TL;DR

Sydney in October: 23°C / 73°F afternoons, 15°C / 59°F mornings, about 9 rain days, and an extra hour of evening from 4 October.

Do
  • Navy coach jacket — 15°C / 59°F on the 8am ferry and a steady afternoon breeze on the cliffs
  • White knit with a green collar — the 7pm layer, now that daylight saving keeps you outdoors
  • Pale blue linen shirt — Cancer Institute NSW rates UV high from August to May
  • Woven wide-brim hat — shades ears and neck, which a cap leaves bare
  • Cream canvas sneakers — two kilometres of sandstone steps between Bondi and Tamarama
  • White cotton midi dress — a weekday at Sculpture by the Sea, 16 October to 2 November
Don't
  • A winter coat — 23°C / 73°F by lunch turns it into luggage
  • A cap as your only sun cover — ears and neck burn on a clifftop walk
  • Heels or thin sandals on the coastal walk — sandstone steps and sand
  • Leaving the jacket behind after 4 October — sunset moves past seven and the breeze stays

Pack for the hour after work. NOAA's figures for Observatory Hill put Sydney's October at 23°C / 73°F by day and 14.6°C at dawn, with 68mm of rain over about 9 days, and the Bureau of Meteorology's long record at the same station logs a 19 km/h breeze at 3pm. Those numbers barely move across the month. The clock does. On 4 October daylight saving shifts sunset from about 6pm to about 7pm, and by the 31st it is past 7:20. From the 16th, Sculpture by the Sea puts around 100 works along the two-kilometre clifftop path from Bondi to Tamarama. So you are outdoors later, higher up and in wind: a jacket that stops it, a knit under it, linen for midday, and a hat that covers your neck.

Daylight saving does not make Sydney warmer. It keeps you out an hour longer, on a clifftop, in a sea breeze, after the sun has stopped doing the work.

The capsule

  1. Dark Navy Coach Jacket
    01
Navy coach jacket, check flannel lining

Mornings sit at 15°C / 59°F and the harbour ferry is colder than the street. A navy coach jacket with a check flannel lining stops the afternoon breeze on the Bondi cliffs without the weight of a coat, and it goes over an arm by eleven. Navy because everything else here is white, olive and pale blue, and navy is what holds them together.

  2. White Colour-Block Knit Sweater
    02
White crew knit, green collar and red cuffs

After 4 October you need an evening layer every night: sunset moves past seven, and a drink in Watsons Bay runs an hour later than it did in September. A white knit with a green rib collar and red cuffs gives the navy jacket something to frame, and a mid-weight cotton knit is all a harbour table in the high teens asks for.

  3. Pale Blue Oversized Linen Shirt
    03
    Pale blue oversized linen shirt

From eleven to four the day is 23°C / 73°F, and the sun is a bigger problem than the heat: Cancer Institute NSW rates UV in New South Wales as high from August to May. Roll the sleeves at breakfast and bring them down by noon. Oversized linen covers your forearms without trapping heat, and it works open over the white dress.

  4. White Midi Dress With Green Trim
    04
White cotton midi dress, green block-print hem

Wear it on the weekday you give to Sculpture by the Sea, 16 October to 2 November, when the path is calmer than the weekends Destination NSW warns are very busy. A white cotton midi covers your knees in a clifftop gust, moves on the stairs, and the green hem picks up the collar of the knit.

  5. Olive Wide-Leg Trousers
    05
    Olive wide-leg cotton trousers

One pair for the 8am ferry and a Surry Hills table at 8pm. A wide leg lets air through at 23°C, soft cotton drill keeps its shape after a day of walking, and olive sits between the navy jacket and the green trim on the dress, so every top in this capsule goes with them.

  6. Cream Canvas Sneakers
    06
Cream canvas sneakers, flat rubber sole

Two kilometres of coastal path from Bondi to Tamarama means sandstone steps, handrails and patches of sand, and a heel or a thin sandal is the wrong tool. Plain cream canvas with a flat rubber sole grips the steps, rinses clean after the beach, and still looks right at a Bronte café at noon.

