What to Wear to Christmas Markets in Vienna

Packing philosophy

Dress for standing, not walking. So the coat reaches below the knee, the boots are lined and lugged for wet stone, and the gloves are thin enough to hold a mug and tap a card. Navy and cognac hide the spatter a camel coat collects.

What the dress code actually is

There is no dress code at a Vienna market, but there is a register. Vienna dresses darker and more formally in December than most of Europe, and the paired December guide describes the city's palette running dark for a practical reason: a light coat picks up Glühwein and Punsch spatter within an evening. The Rathausplatz market is the biggest, but not the only one, and they do not all close on the same date: the Rathausplatz runs to 26 December, several others stop on the 23rd, and the Karlsplatz art market and parts of the Schönbrunn market carry on into Silvester. Mugs come with a deposit; return them or keep them. A zip bag worn in front is the sensible habit in any crowd this dense.
