What to Wear in Las Vegas in January
Las Vegas in January: 15°C / 59°F afternoons, 5°C / 41°F nights, about 3 rain days, and CES on the show floor from 6 to 9 January 2027.

Dress for the halls first and the walk back second. NOAA's figures for Harry Reid International give January a 14.7°C afternoon and a 4.7°C night, with rain on about 3 days and about 3 nights at or below freezing. That is mild, dry weather, and for four days it barely matters. CES runs from 6 to 9 January 2027, and its organiser, the Consumer Technology Association, sets the terms: a campus spread across several venues, indoor venues that are "typically cool", two small bags per person and a request to leave bulky clothing at your hotel. So build the capsule from thin layers that stay on all day: a wool overshirt over merino, quick-dry trousers and cushioned runners. The show floor closes at 6pm, well after a 4:40pm sunset, so the scarf rides in the bag until then.
In CES week the forecast is the least of it. What you wear is set by a cool hall, a two-bag rule and the walk between two convention centres.
The capsule
01Light grey unlined wool overshirt, patch pocketsWear it from the hotel lobby to the last booth. CES warns that its indoor venues are typically cool, and an unlined wool overshirt holds heat in an air-conditioned hall without the bulk the organisers ask you to leave at the hotel. At 14.7°C outdoors it is the only layer you need in daylight, and the patch pockets take a phone and a charger.
02Cobalt fine-gauge merino crewMerino, because a fine knit stays warm under cold air vents and does not hold odour after a day of demos. Cobalt, because everything else here is grey, white, navy and black, and one clear colour keeps four days of the same trousers from reading as a uniform. It goes under the overshirt by day and under the black blazer at dinner.
03White cotton button-down, chest pocketBusiness casual is the default on the show floor, and a white button-down handles a keynote, a booth meeting and a steakhouse without a change. Wear it under the cobalt crew with the collar out, or alone with the sleeves rolled when a crowded hall runs warm. The chest pocket holds business cards when the bag is full.
04Dark navy slim quick-dry trousersOne pair, four days. Quick-dry fabric survives a spilled coffee and a hotel-sink rinse overnight, the slim tapered leg stays clear of escalator steps and shuttle doors, and dark navy hides a day of sitting wherever a seat appears. With the blazer over the cobalt crew they pass for dinner trousers without a change.
05Black mesh running shoes, thick soleChoose the shoes before the outfit. The organisers' first-time guide says "comfortable shoes are a must" because the campus spans several venues, and the Tech Express shuttle only covers the hop between the Convention Center and the Venetian Expo. A black mesh runner with a thick sole takes the floor mileage, breathes in a warm hall and looks plain enough beside the blazer at night.
06Black top-handle mini bagCES lets you carry two small bags, each smaller than 12 x 17 x 6 inches, and searches every one at the door. A black leather mini bag with a front pocket clears that with room to spare and carries a phone, a charger and cards. The top handle means it hangs from a wrist in a crowded aisle and still takes a crossbody strap for the walk between halls.
07Black single-button blazerDinner in CES week is often a working meal, and the organisers tell you to book shows and restaurants early because the city gets busy during the show. A black single-button blazer over the cobalt crew turns the day's trousers into a dinner outfit in the time it takes to change bags. It is also the second layer for a 4.7°C walk back along the Strip.
08Charcoal fringed wool scarfSave it for after six. Exhibits close at 6pm from Wednesday to Friday, sunset on 6 January comes at about 4:40pm, and NOAA counts about 3 January nights a year at or below freezing. A charcoal fringed scarf rolls small enough to ride in the bag all day, and wound twice it covers the monorail platform and the walk to dinner.

About 3 nights a month fall to freezing or below, and roughly half of January's afternoons reach 60°F. Daylight grows from 9h 44m on the 1st to 10h 23m on the 31st, with sunset moving from about 4:35pm to 5:05pm.

Late January, unless CES is why you are going. The show fills the city from 6 to 9 January 2027, complimentary hotel shuttles run from Tuesday 5 January to Saturday 9 January, and the organisers themselves warn that hotels fill up quickly and that Vegas gets busy during CES. After the 9th the halls empty and the light starts to return: sunset moves from about 4:40pm on 6 January to about 5:05pm by the 31st, and daylight passes ten hours around mid-month. The temperature barely moves across the month, so the capsule works for either half.
January is about a degree warmer by day and by night. NOAA's figures give it 15°C / 59°F and 5°C / 41°F, against December's 14°C / 57°F and 4°C / 39°F, which leaves December as the coldest month of the year. Rain is almost identical, 0.56 inches on 3.1 days against 0.45 inches on 3.0, and December's average 0.2 inches of snow falls to zero. The real change is the calendar. In the first full week, the city dresses like its biggest trade show. CES opened in New York in June 1967 under Jack Wayman and has called Las Vegas home since the January 1978 Winter CES, so layers, a lanyard and comfortable shoes are as local to January here as rodeo boots are to December. The shoes have a local address too: Zappos, founded in 1999, runs its downtown headquarters from the renovated 1973 Las Vegas City Hall. For the showier register, the Westgate, on the Monorail line to the Convention Center, keeps a bronze statue of Elvis, who played 636 sold-out shows there from 31 July 1969.
