TL;DR

Philadelphia in December: 8°C / 46°F days, 0°C / 32°F nights, and evenings spent standing at an outdoor counter.

Do
  • Oxblood wool coat to below the knee — the village stays open until 8pm Sunday to Thursday and 9pm on Friday and Saturday, and you spend it on your feet
  • Heather-grey wool crew — the layer that has to look finished when the coat comes off at Reading Terminal Market
  • Navy wool trousers, full length — the hem stays over the boot while you stand at a counter
  • Dark brown lined waterproof boots — rain or snow on about 11 December days, and the village opens rain or shine
  • Cream scarf and navy leather-palm gloves — a hot mug in one hand, your money in the other, in an open plaza
  • Small grey crossbody worn in front — for cash, because not every vendor takes cards and there is no ATM on site
Don't
  • Christmas Day at the village — it is closed on 25 December, and on Christmas Eve it shuts at 5pm
  • Canvas sneakers — they soak through on a wet evening, and the village does not close for ordinary rain
  • RiverRink on a whim — skating tickets are limited, and the waterfront corporation recommends booking
  • A large backpack on a weekend evening — the village says weekends get pretty crowded, and a pack sits where you cannot watch it

Dress for standing still. NOAA NCEI's normals for Philadelphia International put December at 7.8°C / 46°F by day and −0.4°C at night, with rain or snow on 11 days, and the month cools as it goes: the normal high slides from about 10°C on the 1st to about 6°C on the 31st. Christmas Village is plain about this year's change: "For the 2026 season, vendor booths will operate with counter-service access rather than walk-in entry." So you shop outside until 8pm, or 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and NOAA's hourly normals put 8pm near 4°C. Pack a long coat, a lined boot and gloves that hold a mug.

This season every booth at Christmas Village serves from a counter. You shop outside, on your feet, until 8pm or 9pm, so dress for standing still, not for the walk there.

The capsule

  1. oxblood long wool coat
    01
Oxblood wool coat, single-breasted, below the knee

Christmas Village serves every 2026 booth from a counter, so an evening there is spent standing in one spot until 8pm Sunday to Thursday and 9pm on Friday and Saturday. A coat that reaches below the knee keeps your thighs covered while you wait your turn. Oxblood hides a drip of Glühwein and reads warm under the Christmas Pyramid's 3,000 lights.

  2. heather-grey raglan wool crew-neck sweater
    02
    Heather-grey wool crew

This is what people see when the coat comes off. Reading Terminal Market, open since 22 February 1893, sits a few blocks east along Arch Street and makes the indoor lunch between two outdoor stands, so the layer under the coat has to look finished alone. Wool keeps its warmth back at the counters, and heather grey sits between oxblood and navy.

  3. navy straight wool trousers
    03
Navy wool trousers, straight leg, full length

Standing at a market counter, the gap that opens is between hem and boot. A full-length straight leg falls over the shaft and stays there. Wool holds warmth on a night that falls to 0°C / 32°F; navy matches the gloves and hides splashes from wet paving.

  4. dark leather shearling-lined lug boots
    04
Dark brown waterproof leather ankle boots, fleece lined, lug sole

NOAA NCEI counts rain or snow on 11 December days, and Christmas Village calls itself "a rain or shine event" that stays open in most weather. You stand on wet paving for an hour at a time, so the sole and lining matter more than the shaft. Waterproof leather keeps the wet out, fleece keeps the heat in, and dark brown sits under oxblood.

  5. narrow cream wool scarf with fringe
    05
    Cream wool scarf, narrow

LOVE Park is an open plaza, and the National Weather Service tells you to "seek shelter from the wind as much as possible while outside". NOAA's hourly normals put the airport at about 4°C at 8pm, with a wind chill near 1°C. A narrow wool scarf closes the coat's collar at the stalls and comes off in one pull indoors. Cream lifts the oxblood.

  6. navy leather-palm knit gloves
    06
    Navy knit gloves, leather palms

At Christmas Village "Glühwein is served exclusively in those mugs", the village's own, which you keep, so one hand holds a hot mug while the other pays. Knit gloves with leather palms grip both and stay on while you do it. Save mittens for a longer stand; at a market your fingers have work to do.

  7. grey half-moon zip crossbody
    07
Small heather-grey leather crossbody, zip top

Bring cash. Christmas Village says most vendors, but not all, accept credit cards, and that there is no ATM inside the market; the nearest are at banks around LOVE Park. A zipped crossbody worn in front keeps notes, a card and a phone where you can see them, in a crowd the village itself describes as "pretty crowded on weekend days". Heather grey matches the crew and stays quiet against the oxblood coat.

