TL;DR

Amsterdam in December: 7°C / 45°F afternoons, 2°C / 36°F nights, about 17 wet days, and Light Festival cruises that begin as the sun goes down.

Do
  • Khaki knee-length waterproof parka — 75 minutes on an open boat at about 2°C / 36°F
  • Charcoal-and-ecru herringbone blanket scarf — the boat's blanket covers your knees, not your neck
  • Antique-gold knit — catches the light art in photos and works for New Year's Eve
  • Black straight jeans — hide the spray from wet bike lanes
  • Charcoal rubber mid-calf boots — 17 wet days, puddled cobbles and wet gangways
  • Stone wool beanie and forest-green knit gloves — ears and fingers on open water
Don't
  • An umbrella — useless on a bike and on a moving boat in the wind
  • Suede shoes — rain on about 17 days on NOAA's Schiphol record
  • Arriving at the pier at the last minute — the festival asks for 15 minutes early
  • Your own fireworks — the national consumer ban starts with this New Year

Dress for the boat, not the street. NOAA's 30-year record for Schiphol puts December at 6.9°C by day and 1.9°C at night, with rain on about 17 days and frost on about 10 nights. On foot that is fine. On the water it is not. The fifteenth Amsterdam Light Festival runs from 26 November to 17 January, its lights come on at 4:30pm every day, and in mid-December the sun sets at about 4:27pm. A cruise along the route takes about 75 minutes, and the festival's own cruise page is plain about the open boats: "there are blankets available to stay warm." So you sit still, after dark, on a canal, for over an hour. Pack a parka that reaches your knees, a scarf big enough to wrap twice, rubber boots for wet gangways, and gloves you can pull off for a photo.

The Light Festival does not start after dark. It starts at dark, at 4:30pm, and the cruise that shows it to you is 75 minutes of sitting still on open water in December.

The capsule

  1. Khaki Waterproof Insulated Parka
    01
Khaki knee-length waterproof parka, wired hood

Seventy-five minutes on an open boat at about 2°C / 36°F is the coldest hour you will spend in Amsterdam this month, and a parka that reaches your knees keeps the wind off the legs a blanket leaves bare. The shell matters as much as the fill: NOAA counts about 17 December days with measurable rain at Schiphol, and canal spray finds the rest. Pull the drawcord at the waist and the hood stays put on the walk back over the bridges.

  2. Antique-gold lurex crew-neck knit
    02
    Antique-gold knit, full sleeves

Wear one thing that answers the light. The festival hangs 20 artworks in, above and alongside the canals, and an antique-gold knit picks them up in every photo from the boat. Under the parka it is a warm second layer; on its own it is enough for a brown café table afterwards, where the heating is on. On New Year's Eve it is the festive piece for the laser show on Museumplein.

  3. Black Full-Length Straight Jeans
    03
    Black full-length straight jeans

Black denim hides the grey spray a wet bike lane throws up a hem, and one pair takes a boat bench, a café chair and a damp saddle in the same evening. A straight leg falls over the boots instead of bunching inside them. On the coldest nights wear thermal leggings underneath: NOAA's Schiphol record has frost on about 10 December nights.

  4. Charcoal rubber mid-calf rain boots, pull tab
    04
Charcoal rubber mid-calf rain boots, pull tab

Rain on about 17 days, a 4.5km walking route and wet boat gangways add up to standing water. Mid-calf rubber keeps the jeans out of it, grips a wet deck better than a leather sole, and wipes clean before dinner. Charcoal rather than black, so the boots read as part of the outfit and not as weather gear.

  5. Forest-green knit gloves, leather fingertips
    05
    Forest-green knit gloves, leather fingertips

Your phone comes out every few minutes on the cruise, and bare fingers on open water at 2°C / 36°F go numb before the second artwork. Knit gloves with leather fingertips grip a wet rail on the gangway and pull off in a second for a photo. Forest green sits quietly against the khaki parka.

  6. Stone ribbed wool beanie, deep cuff
    06
Stone ribbed wool beanie, deep cuff

An umbrella is useless on a bike and on a boat moving into the wind, so the hat does the umbrella's job for your head. A deep-cuffed rib beanie doubles over the ears, stays on under the parka hood, and keeps its shape in drizzle. Stone goes with the khaki and the gold without competing.

  7. Olive ripstop-nylon zip sling
    07
    Olive ripstop-nylon zip sling

Ripstop nylon sheds rain, and a sling worn across the chest stays out of the way on a bike and in the crush at a boarding pier. It holds a phone, a card and the gloves when they come off. On New Year's Eve you will want both hands free and your things zipped shut for the walk home: in recent years GVB has stopped normal trams and metros around 8pm that night.

