What to Wear in Miami in November

Pack for the hinge of the year. NOAA's normals for Miami International Airport put November at 81.3°F by day and 68.3°F at night, with 3.53 inches of rain over about 9 days, and the daily normal high falls from 83.3°F on the 1st to 79.7°F on the 30th. The National Weather Service in Miami starts the dry season on 15 October. The Atlantic hurricane season runs until 30 November, and although NOAA's 2026 outlook gave a 55% chance of a below-normal season, NWS Director Ken Graham's warning covers the last month of it too: "It only takes one storm to make for a very bad season." By day the city still dresses for summer. From four o'clock it does not. Joe's Stone Crab reopened on 16 October for its 114th season, and its dress code asks you to skip "hats, beachwear, sportswear, shorts, flip-flops, sliders, tank tops", summed up as "Think pressed, not poolside." So pack two wardrobes that share a suitcase: linen and a swimsuit for the day, pressed trousers and closed shoes for the night.

   Chocolate-brown ruched one-piece

   November is still a swimming month. NOAA's coastal water guide puts the sea at Virginia Key at 78.2°F on average, warmer than the air after dark. A ruched front holds its shape when wet, and chocolate brown sits with the cognac and khaki in the rest of this capsule where a loud print would fight them. Keep it for the sand: Vizcaya does not admit bathing suits, and Joe's lists beachwear among the things to skip after 4pm.

   Ecru and sky-blue striped linen shirt

   Wear it open over the swimsuit at noon and buttoned at the Book Fair. The Street Fair runs from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November on Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus downtown, and the Friday, 10am to 7pm, is free for everyone. An 81°F afternoon between author tents is linen weather. Rolled sleeves come down when the sun moves round, and the stripe hides the creases from a day folded in a bag.

   Khaki high-waist pleated trousers

   Your way into dinner. Joe's Stone Crab turns away shorts after 4pm, and Carbone, also south of Fifth Street, bans them at any hour. A high waist and front pleats read pressed rather than poolside, and khaki cotton sits cooler than denim on a 68°F night. Tuck the striped shirt in and you are dressed for both rooms.

   Ivory sleeveless linen midi, button front

   For a morning at Vizcaya. James Deering's 1916 winter estate asks that "all visitors must remain fully clothed at all times" and turns away bathing suits, mesh and sheer clothing, so an opaque linen midi carries you through the Main House and the gardens without a second thought. A drawstring waist keeps it cool on a humid afternoon, and with the linen jacket over it the same dress goes to dinner.

   Navy pointed low-heel pumps

   Vizcaya recommends "closed-toe, low-heeled shoes" for its coral floors, grass, gravel and sand, and warns you off open-toe sandals and high heels. A pointed low heel answers that, then goes on to dinner: Carbone's dress code bans open-toed shoes, and Joe's bans sliders and flip-flops. Navy works with khaki, ivory and the blue stripe in the shirt.

   Cognac leather camera crossbody

   Hands free in a crowd. The Veterans Day parade steps off at 11:11am on Wednesday 11 November along Ocean Drive from 5th to 15th Street, and the Book Fair fills downtown the week after. A zip top keeps a phone and card shut, the strap goes across your body, and cognac leather matches the khaki trousers.

   Stone unstructured linen jacket

   For 68°F nights and air-conditioned dining rooms. By the 30th the normal low is 66.3°F, and a restaurant with the air conditioning up runs colder than that. Unstructured linen weighs almost nothing in a suitcase, goes over the midi or the shirt, and moves either one to the pressed side of Joe's line.

   Yellow rubber flip-flops

   For the sand and the walk to it, nowhere else. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau promises "you'll get some use out of your beach sandals – even mid winter", and November is the easy end of that. Joe's names flip-flops on its after-4pm list and Carbone bans open toes, so these go back to the hotel before dinner. Rubber rinses clean of salt and sand under a beach shower.
