The 10-Piece Thanksgiving Carry-On Capsule: Four Days, One Bag
Wednesday to Saturday, from the closet you already own.
The Sunday after Thanksgiving 2025 was TSA's busiest day in three years of figures. Fly home Saturday instead, with ten pieces in one carry-on and no wait at the carousel.
- Wear the bulkiest pieces on the plane: the quilted coat, the lug-sole boots and the blanket scarf take the most room in a bag
- Pack one dinner outfit that rolls: a wool-crepe pleated skirt and a merino crew come out of a bag without a fold line
- Build on two bottoms that take all three knits: dark indigo jeans for the travel days, a cranberry skirt for dinner
- Check the destination's weather, not home's: Chicago averages 9°C / 48°F in November, Miami 27°C / 81°F (NOAA)
- Fly home Saturday: TSA screened 2,696,816 people on the Saturday after Thanksgiving 2025 and 3,134,613 on the Sunday
- The family gravy in the carry-on: TSA allows gravy only at 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less
- Fully wrapped gifts: TSA warned in 2024 that a wrapped gift will 'probably' be opened at screening
- A cream silk blouse for dinner: it's the only dinner top in the bag, so pick one a gravy drip can't ruin
- Packing for home's weather: November days average 27°C / 81°F in Miami and 9°C / 48°F in Chicago (NOAA)
The Emily Post Institute's Thanksgiving hosting advice sets the length of the visit: 'Three days is usually the standard.' Add a travel day and you have four, the right size for a carry-on: travel Wednesday, dinner Thursday, a slow Friday, and home on Saturday, ahead of the crowd. AAA forecast a record 81.8 million Thanksgiving travelers for 2025 and named Sunday and Monday the busiest return days; TSA's count for Sunday 30 November 2025 was 3,134,613, more than on any day of 2024 or of 2026 so far. So: ten pieces from the closet you already own, one bag, and a Saturday flight.
Four days, ten pieces, one bag, and a Saturday flight home.
The 10 pieces
01Dark indigo straight jeansThe travel bottom, worn on the plane both ways. Dark indigo reads one notch above everyday at a family breakfast, the level the Emily Post Institute sets for a Thanksgiving guest, and it hides an airport coffee.
02Cranberry pleated midi skirtThe dinner bottom. Sunray pleats in wool crepe roll in a bag and drop back into line on the hanger, and a drip of cranberry sauce disappears into the color, where ivory or camel would show it.
03Plum merino crewThe dinner top. Ribbed cuffs gather the sleeves at the wrist, which keeps them clear of the stove (the NFPA's rule for any cook: no loose clothing near the heat), and plum against cranberry looks planned.
04Navy-and-ecru breton knitFriday's sweater, for the walk or the Black Friday line. Stripes hide a fold line better than a plain knit after two days in the bag, and navy goes with both bottoms.
05Ivory fine merino crewThe base layer. Under the breton on a cold porch, alone with jeans in an oven-warm kitchen, under the coat on the plane. Fine-gauge merino packs flat.
06Charcoal quilted coat, knee lengthWorn on the plane, never packed. Knee length keeps you warm over the jeans or down to the skirt's midi hem on a Chicago November night that averages 1°C / 34°F (NOAA), and diamond quilting doesn't crush in an overhead bin.
07Black lug-sole Chelsea bootsWorn on travel days. Elastic sides pull off fast at a shoes-off front door, and a deep lug holds on wet leaves and a slushy curb.
08Black leather low-top sneakersThe second pair, for Friday's walk and a warm destination. Plain black leather goes with the jeans and the skirt and packs flat against the wall of the bag.
09Cognac leather zip-top toteThe personal item. A zip top keeps the laptop and the gifts closed at a crowded gate, with the gifts inside left unwrapped until you arrive.
10Charcoal herringbone blanket scarfScarf at the gate, blanket in a cold cabin or a cold guest room, and the extra warmth that lets the coat stay open in a mild city.
6 outfits, 10 pieces
How 6 comes from 10: start with the 6 anchored hooks below, then rotate the capsule's compatible layers, shoes, proportions, and dress-code registers around them. The count is not raw permutation math; every swap still has to keep the silhouette, weather, and occasion intentional.
- 01Wednesday flight
Out on Wednesday 25 November. Everything bulky is on you. TSA screened 2,753,036 people on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving 2025, so give security time.
- Dark indigo straight jeans
- Ivory fine merino crew
- Charcoal quilted coat, knee length
- Black lug-sole Chelsea boots
- Cognac leather zip-top tote
- Charcoal herringbone blanket scarf
- 02Thanksgiving dinner
Thursday 26 November. The skirt and the merino come out of the bag; the boots come off at the door if the house is shoes-off.
- Cranberry pleated midi skirt
- Plum merino crew
- Black lug-sole Chelsea boots
- 03Friday walk
A walk off the pie or the Black Friday line. Boston averages 11°C / 52°F by day in November (NOAA): breton, coat open, scarf on.
