What to Wear to New Year's Eve in Dubai

Packing philosophy

Dress for a long evening in a public place. For the 2025–26 edition Emaar opened free public viewing areas along Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard on a first-come, first-served basis, started the celebrations at 5pm and closed roads from as early as 4pm, pointing visitors to the Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall Metro station. That is up to seven hours on your feet. NOAA's figures for Dubai International give December 26.5°C by day and 17.4°C at night, and Visit Dubai says: "Between December and February, it can sometimes get a little chilly in the evenings. Expect lows of around 14°C," So the capsule is dressy and covered: a long-sleeve champagne satin midi or a satin blouse, a light cardigan for midnight, and low block heels for the walk.

What the dress code actually is

There is no published dress code for the public viewing areas, but they are public space in Dubai, where visitors are expected to dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered, nothing sheer. Hotel and restaurant parties with ticketed views set their own dress codes, usually smart or black tie, and say so on the booking. For the last edition the ticketed Burj Park banned glass, aerosols, tripods, noise-makers and flags larger than 30 by 30 cm, and the public areas allowed food and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is served only in licensed venues. Satin, long sleeves and a midi length meet all of it and still look like New Year's Eve.    Dubai's public viewing areas are public space, and the city expects covered shoulders and knees. A long-sleeve satin midi covers both and still reads as New Year's Eve. Champagne glows under the Burj Khalifa's light show at 17°C / 63°F.

   The alternative to the dress, over trousers or a long skirt. A mandarin collar and long sleeves cover what the city expects, and satin looks like evening without a single sequin. It layers under the cardigan when the night cools.

   Visit Dubai expects December evening lows of around 14°C, and midnight on the boulevard is when you feel it. A fine ivory cardigan goes over the shoulders at 9pm and on properly at midnight, and it is also what you want in a cold mall on the way in.

   Black leather T-bar Mary Janes, low block heel

   Roads close from as early as 4pm, so you walk in from the Metro and stand until midnight. A low block heel is dressy enough for the night and stable enough for seven hours. The T-bar strap keeps the shoe on in a crowd.

   Small black beaded frame clutch

   A crowd this size means a small bag and security checks. A frame clutch holds a phone, a card and a Metro card, and beadwork catches the fireworks. Keep it on a wrist strap or under your arm while you walk.

   Champagne-gold crystal drop earrings

   With sleeves long and hems low, the sparkle moves to your ears. Crystal drops in champagne-gold match the dress and catch the light when you look up at the tower at midnight.

   Cream long-sleeve button-down

   The menswear answer for a covered, dressy evening in public. A long-sleeve cream shirt with dark trousers is smart enough for a hotel party after the fireworks and cool enough at 26°C / 79°F in the afternoon.
