TL;DR

Bangkok in January: 33°C / 91°F afternoons, 23°C / 73°F nights, Biennale works inside three temples and a PM2.5 reading to check each morning.

Do
  • Teal long-sleeve linen shirt — sleeves down at Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Prayoon, rolled up between them
  • Saffron tiered midi skirt — Wat Pho prohibits shorts above the knee for women
  • Pale sand linen trousers — Wat Pho's own page says trousers are permitted
  • Sand linen shirt-dress — one piece for a route of three temples and two museums
  • Tan leather slides — Wat Pho has your shoes on a shelf before every religious building
  • White N95 in the bag — last season Bangkok went over Thailand's PM2.5 standard on 22 days
Don't
  • Shorts at Wat Pho — its rules prohibit women's shorts above the knee
  • A sleeveless top on an art day — three of the Biennale's venues are working temples
  • Setting out without the Air4Thai reading — 12–15 January 2026 averaged 55.18 µg/m³
  • Expecting to wander the Jim Thompson House alone — every visit is a guided tour

January in Bangkok means temple days and haze days. The Bangkok Art Biennale, open from 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, puts works inside Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Prayoon, so an art route is also a temple route, and Wat Pho's own rule applies: "Tourists are appreciated to dress politely, no shorts, although trousers are permitted." TMD's normals for Bangkok Metropolis give a 32.7°C afternoon and a night that falls to 23.4°C. Haze is the second thing to plan for. Between 1 November 2025 and 31 January 2026 the Pollution Control Department counted 22 days over Thailand's PM2.5 standard in Bangkok. Pack sleeves, long hems, slides and an N95.

In January the art hangs in the temples, so the gallery dress code is the temple's: a sleeve, a hem below the knee, shoes you can step out of, and an N95 in the bag for the days the haze settles.

The capsule

  1. Teal long-sleeve linen shirt
    01
    Teal long-sleeve linen shirt

Your temple layer for an art route. Wat Pho asks for polite dress, and covered shoulders are the safe choice at Wat Arun and Wat Prayoon as well, so the sleeve goes down at each gate and rolls up on the walk between them. Linen dries quickly at 67.9% humidity, and teal sits between the saffron skirt and the sand trousers.

  2. White cotton knit polo, short sleeve, open placket
    02
    White knit polo, short sleeves

For a morning at the Jim Thompson House, which opens at 9am and is seen only on a guided tour. A collar and a proper sleeve read as polite dress indoors and out, and a white knit breathes on a 32.7°C day. Wear it with the pale sand trousers, then button the teal shirt over it when the route reaches a temple.

  3. Pale sand linen wide-leg trousers, full length
    03
Pale sand linen wide-leg trousers, full length

Trousers are what Wat Pho names as permitted, and a full-length leg covers the knee whether you stand or sit on a hall floor. Linen lets air move on a 32.7°C afternoon. A flat front and a proper waistband keep the line neat from the temple courtyards to the Jim Thompson House.

  4. Saffron-yellow tiered midi skirt with an elastic waist

Wat Pho's rule for women is specific: "Traditional or polite dress is required, while shorts above the knees are prohibited for woman." A three-tier skirt to mid-calf clears it with room to spare, and the gathered tiers let air move around your legs at 32.7°C. Saffron is the bright piece in a capsule of teal, white and sand.

  5. Sand linen shirt-dress with roll-tab sleeves and a tie belt

One piece for a long art day. TAT lists the Biennale's venues from Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Prayoon to Museum Siam and the National Museum Bangkok, and this goes into all of them: sleeves unrolled for the temples, buttoned up on their tabs outside, and a hem at mid-calf. Sand linen pairs with the tan slides and the bucket bag.

  6. Tan Broad-Strap Leather Slide
    06
    Tan broad-strap leather slides

Three temples on one route means three rounds of shoe shelves, and at Wat Pho your shoes come off before every religious building. A broad-strap slide steps off and back on without a buckle, and its contoured footbed takes a day on temple courtyards and museum floors. Tan sits with sand and saffron, and smooth leather wipes clean at the end of the day.

  7. White N95 Respirator Mask
    07
    White N95 respirator

Last season gave the reason. Bangkok's PM2.5 averaged 55.18 µg/m³ from 12 to 15 January 2026, against Thailand's 37.5 standard, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Council's record. Check Air4Thai, the Pollution Control Department's site and app, before you set out; last season the BMA sent cell-broadcast alerts, in English too, when a district passed 75 µg/m³. One cupped N95 rides in the bag all day.

