What to Wear in Madrid in January
Madrid in January: 10°C / 50°F days, 3°C / 37°F nights, and the evening of the 5th on a kerb for the Cabalgata.
- Camel wool coat to the knee. The Cabalgata runs after sunset, and you stand still for most of it
- Cream merino turtleneck. A covered neck under the coat, thin enough for a fitting room on Preciados
- Mid-blue straight jeans, full length. The ankle stays covered through a three-hour parade
- Tan ankle boots with a treaded sole. About 5 frost nights at Retiro, the most of any month
- Tan lined gloves and a cream beanie. Standing makes less heat than walking, on a night that falls to 3°C / 37°F
- Tan leather shoulder bag, zipped and worn in front. In 2026 the crowd lined the Castellana and Recoletos
- A thin-soled trainer on the kerb. Three hours on cold pavement in a frost-prone month pulls the heat out through your feet
- The 2026 route taken as 2027's. The city publishes the new programme at the end of November
- An open tote in the parade crowd. For three hours it hangs at your hip, out of your sight
- Waiting for one official sales start. Spanish law leaves the dates to each shop
Dress to stand still. NOAA NCEI's record for Retiro gives January 10.0°C / 50°F by day and 3.0°C / 37°F at night, with rain on about 7 days and frost on about 5 nights, the most of any month. The 5th sets the list. Turismo Madrid says the Three Kings visit every house in Madrid between the 5th and the 6th, but "la tarde anterior, recorren las calles en una cabalgata espectacular": on the evening before, they parade through the streets. In 2026 that meant 6pm on the Castellana. Sunset on the 5th falls just before 6pm, and the night then heads for 3°C / 37°F. Pack a long coat, a high neck, gloves, a hat and boots with grip.
January in Madrid has one evening that sets the packing list: the 5th, three hours on a kerb after sunset, waiting for the Three Kings.
The capsule
01Camel wool coat, to the kneeWorn open, a knee-length wool coat is enough for a 10°C / 50°F afternoon on Preciados; buttoned to the collar, it carries you through the parade. In 2026 the Cabalgata left at 6pm, minutes after sunset, and you stand through it while the night heads for 3°C / 37°F. Camel ties the tan boots, gloves and bag together, so one coat anchors the whole capsule.
02Cream fine-merino turtleneckA high neck keeps you covered when the coat is open inside a shop on Preciados, the street where El Corte Inglés took its name from an 1890 tailor's. Fine merino is thin enough for a fitting room and warm enough under the coat on the kerb that evening. Cream is the light colour against camel, tan and mid-blue, and it sits close under a scarf.
03Mid-blue straight-leg jeansTurismo Madrid's 2026–27 agenda gives the parade three hours, 6pm to 9pm, and a full-length straight leg keeps the ankle covered for all of it. In 2026 the route ran from Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz along the Castellana and Recoletos to Cibeles, a long line of open pavement. Mid-blue denim sits under a camel coat without the hard edge of black.
04Tan leather ankle boots, treaded soleFrost comes on about 5 January nights at Retiro, more than in any other month, and you spend the 5th standing on cold pavement. A treaded rubber sole keeps its grip on a frosty morning. Snow is rare, about one day in an average January by AEMET's count, but Filomena left about 40 cm in the city in 2021. Tan carries the coat down to the ground.
05Camel wool scarfWind it once over the turtleneck and it closes the collar of an open coat; pull it off inside and it folds into the bag. You need it more out by the airport: AEMET's averages give the Barajas station more than twice Retiro's January frost days, which matters if you stay near IFEMA. Camel matches the coat, so the cream knit stays the light note.
06Tan leather shoulder bagZip it, shorten the strap and wear it in front once you take your place. In 2026 the Cabalgata crowd lined the Castellana and Recoletos for the length of the route, and you stand in it for up to three hours with the bag at your hip. A soft tan leather bag matches the coat and holds a phone, a card and the gloves once you go indoors.
07Tan leather gloves, linedYou make less heat standing than walking, and the parade is three hours of standing. Lined tan leather gloves leave the fingers free for a phone camera when the floats arrive, and they match the bag and boots. Keep them in a pocket on a 10°C / 50°F afternoon and put them on at sunset, just before the parade leaves.
