Cobalt nylon belt bag, worn crossbodyVisit Dragør writes, "You are welcome to follow riders and horses around all or part of the route," and following on foot needs both hands free, for a cup of punch or a child's hand. Wear the belt bag crossbody over the raincoat. Its two zips keep a card and phone shut in a crowd, and ripstop nylon shrugs off a wet day.
Day to night
Sunday 7 February, Fastelavn: oat merino crew · heather-grey knit · charcoal wool trousers · black lined Chelsea boots · black rubberised raincoat · cobalt beanie and belt bag. Barrel-beating for the children in Fælledparken, where, in its 2026 grant, the Østerbro committee said 300 to 400 people usually come for the barrel, coffee and boller (check the 2027 date nearer the time), then a fastelavnsbolle at a konditori table, coat off.
Out to Dragør, on southern Amager, well before 4pm: the Shrove Sunday procession ends at Blushøj, and some years the barrel falls in 20 minutes. Hood up if it rains, gloves on, rum punch in hand. Sunset is at 4:56pm, and the night falls toward −1°C / 30°F. On Monday the riders are back, on Hovedgaden in Store Magleby, also at 4pm.
A suggested look — black rubberised hooded raincoat, heather-grey chunky wool crew-neck sweater, charcoal wool straight-leg trousers, black rubber chelsea boots, cobalt ribbed wool beanie.

Frequently asked questions
Cold and damp, with the light coming back fast. NOAA NCEI's daily record for Copenhagen-Kastrup, a station the Danish Meteorological Institute operates, gives February an average high of 3.8°C and a low of −1.2°C, so afternoons reach 4°C / 39°F and nights fall to −1°C / 30°F. Frost comes on about 18 nights. Some precipitation falls on about 11 days, and on about 6 it reaches 1 mm or more. Sunset moves from 4:43pm on 1 February to 5:13pm on the 15th and 5:41pm on the 28th, and day length grows from 8h 40m to 10h 38m. On Fastelavn Sunday, 7 February 2027, the sun rises at 7:52am and sets at 4:56pm.
A black rubberised hooded raincoat, a heather-grey chunky wool crew, an oat merino base layer, charcoal wool straight-leg trousers, black lined rubber Chelsea boots, a cobalt ribbed beanie, black fleece-lined leather gloves and a cobalt nylon belt bag. That covers a 4°C / 39°F afternoon, a night that falls to −1°C / 30°F, an hour standing beside a barrel at Fastelavn, and a warm konditori afterwards. Layer the knit over the merino so the coat comes off indoors without leaving you in a thin top, and keep to black, grey, oat and cobalt so every piece goes with the others.
Warm, waterproof layers; the dressing-up is for the children. Københavns Stift puts it plainly: "For many, it’s a time for children to dress up, enjoy fun activities and delicious treats." The Danish encyclopedia Lex dates Lent from Ash Wednesday, the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter, and in Denmark the name covers the three days before it, so Fastelavn runs from Sunday 7 to Tuesday 9 February 2027. Children knock the cat out of the barrel, today a paper cat in a barrel of sweets. On Amager the barrel is knocked down on horseback: the Shrove Sunday procession ends at Blushøj in Dragør at 4pm, and on Monday the riders meet on Hovedgaden in Store Magleby, also at 4pm. Visit Dragør lists Monday's event as free, and its dress rules are for the riders, so wear what keeps you warm for an hour outdoors. Check the 2027 times before you go.
Early February, for Fastelavn and fashion week. Copenhagen Fashion Week's Autumn/Winter 2027 season runs from Monday 1 to Friday 5 February; it is a trade event, and its site lists no public tickets, so for a visitor it happens on the street outside the venues. Fastelavn follows on Sunday 7 and Monday 8, and Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, the 10th. Copenhagen Light Festival runs from 29 January to 21 February 2027, across both halves. Late February brings light: sunset moves from 4:43pm on the 1st to 5:41pm on the 28th. Neither half gets you into Tivoli, which stays shut until its Easter season opens on 19 March 2027.
About the same, and each month wins one measure. On NOAA's Kastrup record, January's average high is 3.6°C against February's 3.8°C, and February's average low is −1.2°C against January's −1.1°C, so both months print 4°C / 39°F by day and −1°C / 30°F at night. January has slightly more frost nights, 18.4 against 17.9, and more wet days, with precipitation on about 14 days against about 11. February is brighter, with 9h 39m of daylight on the 15th against 7h 40m in mid-January. In February, plan around Fastelavn and an hour standing beside the barrel.
Children wear the dressing-up clothes, and on Amager the riders wear a dress fixed in the 19th century. Visit Dragør traces the custom to Dutch settlers on Amager in the 16th century and to a sketch of a barrel ride in Jacobæus' travel records from 1671, and writes that "During the 19th century the Shrovetide Riding Parade took its present form with fixed rules for dressing". The riders wear "high hats, white shirts and embroidered black vests", and the horses' harnesses carry small white seashells. In the city, the day ends at a konditori. Conditori La Glace, opened by Nicolaus Henningsen at Skoubogade 3 on 8 October 1870 and in its own words Denmark's oldest, makes a special set of fastelavnsboller every year, on sale from about four weeks before Fastelavn. Its Fastelavn page notes that the feast outlived the fast after the Reformation of 1536.
