What to Wear in Sydney in January

Pack for the night, and for damp air. NOAA's figures for Observatory Hill give January 27°C / 81°F by day and 20°C / 68°F at dawn, with 91mm of rain over about 10 days. The Bureau of Meteorology's long record at the same station explains why it feels hotter than the number. The dew point, its measure of moisture in the air, sits at 16.6°C at 9am against 14.9°C in December, humidity at 3pm reaches 62%, and the afternoon breeze falls to 17.9 km/h, the lightest since August. Sydney Festival runs from 7 to 25 January 2027, and last year its street party ran into what the Festival called the warm night air. So choose loose linen and cotton that stands off the skin, sandals that stay on, and an umbrella rather than a shell.