  8. Charcoal herringbone blanket scarf
    08
    Charcoal-and-ecru herringbone wool blanket scarf

The festival's open boats come with blankets, and a blanket covers your knees, not your neck. A wide herringbone wool scarf wraps twice, closes the parka collar against the wind off the water, and unwinds into a shawl when the boat is covered and heated. Charcoal and ecru work with every other colour in this capsule.

Day to night

Morning

Khaki parka open over the antique-gold knit · black straight jeans · charcoal rubber boots · stone beanie · olive sling. Coffee in De Pijp after sunrise at about 8:45am, Willem de Kooning at the Rijksmuseum (on until 17 January), then the Prinsengracht while there is still light.

Evening

Parka zipped, hood down · herringbone scarf wound twice · forest-green gloves · beanie over the ears. A 5pm open-boat cruise on the Light Festival route with a blanket on your knees, dinner in the Jordaan, and the walking route's last stretch before the lights go off at 11pm.

A suggested look — khaki hooded waterproof parka, charcoal herringbone wool scarf, antique gold knit, stone ribbed beanie, forest green knit gloves.

What to avoid

  • An umbrella — useless on a bike or a boat in the wind
  • Suede and smooth leather soles — about 17 wet days
  • Arriving late at the pier — the festival asks for 15 minutes early
  • A hired bike without lights — required by law after dark, and dark is 4:30pm
  • Your own fireworks — the national consumer ban starts with this New Year

Frequently asked questions

Cold, wet and dark early. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Schiphol, a station KNMI operates, gives an average December high of 6.9°C and a low of 1.9°C, about 82mm of rain on roughly 17 days, and about 10 days with more than 2.5mm. Frost comes on about 10 nights, and on one or two days the temperature stays below freezing all day. NOAA's daily record for the same airport averages about 20 km/h of wind. Daylight shrinks from about 8 hours on 1 December to 7h 41m at the solstice, with sunset close to 4:30pm all month.

A khaki knee-length waterproof parka, an antique-gold knit, black straight jeans, charcoal rubber mid-calf boots, a stone wool beanie, forest-green knit gloves, an olive nylon sling and a wide herringbone wool scarf. That covers a 2°C / 36°F evening on an open canal boat, a wet walk over the bridges and a heated café afterwards. Add thermal leggings if you plan more than one cruise. Leave the umbrella, the suede and anything you would mind getting splashed at home.

Dress for sitting still outdoors after dark. The fifteenth edition runs from Thursday 26 November 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027, with 20 artworks along the canals; the lights are on from 4:30pm to 11pm daily, and until 9pm on 31 December. The art is free to see on the 4.5km walking route. A cruise takes about 75 minutes. Open boats carry blankets; covered boats are heated, and the festival says boats can be partly covered in extreme cold, then adds: "Don't forget to dress accordingly." Wear a hooded waterproof coat, a scarf, a hat, gloves and boots with grip, and be at the pier 15 minutes early.

No. The Dutch government's national consumer fireworks ban takes effect on 1 August 2026 and applies for the first time at the 2026–2027 New Year. Light F1 items such as sparklers and pull-string poppers stay legal; licensed professional shows are allowed. Amsterdam's alternative is Electric Fireworks, a light and laser show on Museumplein from 6:30pm on 31 December to 1am. Plan the trip home on foot: in recent years GVB has run its last ordinary trams and metros around 8pm and started night metros at 1:30am, and the 2026–27 timetable is not out yet.

Late December for the most to do outdoors, early December for quieter boats. The Christmas Village on Museumplein runs from 3 to 27 December, and Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs puts indoor and outdoor ice rinks into RAI Amsterdam from 17 December to 2 January. The Light Festival runs all month. The last week brings the darkest days, with sunset at about 4:30pm, and New Year's Eve, when the lights go off at 9pm and the city gathers for the laser show on Museumplein.

Much the same temperature, a little drier and a little windier in January. NOAA's Schiphol record gives January 6.2°C by day and 1.2°C at night against December's 6.9°C and 1.9°C, about 16 wet days against 17, and a mean wind of about 21 km/h, the highest of the year, against about 20. January gains light quickly: daylight passes nine hours by the 31st. It also has National Tulip Day on Museumplein on Saturday 16 January and the Light Festival's last night on the 17th, which our January guide covers.

Dark denim, a waterproof coat and boots that can take a wet bike pedal. The city's denim habit is old and local: G-Star, born in Amsterdam, has made denim since 1989 and says it introduced untreated, raw denim to fashion, and Jason Denham founded DENHAM the Jeanmaker in the city in 2008. On top goes a hooded rain coat or a parka rather than an umbrella, because the bike is how most of the city gets around, and a knit hat rather than anything with a brim.
