What to Wear in Honolulu in January

Pack for dinner. NOAA's normals for Honolulu airport give January 80.5°F by day and 19.3°C at night, the coolest normal low of the year, with 47mm of rain over about 8 days and 3.3 days of a tenth of an inch or more, the highest count of any month. The afternoons stay summer. The evenings do not, and Waikīkī's dining rooms set the rest. The Halekulani's La Mer asks women for "Elegant evening attire" and prohibits "T-shirts, shorts, ripped denim, baseball caps"; Michel's at the Colony Surf encourages aloha wear and "Dark, tailored jeans" and discourages flip-flops. By day there is Diamond Head, where Hawaiʻi's state parks division asks you to "Wear good walking shoes, bring water, and wear a hat and sunscreen." One slip dress, one blazer, dark denim and a packable shell cover the month.

   Oyster champagne satin bias-cut slip dress

   La Mer, open Tuesday to Saturday from 5:30pm, asks women for "Elegant evening attire". A bias-cut satin slip meets that in one piece, and at 81°F in the late afternoon it is the one evening dress you can wear on the walk to dinner without overheating. Oyster champagne reads formal without black, and it catches the last light over the water at about six.

   Beige cropped single-button blazer

   January's normal low is 19.3°C, the coolest night of the year, and a lanai table at the Halekulani is open to the sea breeze. A cropped blazer goes over the slip without hiding the line of the dress, and over the floral top and jeans at Michel's. One button and a short body mean it rides in a carry-on without a crease across the back.

   Black cropped blossom-print top, stand collar

   Michel's does not allow tank tops, so the second evening needs sleeves. A short-sleeved cropped top in black with pink and mint blossoms sits at the waist of high-rise jeans, keeps the stand collar neat under the blazer, and carries the only print in a capsule of cream, beige and dark denim.

   Near-black indigo straight jeans

   Michel's at the Colony Surf lists "Dark, tailored jeans" among its encouraged attire, next to aloha wear and chinos. Near-black indigo reads as the tailored kind, a straight leg sits cleanly over a pointed pump, and at 19.3°C after dark a full-length leg is welcome by the time dessert arrives.

   Cream patent pointed-toe pumps

   Both of this month's dining rooms rule out beach footwear: Michel's discourages "Slippers / Flip Flops / Thongs sandals", and La Mer asks men for closed-toe shoes. A cream patent pump works with the champagne slip and with the dark jeans, and a pointed toe lengthens the line of a straight leg.

   Cream quick-dry walking shoes, toggle laces

   Diamond Head's summit trail climbs 560 feet in 0.8 miles, and DLNR warns that "the last 1/10 of a mile is all stairs and especially steep". A walking shoe with a grippy sole handles the stairs, toggle laces cinch without a double knot, and quick-dry mesh copes with a windward shower on the way back.

   Slate blue packable hooded shell

   January averages 3.3 days with a tenth of an inch of rain or more, the most of any month on NOAA's airport normals. A packable shell with a hood rides in the crossbody from the morning hike to the evening walk, and slate blue sits under the champagne and the black without clashing.

   Dark green structured leather crossbody, gold clasp

   Both hands on the handrails on Diamond Head's last stairs, and at a golf course you want both free for a scorecard and a drink. A structured crossbody holds a phone, a card and your reservation, and dark green leather goes to dinner at La Mer later without looking like a hiking bag.
