TL;DR

Berlin in February: 5°C / 41°F afternoons, −1°C / 30°F nights, about 15 frost days, and the 77th Berlinale from Wednesday 10 to Sunday 21 February 2027.

Do
  • Black wool overcoat below the knee — the Palast's red carpet runs across the open pavement of Marlene-Dietrich-Platz
  • Ivory merino crew over a pale grey cotton shirt — warm on the U-Bahn between cinemas, and the knit comes off in the auditorium
  • Black wide-leg wool trousers, full length — Deutscher Wetterdienst counts about 4 February days that never rise above zero
  • Black leather Chelsea boots on a lug sole — about 15 frost days, and rain or snow on about 11
  • Small black leather top-handle bag — in 2026 tickets went on sale online and were paid by card or phone, so carry little
  • Silver-grey cashmere scarf and camel leather gloves — for standing still by the carpet on a night that falls toward −1°C / 30°F
Don't
  • Planning to queue at Potsdamer Platz — the presale there, and the legendary Berlinale queues, no longer exist
  • Thin leather soles — Deutscher Wetterdienst counts about 15 frost days in a Tempelhof February
  • Dressing for the 5°C / 41°F afternoon — the sun sets at 5:18pm by mid-month and the night falls toward −1°C / 30°F
  • Booking the Kinemathek to see Dietrich's wardrobe — its exhibitions are paused until 18 March 2027

Pack for two places: a cinema seat and a frosted pavement. NOAA's figures for Deutscher Wetterdienst's Tempelhof station give Berlin's February 5.1°C by day and −0.8°C at night, with rain or snow on about 11 days, and DWD counts about 15 frost days and 2.6 hours of sun a day. The 77th Berlinale runs through it, from 10 to 21 February 2027. Its own profile calls it "one of the largest public film festivals in the world", and its screenings reach from the Berlinale Palast on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz to "the arthouse cinemas of the city’s neighbourhoods". So pack layers you can sit in for a feature, under one long coat for the walk between.

The Berlinale is twelve days of sitting in the dark and walking between cinemas in the cold. Dress for the seat, then add one long coat for the night you stand by the red carpet.

The capsule

  1. Black single-breasted wool overcoat, below the knee
    01
Black wool overcoat, below the knee, single-breasted

If you go to see the arrivals at the Berlinale Palast, you stand on the open pavement of Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, where visitBerlin describes the "red carpet rolled out" each February. By mid-month the sun sets at 5:18pm, and the night falls toward −1°C / 30°F. Black wool below the knee covers you to the boot, and a single-breasted front opens easily in your seat.

  2. Ivory fine-gauge merino crew-neck sweater
    02
    Ivory fine-gauge merino crew

Berlinale screenings spread across town. In 2026 the festival showed 278 films from 80 countries, and its Berlinale Goes Kiez programme takes a selection out to neighbourhood arthouse cinemas, so expect U-Bahn rides and frosted pavements between warm auditoriums. Fine merino holds heat under the coat outside and stays thin enough to sit in through a feature. Ivory lifts all that black.

  3. Pale grey oversized cotton shirt with a point collar, chest pocket and rolled cuffs
    03

The Berlinale publishes no dress code for its public screenings, so dress for the seat. A loose pale grey cotton shirt is the layer you watch in once the merino comes off inside, and its point collar sits out over the crew neck when the knit goes back on. Roll the sleeves for a day of films; light grey bridges ivory and black.

  4. Black high-waisted pleated wide-leg wool trousers
    04
Black high-waisted wide-leg wool trousers, pleated

Deutscher Wetterdienst counts about 4 days in a Berlin February that never rise above zero, and on those days the walk from the U-Bahn bites at the ankle. Full-length wool breaks over the boot so no skin shows, a wide leg leaves room for thermal tights, and front pleats keep their line after a long sit. In black, they pass on a premiere night.

  5. Black smooth leather Chelsea boots with a ridged lug sole
    05
Black leather Chelsea boots, lug sole

Frost settles on about 15 days in a Tempelhof February, Deutscher Wetterdienst counts, and NOAA's record has rain or snow on about 11, so the pavement between cinemas is often frosted or wet. A ridged rubber lug grips both. Elastic sides mean no laces to retie with gloves on, and smooth black leather, polished, looks right on the night you stand near the Palast's carpet.

  6. Small black leather structured top-handle bag with a zip top and a front flap pocket
    06
Small black leather top-handle bag, zip top

In 2026 Berlinale tickets went on sale online at 10am three days before each screening, paid by card, PayPal, Wero, Apple Pay or Google Pay, so a phone and a card carry the day. A small structured bag holds both on your lap through a film. At the Kinemathek's own events in the E-Werk, tickets are online or in the foyer, with no cash.

  7. Long silver-grey cashmere scarf with a short fringe
    07

After the Opening Gala, the Berlinale Palast hosts "three daily Premieres" of the Competition, so the carpet on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz sees arrivals three times a day. Standing to watch is colder than walking, on a night that falls toward −1°C / 30°F. A long cashmere scarf wraps twice under the coat collar and folds into a pocket in the cinema. Silver grey matches the shirt.

  8. Camel leather gloves with a cashmere lining at the cuff
    08
    Camel leather gloves, cashmere-lined

Marlene-Dietrich-Platz carries the name of an actress whose estate at the Deutsche Kinemathek holds 90 pairs of gloves, from makers including Hermès. You need one pair. Camel leather lined with cashmere keeps your hands warm on a frosted handrail and the walk back from the U-Bahn, and it is the one warm colour against the black coat, the grey scarf and the ivory knit.

