TL;DR

Madrid in December: 10°C / 50°F days, 4°C / 39°F nights, and evenings spent outside under the lights.

Do
  • Black wool coat to below the knee. The 2025–26 lights stayed on until midnight Sunday to Thursday, and you stay out with them
  • Cherry-red cardigan over an ivory merino crew. Buttoned under the coat on the street, opened at the dinner table
  • Black straight jeans, full length. A night that falls to 4°C / 39°F finds a bare ankle first
  • Black ankle boots with a treaded sole. Falls, sprains and dizzy spells made up most of SAMUR's cases in the 2025 Christmas crowds
  • Charcoal scarf and lined black gloves. Sunset is 5:51pm at the solstice, and the evening runs on for hours after it
  • Slim black crossbody, zipped and worn in front. The city's 2025 New Year plan for Sol named pickpocketing as a target
Don't
  • An open tote at Sol. Police briefly closed Preciados and Carmen to walkers over the 2025 puente, and a crowd that tight hides a hand in your bag
  • A smooth leather sole. About 8 days are wet, and the evening is hours on foot between Sol and the Gran Vía
  • A hip-length jacket for the market. Frost comes on about 4 nights, and standing at the stalls chills the legs first
  • The 2025–26 light hours as the 2026–27 timetable. The new hours come with the city's programme at the end of November

Dress for the end of the evening. NOAA NCEI's record for Retiro puts December at 10.3°C by day and 3.7°C / 39°F at night, with rain on about 8 days and frost on about 4 nights, and you spend those nights outside. The Plaza Mayor market runs from late November to 31 December 2026, open until 9pm Sunday to Thursday and 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves. The 2025–26 lights burned from 6pm to midnight on those nights. Turismo Madrid notes that Spanish people "don't usually have lunch after 3:30pm, or dinner after 11pm", so a late table ends with a walk home near midnight. Pack a long coat, a knit you can open indoors, and boots that grip.

Madrid's December happens after sunset: the market, the lights, the walk home past Sol. Dress for the end of the evening, not the start.

The capsule

  1. black single-breasted wool coat, below the knee
    01
Black wool coat, notch lapel, below the knee

In Madrid a night that falls to 4°C / 39°F is spent outdoors: the 2025–26 lights stayed on until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 6am on 31 December. A single-breasted wool coat below the knee covers you from the market to the walk home. Black hides the damp of about 8 wet days and leaves the red cardigan as the one colour.

  2. cropped cherry-red ribbed cardigan
    02
    Cherry-red cropped cardigan

Button it under the coat for the street and open it once you sit down to dinner around Sol. Cherry red is the one strong colour in this capsule, and it still reads under a black coat on a lit street at night. A cropped hem clears the crossbody strap, and three buttons undo quickly in a doorway between the cold and a heated bar.

  3. black straight-leg jeans, full length
    03
    Black straight-leg jeans

Full length and straight, so the hem meets the boot with no skin showing. The 2026 Plaza Mayor market has 104 stalls, and you walk them slowly, stopping at each one in the cold. A cropped trouser leaves the ankle out on a night heading for 4°C / 39°F.

  4. ivory fine merino crew
    04
    Ivory fine-merino crew

This is the layer that lets one outfit cover a 10°C / 50°F afternoon and a night that falls to 4°C / 39°F. Fine merino lies flat under the cardigan with no ridge at the neck, and a crew leaves room for the scarf. Ivory breaks up a black coat and black jeans, so the outfit does not read as one dark block under the street lights.

  5. black tread side-zip ankle boots
    05
Black leather ankle boots, side zip, treaded sole

The Ayuntamiento said SAMUR's medics saw mostly minor cases during the 2025 Christmas operation, "la mayoría debidas a caídas, torceduras, mareos": falls, sprains and dizzy spells. Add about 8 wet days and hours on foot between Sol and the Gran Vía, and a rubber tread earns its place. A low block heel and a side zip mean the boots come off fast at the hotel.

  6. light charcoal melange scarf
    06
    Charcoal wool scarf

Sunset on 21 December is 5:51pm, and in 2025–26 the lights came on at 6pm. Everything you came to see happens after that, while the night heads for 4°C / 39°F. A narrow charcoal wool scarf closes the gap between the crew neck and the coat collar and stays quiet next to the red cardigan, which keeps its place as the accent.

  7. black smooth lined leather gloves
    07
    Black leather gloves, lined

Frost comes on about 4 December nights at Retiro, and AEMET's averages give the Barajas airport station nearly three times as many frost days, which matters if you sleep near the airport or IFEMA. Hands are out for a phone and for paying at the market stalls. A short lined glove in smooth black leather keeps the fingers usable and disappears against the coat.

