What to Wear in Honolulu in October

Pack for June with a shell. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Honolulu airport give October 30.5°C by day, the same afternoon as June, and 23.3°C at night. What changes is the rain: 38mm over about 8 days, the first month since March to average more than an inch. The National Weather Service in Honolulu counts October as the first month of winter, the season of more frequent clouds and rain, and notes that rain rarely lasts more than a few hours. The ocean runs a month behind the sky. Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety opens its winter surf season on north- and west-facing beaches in November, so swim both coasts now and keep a shell in the bag for the showers.

   White V-neck kaftan midi, kimono sleeves

   At 30.5°C one loose layer over the bikini is all you want between the water and a plate lunch in Kapahulu. Elbow-length kimono sleeves shade your shoulders without closing round your arms, the elastic waist stops it billowing in the trade wind, and a midi hem covers enough to walk into a shop straight from the sand. After dark it doubles as the dinner dress, since the normal low is 23.3°C.

   Plumeria-print aloha shirt, white ground

   Michel's at the Colony Surf lists aloha wear among the attire it encourages, which tells you how Honolulu reads the shirt: dressed. A white ground with pale yellow plumeria keeps the print light at 23.3°C after dark. Worn open over the bikini by day and buttoned over the khaki shorts at night, it is the only print in the capsule.

   Khaki cotton-twill Bermuda shorts

   For the town half of the day: the drive to the North Shore, the Honolulu Museum of Art, a shave-ice queue in Haleʻiwa. A Bermuda length that stops just above the knee looks finished next to the aloha shirt, cotton twill does not cling at 30.5°C, and khaki forgives the red dirt on a valley trailhead.

   Lemon-yellow packable hooded shell

   October averages 2.6 days with a tenth of an inch of rain or more at the airport, up from 2.2 in September, and the showers come and go. A hood and a zip handle a passing downpour on the North Shore; then the shell packs into its own sack and rides in the dry bag until the next one. Lemon yellow ties it to the bikini.

   Tan leather sandals, buckled ankle strap

   One pair for the sand, the wet path down to the water and dinner. A buckled ankle strap keeps the sandal on through soft sand where a slide walks off your foot, the lugged rubber sole grips wet rock at the water's edge, and tan leather looks intentional under the white kaftan at night.

   Olive canvas wide-brim sun hat

   Hawaiʻi's state parks ask Diamond Head hikers to wear a hat and sunscreen along with good walking shoes, and an October sunrise at about 6:25am makes an early climb easy. A flat brim that goes all the way round shades your face and neck on the trail and on the sand afterwards, canvas folds into the dry bag without cracking the way straw does, and the olive matches the bag.

   Olive roll-top dry bag

   A beach day and a passing shower in the same afternoon need a bag that keeps both out. Roll the top three times, clip the buckle, and your phone, car key and folded shell stay dry through a downpour or a wave at the water's edge. Sand shakes off coated nylon, and the single strap goes across the body, so both hands are free on a rocky path.