Day to night

Morning

Pale grey shirt under the ivory merino crew · black wide-leg trousers · black Chelsea boots · black wool coat · small black bag. A screening at one of the neighbourhood cinemas Berlinale Goes Kiez uses, then the U-Bahn to the next; the crew comes off in the auditorium, and the shirt carries you through the film.

Evening

Crew back on, shirt collar out · coat buttoned · silver-grey scarf wound twice · camel gloves on. A premiere night at the Berlinale Palast on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz after a 5:18pm sunset by mid-month, and a night that falls toward −1°C / 30°F.

A suggested look — black long wool overcoat, ivory merino crew, black wide-leg wool trousers, black leather chelsea boots, silver-grey cashmere scarf.

What to avoid

  • Queuing at Potsdamer Platz for tickets — visitBerlin says that presale, and its queues, no longer exist
  • Leaving tickets to the day — in 2026 they went on sale online at 10am, three days before each screening
  • Thin leather soles — about 15 frost days and 4 days below zero all day on DWD's count
  • A visit to see Marlene Dietrich's wardrobe — the Kinemathek's exhibitions reopen on 18 March 2027
  • Cash at a Kinemathek event — the Kinemathek sells its tickets online or in its E-Werk foyer, with no cash payment

Frequently asked questions

Cold and grey, with frost on about half the nights. NOAA NCEI's figures for Berlin-Tempelhof, a station Deutscher Wetterdienst operates, give February an average high of 5.1°C / 41°F and an average low of −0.8°C, with 36.0mm of precipitation across about 11 days, about 5 of them with 2.5mm or more. DWD's own station normals for Tempelhof count about 15 frost days, about 4 days that never rise above zero and 74 hours of sun across the month, about 2.6 a day. Daylight grows from 9h 03m on 1 February (7:48am to 4:52pm) to 10h 47m on the 28th (6:55am to 5:43pm), and on the 15th the sun sets at 5:18pm.

A black single-breasted wool overcoat below the knee, an ivory fine-gauge merino crew, a pale grey cotton shirt, black wide-leg wool trousers, black leather Chelsea boots on a lug sole, a small black leather top-handle bag, a long silver-grey cashmere scarf and camel leather gloves. That covers a 5°C / 41°F afternoon on the U-Bahn between cinemas, a film in a full auditorium and a night near the Berlinale Palast's carpet that falls toward −1°C / 30°F. Leave thin leather soles at home, and add thermal tights for the days that stay below zero.

Warm layers you can sit in, under a long coat for the walk. The Berlinale publishes no dress code for its public screenings. Its Opening Gala at the Berlinale Palast welcomes "1600 national and international A-list guests", and after it the Palast hosts the Competition's premieres; the awards, Crystal Bears included, follow there on Friday 19 February. The Berlin Bear trophy was created by the sculptor Renée Sintenis, and Monika Grütters, then Germany's Minister of State for Culture, said at the 2019 opening that "der Berliner Bär in Gold und Silber ist Deutschlands berühmtester Film-Botschafter": the Berlin Bear in gold and silver is Germany's most famous film ambassador. In 2026 tickets cost €15 to €20 depending on the venue. The 2027 programme follows the press conference on 20 January.

Late, if the Berlinale is why you are going. The first week has other dates: Berlin Fashion Week's autumn-winter shows end on Monday 1 February, and the Fruit Logistica trade fair runs in Berlin from 3 to 5 February. The 77th Berlinale opens on Wednesday 10 February, "one day earlier than in previous years", and the European Film Market runs alongside it to the 16th; in 2026 about 19,500 industry professionals attended. David Bowie "Stage" has its world premiere with the festival at the Uber Arena on Sunday 14 February. The awards are on Friday 19 February, and the 20th and 21st are the festival's first Audience Days. Announcing the new dates, Tricia Tuttle, the Berlinale's director, said: "Berlinale’s not-so-secret weapon is our wonderful audience". Sunset moves from 4:52pm on the 1st to 5:43pm on the 28th.

January, on every measure. NOAA's Tempelhof figures give January 3.6°C by day and −1.4°C at night, against February's 5.1°C / 41°F and −0.8°C, and January's 47.7mm of precipitation falls across about 14 days against February's 36.0mm across about 11. Deutscher Wetterdienst counts 16.8 frost days and 7.1 days below zero all day in January, against 15.1 and 4.0 in February, and 51.1 hours of sun against 74.0. On the 15th, daylight grows from 8h 11m in January to 9h 55m in February. January's dated Berlin events are the Grüne Woche, from 15 to 24 January, and Berlin Fashion Week, from 29 January to 1 February. February's is the Berlinale, which moves you between cinemas across the city.

Long dark coats, wool and boots that grip a frosted pavement, and in Berlinale weeks the city's dress history runs through film. The festival was "created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”." Its Palast stands on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, named for the actress born on 27 December 1901, a Berliner schooled in Wilmersdorf, whose Der blaue Engel premiered at the Gloria Palast on 1 April 1930. The Deutsche Kinemathek acquired her estate in 1993: 3,300 textile objects, among them 90 pairs of gloves, some by Hermès, and 400 hats, some by Yves Saint Laurent. The Kinemathek's first Berlinale Retrospective, in 1977, was hers: "The first edition centered on the icon Marlene Dietrich." The 2027 Retrospective marks 100 years of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, and the Kinemathek's artistic director, Heleen Gerritsen, says: "One hundred years after Metropolis, the focus is on directors who created their own worlds and visions of the future."
