What to Wear to Christmas Markets in Stockholm

Packing philosophy

Dress for slush that freezes. NOAA NCEI's figures for Stockholm-Observatorielunden, a station SMHI operates, give December 2.5°C by day and −1.2°C at night, with 47.9mm of precipitation across about 16 days, fewer than seven of them heavy. With day and night either side of zero, pavements turn to slush by afternoon and freeze again after dark. Skansen's market runs on Fridays to Sundays from 27 November to 20 December, outdoors on Djurgården's hill, and the sun sets at about quarter to three mid-month. So wear a hooded parka, a Nordic patterned knit, navy wool trousers and a lug sole, and go in the morning.

What the dress code actually is

Skansen's market is part of the open-air museum, so you buy museum admission to reach it, and it is as much a handicraft fair as a food market, with glögg and pepparkakor between the stalls. There is no dress code, but Stockholm's winter uniform is navy, black and a patterned knit, and a snowflake yoke fits in exactly. The city's December is busy in the dark: Lucia on Sunday 13 December, and Christmas Eve, a Thursday this year, is Sweden's main day of celebration, when much of the city closes.