08Cream merino beanieEars go first on a long wait in the dark. A close-fitting cream merino cap keeps them covered for a parade that Turismo Madrid's 2026–27 agenda runs from 6pm to 9pm, then folds flat into a pocket when you go inside for dinner. No pompon and no logo, so it reads with the turtleneck rather than sitting on top of the outfit.
Day to night
Cream turtleneck, mid-blue jeans, tan boots, camel coat open, tan bag. A 10°C / 50°F walk on Preciados, where each shop sets its own sale dates.
Coat buttoned, scarf wound, gloves and beanie on. In 2026 the Cabalgata left Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz at 6pm, just after sunset; take your place early and stand while the night heads for 3°C / 37°F.
A suggested look — camel wool coat, cream merino turtleneck, camel wool scarf, mid-blue straight jeans, tan leather ankle boots.
What to avoid
- A thin-soled trainer on a frost-prone evening
- The 2026 parade route, used as if 2027's were published
- An open tote along the Castellana
- Waiting for one national sales date. Each shop sets its own
- A short jacket near Barajas, which runs colder at night than the centre
Frequently asked questions
The coldest nights of the year, with days that still reach 10°C / 50°F. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Madrid Retiro, the AEMET station in the city centre, gives a January high of 10.0°C / 50°F and a low of 3.0°C / 37°F, about 32 mm of rain on roughly 7 days, and frost on about 5 nights. That low comes near dawn, not at the parade. Sunrise on 1 January is 8:38 and sunset 17:58; by the 31st sunset is 18:31. The Barajas airport station runs colder at night than the centre.
A camel wool coat, a cream merino turtleneck, mid-blue straight jeans, tan treaded ankle boots, a camel scarf, tan lined gloves, a cream beanie and a tan shoulder bag. That covers a 10°C / 50°F afternoon in the shops and three hours on a kerb as the night heads for 3°C / 37°F. Leave the thin trainers and the open tote at home.
On the evening of Tuesday 5 January. Turismo Madrid's 2026–27 agenda lists it from 6pm to 9pm, and the city publishes the full programme, with the route, at the end of November. In 2026 the parade left at 6pm on Monday 5 January from Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz to Plaza de Cibeles, along the Castellana and Recoletos. The next day, Wednesday 6 January 2027, is a national holiday on the BOE's 2027 list. Sunset on the 5th falls just before 6pm, so button the coat, wear gloves and a hat, choose a treaded sole and plan to stand.
Early January for the parade and the holiday, late January for longer days. The 5th is the Cabalgata, the 6th a national holiday, and the winter sales run on dates each shop sets for itself, since Spanish law leaves them to the retailer. By the 31st sunset has moved to 6:31pm. The frost belongs to the whole month, though. In January 2021, the month of Filomena, AEMET recorded "18 días consecutivos de helada" at Retiro, 18 frost days in a row from the 2nd to the 19th, with a low of −7.4°C on the 12th, and had to go back to 1957 for a January to match. Pack grip whichever week you come.
A little colder at night, and built around one evening instead of a month of them. NOAA's Retiro record gives January 10.0°C / 50°F by day and 3.0°C / 37°F at night with about 5 frost nights, against December's 10.3°C and 3.7°C / 39°F with about 4. December is spent walking under the lights and through the Plaza Mayor market, so its guide uses a black coat and a red cardigan. January asks you to stand still for the Cabalgata, so this capsule adds a beanie and a high neck, and runs camel and tan from the coat to the boots.
Good leather and a coat bought to last, often from the city's own houses. LOEWE's history opens: "Founded in Madrid in 1846, LOEWE is the second-oldest luxury fashion house in the world". It began as a small leather workshop on Calle Lobo, which Enrique Loewe Roessberg bought and gave his name in 1872. El Corte Inglés "took its name from a small tailor's shop founded in 1890" between Preciados, Carmen and Rompelanzas. On the evening of the 5th the kerb along the Castellana shows the result: long wool coats buttoned to the collar, scarves, gloves and leather boots.