  8. Sand suede drawstring bucket bag
    08
Sand suede drawstring bucket bag, crossbody strap

An art day in the temples is a day of busy hands: shoes off at each hall, a ticket out at each gate, the shirt off between them. A crossbody strap keeps both hands free, and the drawstring closes over the N95 and the folded teal shirt. Sand suede is fine in a month with rain on about two days, 23.6mm in all.

Day to night

Morning

Biennale morning. Teal linen shirt · saffron tiered midi skirt · tan slides · sand bucket bag with the N95 inside. Check Air4Thai at breakfast, start at Wat Pho when it opens at 8am (300 baht), then cross the river to Wat Arun and on to Wat Prayoon, the third temple venue.

Evening

Jim Thompson House, then dinner. Sand linen shirt-dress · tan slides · sand bucket bag. The house is open from 9am to 6pm on guided tours only, across the klong from the Bahn Krua weavers; sunset comes at about 6:09pm in mid-January, with the night falling toward 23°C.

  • A haze morning without checking Air4Thai first
  • Lace-ups on a day of shoe shelves
  • An unguided visit to the Jim Thompson House

Frequently asked questions

Hot in the afternoon, warm at night, with very little rain. The Thai Meteorological Department's (TMD) normals for its Bangkok Metropolis station give January an average high of 32.7°C / 91°F and a low of 23.4°C, with 23.6mm of rain on about two days and 67.9% relative humidity. Thailand's seasons page, sourced to the meteorological department, puts winter "between mid-October and mid-February", but an average January night stays above the 22.9°C top of TMD's cool band. Sunrise holds between 6:41am and 6:45am all month, and sunset moves from 6:01pm on 1 January to 6:17pm on the 31st.

A teal long-sleeve linen shirt, a white knit polo, pale sand linen trousers, a saffron tiered midi skirt, a sand linen shirt-dress, tan leather slides, a white N95 and a sand bucket bag. That covers Wat Pho's rules, two more temple venues on the Biennale route, a guided morning at the Jim Thompson House and a 33°C afternoon. Leave the shorts at home; Wat Pho prohibits them above the knee for women.

Temple clothes, because three of the venues are temples. TAT lists Wat Arun, Wat Pho and Wat Prayoon among the 2026 venues, alongside Museum Siam, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, One Bangkok, centralwOrld, Siam Paragon, the National Museum Bangkok and the Art Centre at Silpakorn University. The fifth edition runs from 29 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 under an Angels & Mara theme. Temple rules come from the temples: Wat Pho asks for polite dress, bars shorts above the knee for women and has you leave your shoes on a shelf, and covered shoulders and knees are the safe choice at Wat Arun and Wat Prayoon. TAT's governor, Thapanee Kiatphaibool, framed the edition this way: "Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 reflects TAT’s direction to position Thailand as a high-value and meaningful destination, where culture, creativity and contemporary identity create deeper reasons to travel."

Early January has the holidays and the families. New Year's Day, Friday 1 January, is the month's only bank holiday on the Bank of Thailand's 2027 list; the next is Monday 22 February. Saturday 9 January is National Children's Day, set on the second Saturday of January by a 1965 cabinet resolution, and last year Government House opened to families from 8am to 3pm. In mid-January last season, PM2.5 averaged 55.18 µg/m³ from 12 to 15 January 2026 against a 37.5 standard, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Council's record, so check Air4Thai whatever the date. Late January brings longer evenings, with sunset at 6:17pm on the 31st, and the Biennale stays open until 28 February.

December is cooler, drier and less humid. TMD's normals give January 32.7°C by day and 23.4°C at night against December's 32.3°C and 23.2°C, twice the rain (23.6mm on about two days, against 11.6mm on about one) and 67.9% humidity against 65.6%. Sunset moves from 5:53pm in mid-December to 6:09pm in mid-January. The calendars differ more than the weather. December is the old city's ceremonial month, with the Grand Palace closed on 5 December and the royal cremation ceremonies for Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother on 15–19 December; our December guide covers both. In January the palace calendar shows every day open as of late October, and the month belongs to the Biennale's temple venues.

It is the home of the American whose company, as the brand puts it, helped bring Thai silk to global prominence. The James H.W. Thompson Foundation dates the company: "In 1950, The Thai Silk Company was founded and it has become the leading exporter of Thai silk that soon became renowned worldwide." The brand's About page gives the same year, and its timeline credits Thai silk's appearance in The King and I (1956) with lifting demand. Thompson was awarded the Order of the White Elephant in 1962. He built the house in 1958–59 from old teak houses, across the klong from the Bahn Krua silk-weaving community, and it is open daily from 9am to 6pm on guided tours only. For the visit, the white polo and the sand trousers are enough.
