What to Wear to New Year's Eve in Las Vegas

Packing philosophy

Dress for the party, then for the desert. On New Year's Eve Clark County closes the Strip to cars and turns it into a street party: for the last edition it was closed by 8pm, bags were limited to 12 × 12 × 6 inches, and glass and coolers were banned. Fireworks go off over the Strip at midnight. NOAA's figures for Harry Reid International make December the coldest month of the year, at 13.8°C by day and 4.2°C before dawn, and the desert loses its heat fast after sunset at about 4:30pm. So the capsule is gold sequins with a black leather jacket over them, opaque tights, low block heels for the walk between resorts, and a clutch small enough for the limit.

What the dress code actually is

The Strip itself has no dress code, only Clark County's rules for the night: a bag no bigger than 12 × 12 × 6 inches, no glass, no coolers, and security at the entry points once the road closes. Club and ticketed resort parties set their own dress codes, and many turn away athletic wear, flip-flops and caps, so check the booking. Las Vegas is the one city where a sequin dress and a velvet blazer are the expected clothes on the street as well as inside, and nobody will think you overdressed.
