What to Wear in Mumbai

India

Mumbai runs Indian climate extremes — May is pre-monsoon at 34°C / 93°F, June through September is the southwest monsoon (Mumbai gets some of the heaviest urban rainfall in the world: 506mm in June, 768mm in July, 472mm in August). The dressing rule: lightweight cotton or rayon, modest cuts (mid-thigh and above is uncommon outside resort areas), waterproof footwear in monsoon, compact umbrella always. Religious sites (Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali, ISKCON Temple) enforce shoulder/knee modesty rules. The Indian style register has shifted contemporary in Bandra and Lower Parel; traditional sarees, kurtas, and salwar kameez are widely worn for any cultural or religious context.