  7. Straw Sun Hat
    07
Natural straw wide-brim hat, violet ribbon

Pack a brim, not a cap. A woven brim that goes all the way round shades your ears and the back of your neck, which is where October sun lands on a coastal walk with the sun behind you. It weighs almost nothing and rides flat in the tote between Bondi and the ferry.

  8. Brown Structured Tote
    08
    Brown suede bucket tote

One bag for the whole day: it takes the knit at noon, the hat at 6pm and a paperback for the ferry. Suede stays matte in hard spring light, and brown is the only warm colour in a capsule of navy, white, olive and pale blue, which is why it earns the slot.

Day to night

Morning

Navy coach jacket over the pale blue linen shirt · olive wide-leg trousers · cream canvas sneakers · wide-brim hat · brown suede tote. Manly ferry at eight, the Bondi to Tamarama sculptures at ten on a weekday, lunch in Bronte at one.

Evening

White midi dress · white knit with the green collar over the shoulders · navy jacket · cream sneakers. A drink in Watsons Bay after seven once the clocks have changed, dinner in Paddington, the ferry back with the collar up.

A suggested look — Dark navy relaxed zip-up coach jacket, Cream knit pullover with green ribbed collar and burgundy cuffs, Forest green flat-front slim-straight chino trousers, White chunky dad sneakers with mixed panelling.

Frequently asked questions

NOAA NCEI's figures for Sydney Observatory Hill, a station the Bureau of Meteorology operates, give an average October high of 23.3°C and a low of 14.6°C, with about 68mm of rain across 9 days of measurable rain. Only about 5 of those days bring more than 2.5mm, so most wet days are short showers. The Bureau's longer record at the same station shows a 3pm wind near 19 km/h and around 7 hours of sun a day. Daylight grows from about 12h 25m on 1 October to 13h 25m by the 31st.

A navy lined coach jacket, a mid-weight white knit, a pale blue linen shirt, a white cotton midi dress, olive wide-leg trousers, cream canvas sneakers, a woven wide-brim hat and a brown suede tote. That covers a 15°C ferry at 8am, a 23°C clifftop at 2pm and a breezy harbour table at 8pm. Leave the wool coat, the heels and the full-size umbrella at home. Add swimwear if you plan to swim between the flags: Surf Life Saving NSW started the 2026–27 patrol season on 26 September.

Sculpture by the Sea runs from 16 October to 2 November 2026 along the two-kilometre coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama, with around 100 works and free entry. Wear flat shoes with grip, because the path is sandstone steps, handrails and sand, and bring a layer, because the cliffs catch the afternoon breeze. A wide-brim hat beats a cap for sun on your neck. Destination NSW suggests a weekday, since weekends are very busy, and a tote is easier than a backpack in the crowd.

Late October, for most visitors. The clocks go forward at 2am on Sunday 4 October, so from the first weekend sunset moves from about 6pm to about 7pm, and by the last week it is past 7:20pm. Sculpture by the Sea opens on 16 October, and Destination NSW says the jacarandas flower through October and November, with McDougall Street in Kirribilli and Lavender Bay among the streets to walk. Early October brings the NRL Grand Final on 4 October and the Labour Day holiday on 5 October, so trains and hotels fill up.

November runs about a degree warmer by day and two warmer at night: NOAA's Observatory Hill figures give 24°C / 75°F and 17°C / 63°F, against October's 23°C / 73°F and 15°C / 59°F. November also brings about two more rain days, more of them as thunderstorms, and the sun gets stronger as summer approaches. In October you still want a jacket at both ends of the day. In November a linen shirt, a hat and a packable storm shell do most of the work, which our November guide covers.

Linen and cotton from Sydney labels, layered for the wind. Venroy began on Bondi Beach in 2010 with a single run of 60 pairs of swim shorts and built its range on linen, and Bassike, founded in 2006 and based on the northern beaches, makes the organic cotton jersey tees that sit under a jacket in Surry Hills. For a spring weekend dress, Zimmermann, which Nicky and Simone Zimmermann started at the Paddington markets in 1991, sets the tone. The common thread is light fabric, one layer for the evening and flat shoes.