  8. slim black leather crescent crossbody

Zip it before you stop to look up. Over the 2025 Constitución weekend police briefly closed Preciados and Carmen, the streets into Sol, to foot traffic, and the Ayuntamiento's New Year plan for Sol listed "evitar los hurtos", preventing pickpocketing, among its aims. A slim crescent bag on one strap, worn across the body and in front, stays shut in that crowd.

Day to night

Morning

Ivory crew, red cardigan, black jeans, treaded boots, coat over the arm for a 10°C / 50°F afternoon. The 2026 Plaza Mayor market opens at 10am; walk its 104 stalls by daylight.

Evening

Coat buttoned, scarf and gloves on, bag zipped and in front. In 2025–26 the lights ran from 6pm to midnight Sunday to Thursday and to 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and 7 December; on 31 December they stayed on until 6am.

A suggested look — black wool coat, cherry-red cardigan, ivory merino crew, charcoal wool scarf, black straight jeans.

What to avoid

  • An open tote at Sol. The city's Christmas plan targets pickpocketing
  • A smooth leather sole. About 8 wet days and hours on foot
  • A hip-length jacket for an evening spent standing at the market
  • The 2025–26 light hours, used as the 2026–27 timetable
  • Arriving at Sol after it fills on the 31st. The 2025 cap was 15,000

Frequently asked questions

Dry, often sunny, and cold once the sun goes. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Madrid Retiro, the AEMET station in the city centre at 667 m, gives a December high of 10.3°C and a low of 3.7°C / 39°F, about 42 mm of rain on roughly 8 days, and frost on about 4 nights. AEMET's own averages count about 124 hours of December sunshine there. That low comes before dawn; the cold you notice is the walk home after dinner. Sunrise is 8:18am and sunset 5:49pm on 1 December, and 8:34am and 5:51pm at the solstice. The Barajas airport station runs colder at night than the centre.

A black wool coat below the knee, a cherry-red cardigan, an ivory merino crew, black straight jeans, black treaded ankle boots, a charcoal wool scarf, lined black leather gloves and a slim black crossbody. That covers a 10°C / 50°F afternoon at the market and a night that falls to 4°C / 39°F. Leave the open tote and the smooth-soled shoes at home: Sol and the Gran Vía are crowded, and about 8 days are wet.

The Plaza Mayor market is confirmed. Turismo Madrid lists it from late November to 31 December 2026, with 104 stalls, open 10am to 9pm Sunday to Thursday and to 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves. The 2026–27 lights promise "más de 14 millones de bombillas", more than 14 million LED bulbs across more than 250 sites, and their hours come with the city's programme at the end of November. As a guide, in 2025–26 the switch-on ceremony on 22 November began at 7pm, and the lights then ran from 6pm to midnight Sunday to Thursday, to 1am on Fridays, Saturdays and 7 December, to 3am on the 24th and to 6am on the 31st.

Early December for the puente, late December for Nochevieja. The BOE lists Monday 7 December 2026, moved from Constitution Day because the 6th is a Sunday, and Tuesday 8 December, the Inmaculada, as holidays in the Community of Madrid. That long weekend fills the centre: in 2025 police briefly closed Preciados and Carmen to walkers. Late December ends at Sol, where Turismo Madrid's 2026–27 agenda again lists the Preúvas rehearsal on the 30th. In 2025 the Ayuntamiento emptied the square at 9pm on both nights, reopened it at 10pm through four filtered entrances on Mayor, Arenal, Alcalá and Carrera de San Jerónimo, capped it at 15,000 and banned dangerous objects.

Similar days, slightly milder nights, and a different reason to be out. NOAA's Retiro record gives December 10.3°C by day and 3.7°C / 39°F at night with about 4 frost nights, and January 10.0°C / 50°F and 3.0°C / 37°F with about 5. December is spent walking under the lights and through the market, so this capsule is a black coat with a red cardigan. January turns on one evening, the Cabalgata de Reyes on the 5th, and its guide swaps in a camel coat, a cream turtleneck, a beanie and a tan bag for a long stand on the kerb.

Dark wool coats, a scarf, and for some a cape. Capas Seseña's own history says "Santos Seseña founds Casa Seseña in 1901", first on Calle de Espoz y Mina, and the house opened a second shop at Calle de la Cruz 23 in 1927, a short walk from Sol. In 1924 Alfonso XIII ordered capes for himself and two princes, and in 1955 the bullfighter Luis Miguel Dominguín gave Picasso an embroidered Seseña cape. You do not need a cape to dress like the city in December. A long dark coat that stays buttoned until midnight does the same job.
