TL;DR

Siem Reap in January: 32°C / 90°F afternoons, 20°C / 68°F nights, 93,491 Angkor passes sold to foreigners in January 2026 and a gate that opens at 5:00am.

Do
  • Sand cotton cardigan — Angkor Wat opens at 5:00am, close to the night's 20°C low
  • White puff-sleeve blouse — elbow sleeves cover the bare shoulders the code prohibits
  • Indigo denim midi skirt — a mid-calf hem clears the knee rule on the climb
  • Dark navy relaxed trousers — a full-length leg for every temple on the Small Circuit
  • Charcoal canvas trainers — the Upper Tower's steps are steep, and the code discourages heels
  • Tobacco straw fedora — January has the least rain of the year, 3.7mm, so plan for sun
Don't
  • Starting Angkor Wat at mid-morning — you lose the 5:00am opening in a month that sold 93,491 foreign passes in 2026
  • Promising under-12s the Upper Tower — its steep steps are only for visitors aged 12 and above
  • Shorts or a sleeveless top on the climb — Angkor Enterprise prohibits both in sacred places
  • Buying the pass on the morning — buy after 4:45pm the day before and that evening's sunset is included

January at Angkor is a crowd month, and your answer is the clock. Angkor Enterprise's own statistics show more passes sold to foreign visitors in January than in December in each of the last two seasons: 146,140 in January 2025 and 93,491 in January 2026. Angkor Wat opens at 5:00am, and DWD's table for Siemreap-Angkor gives January the lowest mean low of the year, 20.4°C, against a 31.7°C afternoon. Start in a cardigan, climb in a sleeve and a hem below the knee, and finish the big temple before noon. The code's own words: "Respectful dress is strongly encouraged in Angkor."

January is Angkor's crowd month, so the plan is the outfit: a sand cardigan for a 5:00am gate near 20°C, a sleeve and a long hem for the climb, and a straw brim for a 32°C noon.

The capsule

  1. Sand cotton cardigan, crew neck, button front
    01
Sand cotton cardigan, crew neck, button front

For the hour before sunrise. DWD's table gives January the lowest mean low of the year, 20.4°C, and Angkor Wat opens at 5:00am, close to that low, with sunrise not until about 6:31am in mid-January. A cotton cardigan worn open over the blouse covers your shoulders at the gate, then rolls into the crossbody once the sun is up.

  2. White Puff-Sleeve Blouse
    02
    White puff-sleeve blouse, elbow-length sleeves

Your climbing top. Angkor Enterprise prohibits bare shoulders in sacred places, and full sleeves gathered at the elbow cover them once the cardigan comes off. A loose white blouse lets air through at January's 59% mean humidity on DWD's table, and white sits under the sand cardigan at dawn and beside the indigo skirt and the navy trousers later in the day.

  3. Indigo denim A-line midi skirt
    03
Indigo denim A-line midi skirt, mid-calf

Your skirt answer to the rule: the code prohibits skirts above the knee in sacred places. A gored A-line to mid-calf passes at every gate, and the flare at the hem leaves room for high temple steps. Denim is the right weight for a 5:00am start near 20°C and holds its shape all morning. Indigo goes with the white blouse and the terracotta shirt.

  4. Dark Navy Relaxed Trousers
    04
Dark navy relaxed straight-leg trousers, full length

Shorts above the knee are the first thing the code names, and a full-length leg ends the question across a 1-day pass, from Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm to Banteay Kdei and Srah Srang. A relaxed cut gives your knee room on steep steps. Dark navy hides a long day's dust and pairs with the white blouse and the terracotta shirt.

  5. Terracotta linen short-sleeve camp-collar shirt
    05
    Terracotta linen short-sleeve camp-collar shirt

For the hot half of the day, when January reaches 31.7°C on DWD's table. A short sleeve still covers the shoulder, and linen with an open collar moves air at the neck. Terracotta answers Banteay Srei, which Angkor Enterprise describes as "built largely of red sandstone", 25km north-east of the main group. Tuck it into the skirt or wear it loose over the trousers.

  6. Tobacco straw fedora with a pale-blue band
    06
Tobacco straw fedora with a pale-blue band

January has the least rain of the year on DWD's table, 3.7mm, so after 9am the sun is the condition you dress for. A shaped straw brim shades your eyes and neck on the open causeways between temples, and the woven crown lets heat out. Tobacco brown suits the terracotta shirt and the cognac bag; the pale-blue band picks up the indigo.

  7. Charcoal Canvas Sneakers
    07
Charcoal canvas trainers with cream soles

Angkor Enterprise itself calls the Upper Tower's steps steep, and its code discourages high heels inside the temples. Lace-up canvas trainers with a flat, thick sole keep your footing on worn sandstone in the dark at 5:00am and stay comfortable through a full Small Circuit. Charcoal hides dust and sits with navy, indigo and terracotta alike.

