What to Wear in Asheville in December

Pack for rain at freezing, not for snow. NOAA's figures for Asheville Regional Airport give December 51.5°F (10.8°C) afternoons, −0.4°C nights and 4.18 inches of rain across 10 days, more than November's 3.72. The National Weather Service's daily figures put the average low at 32°F from 10 December, sliding to 29.4°F by the 31st, and its airport snowfall record shows mostly a trace in recent Decembers. Snow and ice belong to the high ground: the National Park Service says they close sections of the Parkway in winter, and Mount Mitchell State Park shuts on Christmas Day. Down in the valley, that makes December a month for wet wool. Take a long loden coat, cashmere under it, smooth leather boots and a clear umbrella for Biltmore.
