What to Wear in Las Vegas in October

In October the weather changes at the door. NOAA's figures for Harry Reid International put the month at 27°C / 81°F in the afternoon and 15°C / 59°F at dawn, with about 8mm of rain across roughly 2 days, which makes this the desert's most comfortable month outdoors. The gap is the problem. The air falls about 12°C from high to low, sunset slides from nearly half past six on 1 October to about a quarter to six on the 31st, and half of any day runs indoors, in air-conditioned casinos and arenas. Red Rock Canyon's Scenic Drive goes back to timed entry on 1 October, and XS at Wynn bans sandals outright. So: leather for the night, a cardigan for inside, shoes that pass a club door.

Cropped sits on the high waist of the pleated trousers without a tuck, so it stays neat after a day on foot.

   XS at Wynn asks for business casual, and pressed black pleated trousers meet it with either pair of shoes in this capsule. A wide leg lets air through on a 27°C / 81°F afternoon, falls cleanly over canvas sneakers at Fashion Show Las Vegas, and covers your ankles on the walk back after midnight, when the desert has given up most of its heat.

   Wear it for the night you give to dinner and a club. A dark olive ruched midi with a side slit meets a business-casual door, rolls into a corner of the case, and gives the capsule its one colour besides the red shoe. Thin straps need cover once the sun goes at about six, which is the job the leather jacket was packed for.

   One pair covers Red Rock in the morning and XS at night, because the club allows clean sneakers. The rubber sole grips sandstone on the short walks off the Scenic Drive, and the white canvas wipes clean in the hotel room before dinner. Do wipe them: stained clothing sits on the XS banned list next to work boots.