  8. Cognac leather flap crossbody with a gold box clasp
    08
Cognac leather flap crossbody with a box clasp

Angkor Enterprise discourages backpacks inside the temples, so a crossbody carries the day: pass, water and the folded cardigan once the sun is up. Angkor Enterprise needs a photo for 3-day and 7-day passes, and the box clasp keeps a $62 or $72 pass shut while you climb. Cognac sits between the tobacco hat and the terracotta shirt.

Day to night

Morning

Sunrise plan. Sand cardigan open over the white puff-sleeve blouse · indigo denim midi skirt · charcoal trainers · cognac crossbody. Buy the pass at Angkor Enterprise's Road 60 office after 4:45pm the day before, which also lets you in for that evening's sunset; be at Angkor Wat for the 5:00am opening, with sunrise at about 6:31am in mid-January, then take the Upper Tower if everyone in your group is 12 or over.

Evening

Banteay Srei, then dinner. Terracotta camp shirt · dark navy trousers · tobacco fedora · charcoal trainers · cognac crossbody. Banteay Srei, consecrated on 22 April 967, is open from 7:30am to 5:30pm; sunset comes at about 5:56pm in mid-January, and the night falls toward 20°C.

A suggested look — sand cotton cardigan, white cotton blouse, indigo denim a-line midi skirt, charcoal canvas trainers.

What to avoid

  • A mid-morning start at Angkor Wat in a month that sold 93,491 foreign passes in 2026
  • Shorts, short skirts or bare shoulders on the climb
  • An Upper Tower plan for children under 12
  • Heels on Angkor's steep temple steps
  • A pass bought on the morning of your visit instead of after 4:45pm the day before

Frequently asked questions

Hot by day, fresh before dawn and the driest month of the year by rainfall. Deutscher Wetterdienst's (DWD) climate table for Siemreap-Angkor gives January a mean high of 31.7°C and a mean low of 20.4°C, the lowest of the year, with 3.7mm of rain on one or two days and 59% relative humidity. NOAA's daily records for the airport, 2006–2020, give 31.0°C and 21.5°C. Afternoon and dawn sit 11.3°C apart. Sunrise holds between 6:27am and 6:32am all month, and sunset moves from 5:48pm on 1 January to 6:04pm on the 31st.

A sand cotton cardigan, a white puff-sleeve blouse, an indigo denim midi skirt, dark navy relaxed trousers, a terracotta linen camp shirt, a tobacco straw fedora, charcoal canvas trainers and a cognac crossbody. That covers Angkor Enterprise's dress rule, a 5:00am start near 20°C, a climb up steep steps and a 32°C / 90°F afternoon in full sun. Leave shorts, sleeveless tops and heels at home.

Plan it the day before. Angkor Enterprise's monthly statistics count 93,491 foreign pass buyers in January 2026 and 146,140 in January 2025, so this is no month to improvise. Its ticket page is plain: "The Angkor Ticket Office (Angkor Enterprise) is the only place where you can purchase entrance tickets for the Angkor Archaeological Park." Buy after 4:45pm the day before and you can enter that evening for sunset as well. A 1-day pass ($37) covers the Small Circuit; 3-day ($62) and 7-day ($72) passes add the Grand Circuit and need a photo. Angkor Wat opens at 5:00am, Bayon and Banteay Srei at 7:30am. UNESCO gives the scale: "Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century."

Early January has the public holidays. New Year's Day, Friday 1 January, and Victory over Genocide Day, Thursday 7 January, are both holidays under Sub-Decree No. 198, as Commerce Cambodia reported the 2027 calendar; the next is International Women's Day on 8 March. Late January brings the month's latest sunrises, 6:32am from 17 to 30 January, and a little more evening, with sunset at 6:04pm on the 31st. Whichever week you pick, Angkor Wat opens at 5:00am every day.

January is drier and has the lower low; December has the lower high. DWD's table gives January 31.7°C by day and 20.4°C at night against December's 30.6°C and 20.7°C, with 3.7mm of rain against 7.3mm and 59% humidity against 64%. Sunrise comes later in January, about 6:31am in mid-month against 6:19am. The crowds differ more than the weather: Angkor Enterprise sold 93,491 passes to foreigners in January 2026 against 87,936 in December 2025, and 146,140 against 125,349 a season earlier. December has the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon on Sunday 6 December; our December guide covers race morning.

At Artisans Angkor, which runs daily guided tours of its craft centre on Stung Thmey Street from 7:30am to 6pm, and of its silk farm on National Road 6 in Puok District from 7:30am to 5:30pm. The farm puts the revival plainly: "The practice had almost disappeared when we actively sought to stimulate it in the 1990s." Its first artisans were trained in the 1990s by masters in the restoration of temple sculpture. The carving they learned from is more than a thousand years old: Banteay Srei was consecrated on 22 April 967, built by courtiers rather than a king, and it is "built largely of red sandstone", the colour of the terracotta shirt. A silk scarf from the farm is the one souvenir this capsule leaves room for.
