What to Wear to Christmas Markets in Berlin

Packing philosophy

Dress for damp zero and early dark. NOAA NCEI's figures for Berlin-Tempelhof, a station Deutscher Wetterdienst operates, give December 4.4°C by day and −0.1°C at night, with 44.2mm of precipitation across about 14 days, and the shortest days give about 7h 40m of light with sunset before four. The markets are evening events, so you arrive in the dark and stand at zero on damp stone. That calls for a coat long enough to cover your knees, insulated rather than merely wool, a hat, and a lug sole. At a market one hand holds a mug and the other needs to be free, so leave the umbrella and trust the coat's hood.

What the dress code actually is

Berlin does not dress up for its markets, and black is the city's default. The rules are the markets' own. WeihnachtsZauber on the Gendarmenmarkt charges a small entry fee, €2 on the paired December guide's figures, and is free on weekday mornings until 2pm; it runs from 23 November to 31 December. The market at Schloss Charlottenburg runs to 27 December but closes on the 24th, and Spandau's old-town market closes on the 22nd. Shops close at 2pm on Christmas Eve, a Thursday this year. A zip bag in front, and a coat you can stand in, are the only conventions that matter.
