What to Wear in Philadelphia in January
Philadelphia in January: 5°C / 41°F days, −3°C / 27°F nights, and New Year's Day spent standing on Broad Street.
- Forest-green down parka to the knee — the 2026 parade ran from 9am to about 7pm, and you watch it standing
- Cream fleece crew — a second warm layer for a parade morning that starts near freezing
- Navy thermal leggings under charcoal wool trousers — two layers on the legs for a day on a curb
- Navy insulated waterproof boots — 7.1 inches of snow in a normal January, with about 5 days of an inch or more on the ground
- Gold wool beanie and navy mittens — the National Weather Service says to wear a warm hat and that mittens are better than gloves
- Small navy belt bag worn in front — the City's 2026 notice said no bag should be left unattended
- A hip-length jacket — ten hours on a curb, and it leaves your thighs out on a morning near 0°C
- Arriving at 9am for a front spot — in 2026 Visit Philadelphia warned that many arrive very early
- Driving in on parade day — in 2026 Broad Street closed to traffic from 7am and the City pointed spectators to SEPTA
- Smooth soles after a snowfall — they slip on packed snow at the crossings on the way to the route
Dress for a whole day on one spot. NOAA NCEI's normals make January Philadelphia's coldest month, 5.2°C / 41°F by day and −3.3°C at night, with 7.1 inches of snow and about 23 nights at or below freezing. On New Year's Day that means the Mummers Parade, which Visit Philadelphia calls "the nation’s oldest continuously operating folk parade, originating in 1901". In 2026 it started at 9am at City Hall and ended around 7pm, and NOAA's hourly normals run from about 0°C at 9am to about 4°C mid-afternoon. The City's 2026 notice was plain: "It is recommended that attendees wear comfortable, weather-appropriate attire."
The Mummers Parade is a working day of standing. In 2026 it ran from 9am to about 7pm, from a morning near freezing into the dark, so dress for the curb, not for the walk to it.
The capsule
01Forest-green down parka, knee length, hoodedA parade day is about ten hours on one patch of pavement: for 2026 Visit Philadelphia gave a 9am start at City Hall and a finish around 7pm. Down to the knee covers the thighs a hip-length jacket leaves out, and the hood goes up after the 4:46pm sunset. Forest green is easy to spot when your group splits up along a 1.5-mile route.
02Cream fleece crewNOAA's hourly normals put the airport near 0°C at 9am in January and only about 4°C at the warmest hour, so the layer under the parka has to hold heat while you stand still. Fleece does that and dries quickly after snow. Cream shows at the neck against forest green and looks clean when the parka comes off at the Convention Center.
03Navy thermal leggingsWorn under the trousers and never seen. The National Weather Service tells anyone out in serious cold to "dress in layers", and the legs are what a parka leaves out below the knee. Fleece-backed leggings add that second layer without bulk, so the trousers still fall straight over the boots. Navy matches the boots, so a glimpse at the ankle reads as one line.
04Navy insulated waterproof boots, calf height, lug soleA normal January brings 7.1 inches of snow, second only to February's 8.4, and NOAA counts about 5 days with an inch or more lying on the ground. Insulation is what counts when you stand on cold pavement for hours, and a lug holds packed snow at a crossing. Calf height clears a curbside pile of plowed snow without the weight of a pac boot.
05Charcoal wool trousers, straight, roomy legCut with room for the leggings underneath, so the hem still falls over the boot when you sit down. For the 2026 parade Visit Philadelphia added: "Lawn chairs are permitted." Wool keeps its warmth if the cloth gets damp in snow. Charcoal hides a wet hem and leaves the forest-green parka and the gold beanie as the colours that stand out on Broad Street.
06Mustard-gold ribbed wool beanieA beanie stays on all day, so the parka hood can stay down while the string bands play and come up after dark. Gold nods to "Oh, Dem Golden Slippers", which Visit Philadelphia calls the unofficial Mummers anthem, and it is easy to find in a crowd.
07Navy insulated mittens, leather palmsFive words from the National Weather Service settle it: "Mittens are better than gloves." On a parade day your hands have little to do for hours except hold a coffee and clap, which is exactly when mittens beat gloves. Insulated ones with a leather palm still grip a cup and the handrail on the SEPTA stairs. Navy matches the boots and leggings.
