What to Wear in Nashville in December
Nashville in December: 11°C / 52°F days, 1°C / 34°F nights, and three temperatures between the Opry House, ice! and the sidewalk.
- Tan waxed western jacket — rain falls on about 11 days, and the Opry House has no coat check, so it rides on your lap
- Black merino crew — the layer you sit in at a 21°C / 70°F show, and the one under Gaylord's loaner parka
- Dark straight jeans — Gaylord's packing list for the 9°F rooms names long pants
- Tan closed-toe ankle boots with a tread — the ice! slides require closed toes, and Broadway is wet on about 11 days
- Cream beanie and tan gloves — Gaylord strongly recommends both inside ice!, and sells them if you forget
- Black thermal under the crew — Big Bash gates open at 5:30pm and the Music Note drops at midnight
- Arriving more than five minutes after your ice! slot — Gaylord says entry then cannot be guaranteed
- Open-toe evening shoes at Gaylord — closed toes are required on the ice slides
- Suede as your only jacket — the airport records 4.43 inches of December rain
- An oversized bag at the Opry House — it is not allowed, and every bag is subject to search
Dress for the doors, not for one room. NOAA NCEI's normals for Nashville International put December at 11.2°C / 52°F by day, with nights falling to 0.7°C near dawn and 4.43 inches of rain on about 11 days. One evening crosses three temperatures. The Opry House "generally stays around 70 degrees", its FAQ says, and has no coat check, so your jacket spends the show on your lap. Gaylord keeps ice! at 9°F and lends every guest a calf-length parka. Outside, NOAA's 8pm hourly normal is about 6°C / 43°F. Pack thin layers you can sit in and a jacket that takes rain.
A December evening in Nashville crosses three temperatures: a warm Opry House seat, 9°F inside ice!, and a wet sidewalk in between. Bring a jacket you can hold on your lap and a layer you can sit in.
The capsule
01Tan waxed-cotton western jacket, snap frontNOAA's airport normals give December 4.43 inches of rain on about 11 days. Waxed cotton sheds a Broadway shower that would soak a suede jacket, and a pointed western yoke keeps it in the city's register. Hip length matters as well. The Opry House has no coat check, so this jacket spends every show folded on your lap.
02Black fine merino crewThis is what you wear once the jacket comes off. The Opry House keeps its auditorium around 21°C / 70°F, warm enough that one thin layer is right and two are too many for a full show. The same crew goes under Gaylord's loaner parka at ice!, and black hides a spilled drink on Lower Broadway.
03Dark indigo straight jeansGaylord's what-to-wear list for ice! names long pants beside the parka they provide and closed-toe shoes. A full-length straight jean covers the ankle between the parka hem and the boot in a 9°F room. Dark indigo also passes everywhere else on the night, because the Opry sets no dress code. Skip rips; NOAA's 8pm normal on the sidewalk is about 6°C / 43°F.
04Tan leather ankle boots, closed toe, rubber treadGaylord requires closed-toe shoes on the ice! slides and says hiking boots are not necessary because the pathways are carpeted, so you do not need a winter boot for the 9°F rooms. You need a tread for the rest of the night. Rain falls on about 11 December days, and rubber grips a wet Broadway curb where a leather-soled cowboy boot slides.
05Small brown leather crossbody, zip topThe Opry House does not allow oversized bags, says all bags are subject to search, and has nowhere to check one. A small zip crossbody clears that door and stays on your body in a Lower Broadway crowd. Plan around Big Bash separately: the 2025 rules set a clear-bag policy, and the 2026 bag rules are not posted yet, so check them before 31 December.
06Cream ribbed knit beanieGaylord calls hats strongly recommended inside ice! and sells them on site, so bring your own. The same beanie earns its place on New Year's Eve, when you stand on the mall from a 5:30pm gate to a midnight Music Note while the night falls toward 1°C / 34°F. In 2025 the Big Bash merchandise trailers sold beanies and gloves beside the T-shirts.
07Tan knit gloves with leather palmsGaylord lists gloves beside hats as strongly recommended at ice!, and a calf-length parka with a hood still leaves your hands bare at 9°F. Knit with leather palms covers the 20 to 40 minutes most guests spend inside and suits a 6°C / 43°F walk back to the car. Tan follows the jacket.
08Black thermal long-sleeveThis is the Big Bash layer. Gates open at 5:30pm on 31 December 2026 and the Music Note drops at midnight, so you stand on Bicentennial Capitol Mall for more than six hours while the night falls toward 1°C / 34°F. A thin thermal under the merino adds warmth without bulk, and it is thin enough to leave on in a heated bar on the walk back.
