What to Wear in Asheville in November

Pack for the evenings. NOAA's figures for Asheville Regional Airport put November at 15.3°C by afternoon and 36.1°F (2.3°C) at night, with 94mm of rain over about 9 days, and the month slides as it goes: the National Weather Service's day-by-day figures start at 64°F and 40°F on 1 November and finish at 55°F and 33°F on the 30th. Meanwhile Christmas at Biltmore opens on 3 November with its Candlelight evenings, and from the 13th Winter Lights runs over a million lights along a one-mile trail at the North Carolina Arboretum. The clocks went back on the 1st, so by mid-month sunset is about 5:25pm and both evening events happen in the dark. Wear waxed cotton over a knit, a skirt for the house, boots for the trail.

   On 1 November the NWS puts the afternoon at 64°F, which is too warm for waxed cotton and, on about 9 days of the month, wet enough to want a hood. Pull the olive shell over the cardigan for a morning at the Mount Pisgah overlook, then fold it into the crossbody when the sun comes out. It is your coat for the first fortnight; the barn coat takes over after that.

   Button it over the striped shirt and it does two jobs: the whole top half on a 15°C / 59°F afternoon, and the warm layer under the barn coat once the night drops toward 36°F. Cropped matters here, because it stops at the waistband of the suede skirt instead of bunching under the coat. Pale sage is the one cool colour against camel, rust and chestnut.

   Navy fine-stripe cotton button-down

   A collar out over the sage knit is what makes the cardigan an evening outfit, and Biltmore publishes no dress code for Candlelight, so that collar is as formal as you need to be. Fine navy stripes read as plain from a few feet away and hold up beside rust suede. By day, tuck it into the olive trousers for the Folk Art Center at milepost 382.

   Olive straight-leg utility trousers

   Two uses: a day on the open stretch of the Parkway, which as of late September runs from Mount Mitchell south past Mount Pisgah at milepost 408, and the Winter Lights trail at night. The National Park Service says snow is possible on the high ground by November, and a straight leg keeps wind off your shins while sitting clean over the boots. Olive matches the shell, so the day look is one colour.

   Rust suede midi skirt, button front, high-low hem

   Keep it for your Candlelight evening, which Biltmore runs every night from 3 November except the 17th and the 26th. A midi length covers your knees on a 36°F night, the high-low hem clears the boot at the front, and rust suede beside chestnut leather reads as one colour story. Pick a dry night for it: the month has about 9 wet ones, and suede spots.

   Chestnut leather Chelsea ankle boots

   Winter Lights opens on 13 November: a mile of trail at the North Carolina Arboretum, walked after dark with the valley heading for 36°F. Chelsea boots slide on under trousers or a midi skirt with no laces to work in gloves, and smooth chestnut leather wipes clean after a wet path. One pair covers the Parkway overlook, the trail and the Candlelight evening.

   Wear it across the body, under the open barn coat, so both hands stay free after dark on the Winter Lights trail. A buckled saddle flap stays shut while you are looking up at the lights, and the bag takes gloves, a phone and keys. Tan is the lightest brown in a capsule of camel, rust and chestnut, which makes it the piece that joins them.