  8. navy ribbed wool socks
    08
Thick navy wool socks, two pairs

A lined boot is only as warm as the sock inside it, and wool stays warm when damp. The National Weather Service adds that once back inside you should change into dry clothing immediately if you are wet. Keep the second pair rolled in a coat pocket for the evening the village stays open through rain, which by its own policy it does.

Day to night

Morning

Heather crew · navy trousers · brown lined boots · coat open while the afternoon holds near 8°C / 46°F. Lunch indoors at Reading Terminal Market, then the village from its noon opening while it is light. Pick a weekday if you can: the village says weekends get pretty crowded.

Evening

Coat buttoned · cream scarf · gloves on · cash in the crossbody. Sunset is close to 4:40pm and the stalls run to 8pm Sunday to Thursday, 9pm Friday and Saturday. Then the Market-Frankford Line to 2nd Street and a short walk to RiverRink: free to enter, $5 to skate, $12 for skates, fire pits by reservation.

A suggested look — oxblood wool coat, heather-grey wool crew, cream wool scarf, navy wool trousers, dark brown lined leather ankle boots.

What to avoid

  • Christmas Day at the village — closed on 25 December
  • Canvas sneakers — rain or snow on about 11 days, and you stand
  • Cards only — no ATM inside the village
  • RiverRink skating without a booking — tickets are limited
  • A large backpack on a weekend evening — the busiest time at the stalls

Frequently asked questions

Cold, often wet, and colder at the end of the month than at the start. NOAA NCEI's climate normals for Philadelphia International give a December high of 7.8°C / 46°F and a low of −0.4°C, 3.97 inches of precipitation on 11 days, 3.5 inches of snow and about 17 nights at or below freezing. The daily normals fall through the month, from a high near 10°C and a low near 1°C on 1 December to about 6°C and −2°C on the 31st. The low comes near dawn; NOAA's hourly normals put 8pm at about 4°C. Sunset stays close to 4:40pm, from 4:36pm on the 1st to 4:45pm on the 31st.

A below-knee oxblood wool coat, a heather-grey wool crew, full-length navy wool trousers, dark brown lined waterproof boots, two pairs of thick wool socks, a cream wool scarf, navy leather-palm gloves and a small grey crossbody worn in front, with some cash in it. That covers an 8°C / 46°F afternoon and an evening on your feet at an outdoor counter. Leave canvas sneakers and a large backpack at home.

21 November to 27 December 2026, at LOVE Park and City Hall, 1500 Arch Street. It opens noon to 8pm Sunday to Thursday and noon to 9pm Friday and Saturday; on Christmas Eve it closes at 5pm, and it is closed on Christmas Day. Admission is free, and the German-style market has more than 120 vendors. New for 2026, booths serve from a counter instead of letting you walk in, a change the village says gives a more equal experience across the market. It closes early on heavy rain or snow days and posts the change on its website and social channels.

Early December is milder: the normal high on the 1st is about 4°C warmer than on the 31st, and the village is open every day from the 1st to the 24th. Late December brings Christmas Eve's 5pm close, the closed 25th and the village's last day on Sunday 27 December. After that the outdoor season moves to the river. RiverRink runs to 28 February, and in 2025 the New Year's Eve fireworks over the Delaware went off at 6pm and at midnight, free and rain or shine. The 2026 times are not published yet.

January is colder and snowier, and its reason to visit is a single day. NOAA gives December 7.8°C / 46°F by day and −0.4°C at night, with 3.5 inches of snow and about 17 freezing nights; January drops to 5.2°C / 41°F and −3.3°C, with 7.1 inches of snow and about 23. December's outdoor hours are spread over a month of market evenings and rink nights, so this guide is built on a long wool coat and gloves your fingers can work in. Our January guide is built around the Mummers Parade on New Year's Day, a whole day on a Broad Street curb, and swaps in a knee-length down parka and mittens.

Dark wool coats, knitwear and boots, cut for a city you cross on foot. Philadelphia's tailoring house is Boyds: the Gushner brothers, Alexander, Albert and Ben, founded it in 1938 as "a humble men’s clothing store on 1217 Market Street", moved it to 1818 Chestnut Street in 1990, and added designer women's ready-to-wear in 1993. The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds Grace Kelly's 1956 wedding headpiece, made, the museum says, from the antique Brussels lace called rose point that was used on the dress bodice.