08Small navy belt bag, worn across the frontNothing goes on the ground. The City's notice for the 2026 parade was direct: "No bags or items should be left unattended." A belt bag worn across the front of the parka stays on your body all day and holds a phone, a card and a transit fare. Parade tickets in 2026 were pre-printed physical tickets, not digital, and they fit in its zip pocket.
Day to night
Leggings · charcoal trousers · cream fleece · parka zipped · gold beanie · mittens · insulated boots · belt bag in front. In 2026 the City encouraged spectators to use SEPTA's Broad Street and Market-Frankford lines, the parade started at 9am, and the String Bands set up on Market Street and JFK Boulevard from about 11am.
Same kit, hood up after the 4:46pm sunset. The 2026 parade ended around 7pm, and by then NOAA's hourly normals sit near 2°C. For a seat indoors, the 2026 Fancy Brigade Finale ran at 11:30am and 5pm at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, ticketed at $43 and $28.
A suggested look — forest-green knee-length down parka, cream fleece crew, mustard-gold ribbed beanie, charcoal wool trousers, navy insulated boots.

Frequently asked questions
The coldest month of the year, and the second snowiest after February. NOAA NCEI's climate normals for Philadelphia International give a January high of 5.2°C / 41°F and a low of −3.3°C, 3.13 inches of precipitation on 11 days, 7.1 inches of snow against February's 8.4, and about 23 nights at or below freezing. An inch or more of new snow falls on about a day and a half, and snow an inch deep lies on the ground on about 5 days. The low comes near dawn; by 7pm NOAA's hourly normals sit near 2°C. Sunset moves from 4:46pm on 1 January to 5:18pm on the 31st.
A knee-length forest-green down parka, a cream fleece crew, navy thermal leggings, charcoal wool trousers with room for them, navy insulated waterproof boots, a mustard-gold wool beanie, navy insulated mittens and a small navy belt bag worn in front. That covers a 5°C / 41°F afternoon and a parade day that starts near freezing. Under the parka, the fleece doubles as what you wear in a heated restaurant, so you need no separate indoor outfit.
On New Year's Day, Friday 1 January 2027. The time and route are not published yet; the Independence Visitor Center says "2027 Mummers Parade tickets will go on sale in November." For the 2026 parade, Visit Philadelphia gave a 9am start at City Hall, a loop around the building, then south on Broad Street to Washington Avenue, about 1.5 miles, ending around 7pm. Watching was free anywhere on the route, with stop-and-perform spots at Sansom, Pine and Carpenter streets, and bleacher seats by the judging stand at Dilworth Park cost $25. The City's 2026 notice asked spectators to wear "comfortable, weather-appropriate attire" and to leave no bag unattended.
Early January if the parade is the reason: it fills 1 January, and in 2026 its parking restrictions and road closures in Center City began days before. The rest of the month is the same cold without the crowd, with about 23 freezing nights and sunset moving from 4:46pm to 5:18pm. Late January suits a restaurant trip: in 2026 Center City District Restaurant Week ran 18 to 31 January, with three-course dinners at $45 or $60, and the 2027 dates are not posted yet. RiverRink on the Delaware stays open all month, through 28 February.
Colder by about 3°C at night and twice as snowy. NOAA's January normals are 5.2°C / 41°F and −3.3°C with 7.1 inches of snow, against December's 7.8°C / 46°F and −0.4°C with 3.5 inches. December's outdoor time is spread over market evenings, so our December guide is built on a long oxblood wool coat and leather-palm gloves for holding a mug. January's centre is one long day on Broad Street, so this guide swaps in a knee-length down parka, a second leg layer and mittens.
It depends which side of the barrier you stand on. The marchers belong to more than 40 clubs, and Visit Philadelphia describes the Fancies in "painted faces, glamorous sequined outfits, feathery plumage and colorful parasols". On the curb, dress for the day outside: a long parka, a hat and boots with a tread. The city's everyday style comes from its own retailers: Urban Outfitters began in 1970 as a shop called Free People across the street from the University of Pennsylvania, opened by Dick Hayne, Scott Belair and Judy Wicks, and its sister Anthropologie opened its first store in 1992 in a refurbished automobile shop in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
