What to Wear to New Year's Eve in Berlin

Packing philosophy

Dress for sparks and freezing. NOAA's figures for Deutscher Wetterdienst's Tempelhof station put Berlin's December at 4.4°C by day and −0.1°C at night, with about 14 wet days. Silvester is a public fireworks night: the Senate allows fireworks to be sold only on 29, 30 and 31 December, and at midnight rockets and bangers go off in every street, courtyard and park. For the Brandenburg Gate, Tagesspiegel, via dpa, quotes a Senate spokesperson: "Angedacht ist erneut eine Party mit kostenlosem Eintritt, Feuerwerk und DJs". That is a plan, not yet a programme. So the capsule is wool and leather, which char rather than melt. A charcoal overcoat, a wine merino crew, a wool beanie, leather mittens and lug boots for pavements full of spent casings.

What the dress code actually is

No dress code applies at the Brandenburg Gate or in the street, but Silvester has a safety logic that decides the outfit. Fireworks are set off by private people all over the city, so what you wear should not melt or catch. Wool and leather char where nylon, polyester fleece and acrylic melt and stick. Cover your hair with a wool hat and keep loose, flammable ends out of the way. The Brandenburg Gate party, when it runs, has had entry checks in past years; the Senate's planning is reported by Tagesspiegel, and the 2026 details follow in December. Berliners dress for Silvester the way they dress all winter: dark, practical and warm, with the party in the flat afterwards.

   At midnight Berlin's streets fill with sparks. Wool chars where a nylon puffer melts, and a spark that lands on a wool coat leaves a mark rather than a hole. Below the knee, it covers your legs at 0°C / 32°F, and charcoal hides soot.

   Wine fine merino crew-neck sweater

   Warm under the coat and fine enough to wear alone in a heated flat after midnight. Merino is wool, so it behaves under sparks the way the coat does. Wine brings one colour into a charcoal night.

   Heavy cotton denim does not melt and shrugs off ash and grit. Black straight jeans are what Berliners wear out on Silvester, and they take thermal leggings underneath for a night near 0°C.

   After midnight Berlin's pavements are covered in spent casings, cardboard and glass, and there are about 14 wet December days. A thick lug sole walks over all of it. Laced leather stays on your feet in a crowd, and nothing falls in the top.

   Heather-grey cuffed wool rib beanie

   Your hair is the first thing a spark finds. A dense wool beanie covers it and keeps the heat in at 0°C. A cuff doubles the wool over your ears.

   Charcoal leather mittens, shearling lining, rib cuffs

   Leather does not catch or melt, and a shearling lining keeps your hands warm through hours outside. Mittens come off in one move when you want to light a sparkler or hold a phone.

   Long charcoal brushed-wool scarf

   Wool again, for the same reason as the coat, and long enough to wind twice and tuck into the collar. Tucked in, the ends stay away from sparks and out of reach of a crowd.

   Keys, phone and a card in a bag that sits in front of you under the coat, where no spark reaches it. Leather does not melt. Burgundy matches the wine knit.