Day to night
Merino crew · dark jeans · tan ankle boots · waxed jacket open, beanie in the pocket. An 11°C / 52°F afternoon at Gaylord Opryland: ice! on your timed slot, closed toes on for the slides. To walk the resort without a ticket, go Sunday to Thursday between 29 November and 17 December, or arrive before 3pm.
Thermal under the crew · beanie and gloves on. Opry Country Christmas at the Opry House at 7pm, with the jacket folded on your lap for the show, then Lower Broadway, where it comes off at every bar and goes back on at every door into a night falling toward 1°C / 34°F.
A suggested look — tan waxed-cotton western jacket, black merino crew, dark indigo straight jeans, tan leather ankle boots, cream ribbed beanie.
What to avoid
- Open-toe shoes at ice!, where the slides require closed toes
- Arriving more than five minutes after your ice! slot
- A suede jacket on one of about 11 wet days
- An oversized bag at the Opry House, where every bag is searched
- One heavy layer for a warm seat and a 6°C / 43°F walk out
Frequently asked questions
Mild by day, near freezing by dawn, and wet. NOAA NCEI's climate normals for Nashville International (USW00013897) give a December high of 11.2°C / 52°F and a low of 0.7°C, with 4.43 inches of precipitation on about 11 days and only 0.4 inches of snow. About 16 nights fall to freezing or below, and the coldest hour is 7am. NOAA's hourly normal for 8pm is about 6°C / 43°F, the air you walk out into after a show. On 1 December the sun sets at 4:33pm; on the 21st it rises at 6:54am and sets at 4:36pm.
A tan waxed-cotton western jacket, a black merino crew, a black thermal, dark straight jeans, tan closed-toe ankle boots with a rubber tread, a cream beanie, tan knit gloves and a small brown zip crossbody. That covers an 11°C / 52°F afternoon, a warm Opry House seat, 9°F inside ice! with Gaylord's parka on top, and a night that falls to 1°C / 34°F. Leave open-toe shoes, suede and a large tote at home.
Their coat, your own hat and gloves, closed-toe shoes and long pants. Christmas at Gaylord Opryland runs from 6 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, and this year's ice! is "Home Alone", carved from 2 million pounds of ice by 40 artisans from Harbin, China. Gaylord's FAQ says the attraction "is kept at a brisk 9°F to maintain the arctic environment" and that every guest receives a complimentary calf-length parka with a hood. Closed-toe shoes are required for the slides; hiking boots are not, because the paths are carpeted. Most guests stay 20 to 40 minutes. Tickets are sold only in advance, at Tickets.GaylordOpryland.com, and are single-entry.
Early December for the resort, late December for New Year's Eve. Gaylord guarantees resort access after 3pm only to overnight guests and ticket holders on Fridays and Saturdays from 20 November and daily from 18 to 31 December, so the 4–5 and 11–12 December weekends are restricted too. On 31 December, Big Bash is free at Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, gates at 5:30pm, with Little Big Town, The Red Clay Strays and HARDY. Deana Ivey of the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp calls New Year's Eve "one of the nights Nashville shines brightest". The 2026 bag rules are not posted; in 2025 the page said "A clear bag policy will be in place, and bags may be searched." The month cools as it goes: NOAA's daily normal high slips from 13.3°C / 56°F on 1 December to 9.7°C / 49°F on the 31st.
December is wetter; January is colder. NOAA's airport normals give December 11.2°C / 52°F by day and 0.7°C at night, with 4.43 inches of precipitation on about 11 days and 0.4 inches of snow. January drops to a high of 9.5°C and a low of −1.1°C / 30°F, with 4.02 inches, 2 inches of snow and about 19 freezing nights against December's 16. December's evenings run between warm rooms, 9°F ice and wet sidewalks, so this capsule is a waxed jacket, thin layers and a loaner parka. Our January guide swaps in a quilted coat and a lug sole for ice on the pavement by morning, with the Opry back at the Ryman.
Dark denim, boots and a jacket that comes off easily, and the Opry asks for nothing dressier. Its FAQ says there is no formal dress code and that you will see "everything from faded jeans to business suits, cowboy hats to your Sunday best" in the seats of the Opry House, the 4,440-seat hall where Roy Acuff opened the first show on 16 March 1974, the night after the Opry's last Friday show at the Ryman. Nashville also makes its own jeans: Imogene + Willie opened in 2009, when, in the brand's words, "we set up shop in an old service station in Nashville, TN." Dark, unripped denim with a leather boot and a short jacket carries you from a Broadway bar to an Opry seat.