- Dark indigo straight jeans
- Navy-and-ecru breton knit
- Black leather low-top sneakers
- Charcoal quilted coat, knee length
- Charcoal herringbone blanket scarf
- 04Leftovers night
The dinner skirt again, dressed down with the breton and sneakers for a night of leftovers and a movie.
- Cranberry pleated midi skirt
- Navy-and-ecru breton knit
- Black leather low-top sneakers
- 05Warm-city afternoon
Los Angeles averages 21°C / 70°F in November (NOAA): the ivory merino alone with jeans, the coat left at the house.
- Dark indigo straight jeans
- Ivory fine merino crew
- Black leather low-top sneakers
- 06Saturday flight home
Saturday 28 November, a day ahead of the Sunday peak. The breton goes over the ivory merino, and the dinner skirt rides home rolled in the bag.
- Dark indigo straight jeans
- Navy-and-ecru breton knit
- Ivory fine merino crew
- Charcoal quilted coat, knee length
- Black lug-sole Chelsea boots
- Cognac leather zip-top tote
- Charcoal herringbone blanket scarf

Build it in 7 steps
- 01Check the weather where you're going. Our city guides give NOAA November averages: Chicago 9°C / 48°F by day and 1°C / 34°F at night, Boston 11°C / 52°F, Los Angeles 21°C / 70°F, Miami 27°C / 81°F.
- 02Book Wednesday out and Saturday back. The Emily Post Institute puts a standard visit at three days, and Saturday dodges the Sunday peak, TSA's busiest day of 2025.
- 03Pick two bottoms: dark indigo jeans for the travel days and a cranberry pleated skirt for dinner. Both go with every top below.
- 04Pick three knits that layer: an ivory fine merino base, a plum merino for dinner, and a breton for the day after.
- 05Wear the coat, the boots and the scarf on the plane. They are the bulkiest pieces and the ones you need at both ends.
- 06Pack one flat second pair: plain black leather sneakers.
- 07Pack the tote last, with gifts unwrapped and liquids in one quart-size bag. TSA allows 3.4 oz (100 ml) per container, and that includes gravy.
What to avoid
- Gravy in the carry-on: TSA allows it only at 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less
- Gifts wrapped before the flight: TSA's 2024 advice was to leave them unwrapped until you arrive
- A cream silk blouse at the table: one drip of gravy and it's done for the trip, with no second dinner top in the bag
- Packing for home's weather: Miami's November days average 18°C warmer than Chicago's (NOAA)
- Booking the Sunday flight home: the Sunday after Thanksgiving was TSA's busiest day of 2025
Frequently asked questions
Ten pieces from the closet you already own: dark indigo jeans, a cranberry pleated skirt, a plum merino crew, a breton knit, an ivory merino base layer, a knee-length quilted coat, lug-sole Chelsea boots, black leather sneakers, a zip-top tote and a blanket scarf. They make six outfits from Wednesday to Saturday, Thanksgiving dinner included, and all of it fits in one carry-on with the coat, boots and scarf worn on the plane.
Yes, for the three-day visit the Emily Post Institute calls 'usually the standard', plus a travel day. Wear five pieces on the plane (coat, boots, scarf, jeans, ivory merino), carry the tote as your personal item, and pack the other four: the cranberry skirt and plum merino for dinner, the breton and the sneakers. Check your airline's own size limit before you pack.
The Sunday after. On Sunday 30 November 2025 TSA screened 3,134,613 people, the highest day in its 2024, 2025 and 2026 figures, and AAA calls Sunday and Monday the busiest return days. Thanksgiving Day itself was the quietest of the week, 1,559,165 screened, and AAA says it's cheaper to fly that day.
Your bulkiest pieces: the knee-length quilted coat, lug-sole Chelsea boots and the blanket scarf, over dark jeans and a fine merino crew. The boots pull off fast at a shoes-off front door, and the scarf doubles as a blanket on a cold flight.
Gravy, only 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less: TSA treats it as a liquid, so a bigger jar goes in a checked bag. Wrapped gifts can travel, but TSA warned in 2024 that a fully wrapped one will probably be opened at screening, so wrap them when you arrive.
Pack for the destination. November daytime averages run from 9°C / 48°F in Chicago and 11°C / 52°F in Boston to 21°C / 70°F in Los Angeles and 27°C / 81°F in Miami (NOAA). This capsule is built for the cold end. In Los Angeles, leave the coat at the house and wear the ivory merino alone with jeans; at Miami's 27°C, swap the three knits for cotton T-shirts, because merino and denim run hot above 25°C.
Mostly. December runs 5–6°C colder than November by day in the northern cities: Chicago 3°C / 37°F, Boston 6°C / 43°F, New York 7°C / 44°F (NOAA). Swap the sneakers for a second warm knit and keep the boots on.
