TL;DR

Cartagena in December: 31°C / 88°F days, 25°C / 77°F nights, the last of the rain and ten nights of the Festival del Pastel.

Do
  • Cobalt poplin shirt-dress — side pockets carry cash through ten festival nights, 17–26 December
  • Ochre linen shirt-jacket, worn open — rain still falls on about 3 days, and linen dries overnight
  • Fuchsia cotton-voile midi skirt — moves air in a plaza packed for the Christmas lights
  • Tan woven fisherman sandals — a buckled ankle strap stays on through a wet street
  • Tan half-moon crossbody — a food festival needs both hands free
  • Clear compact umbrella — December still brings 44.7mm, and you keep the view of the lights
Don't
  • Packing as if the rain has stopped — 44.7mm falls in December, after November's 178.3mm
  • Heading for last year's festival site unchecked — the 2026 agenda names no venue yet
  • A tote or a hand-held clutch at the festival — your hands go to food and a drink
  • Saving the Festival del Pastel for the 27th — it closes on 26 December

December in Cartagena happens after dark. IDEAM's normal for Rafael Núñez airport gives a 31.4°C afternoon and a night that falls to 24.8°C / 77°F by dawn, and the sun sets at 5:43pm in mid-month, so the evening is long and warm. The rain is not quite done: 44.7mm on about 3 days, the tail of a wet season that drops 178.3mm in November. The city's culture institute puts the Festival del Pastel Cartagenero on 17–26 December, beside a Christmas market in the Plaza de los Coches and novenas across the city. Pack for plazas at night: a cobalt dress, a fuchsia skirt, one linen layer and a clear umbrella.

December in Cartagena keeps its best hours for after dark: a cobalt dress for the plaza, linen for the shower, and both hands free for the Festival del Pastel.

The capsule

  1. Ochre linen shirt-jacket, worn open
    01
    Ochre linen shirt-jacket, worn open

One layer that takes a shower and still goes out. IDEAM's normal gives December 44.7mm on about 3 days, the tail of November's 178.3mm. Linen worn open over the cobalt dress or the ivory tank lets air through on a night that only falls to 25°C / 77°F by dawn, and dries on a chair overnight. Ochre sits under every colour here.

  2. Cobalt cotton-poplin sleeveless shirt-dress with a tie belt and hip pockets
    02
Cobalt cotton-poplin shirt-dress, sleeveless, tie belt

Your plaza dress. The city's culture institute schedules the Festival del Pastel for 17–26 December; last year's sold 38,023 pasteles from 50 tables, with live music every day. Sleeveless poplin stays crisp from a 31.4°C afternoon into the evening, the tie belt shapes it, and the pockets at both hips take cash and a phone, so the bag stays shut.

  3. Fuchsia cotton-voile midi skirt, gathered
    03

For the nights the city switches on its lights. In 2025 the Super Navidad show lit the Plaza de la Aduana and plazas from Santo Domingo and San Diego to La Trinidad at once. Mayor Dumek Turbay said "Cartagena se viste de luces": the city dresses in lights. Answer in fuchsia. A full voile skirt with the ivory tank moves air through a packed plaza.

  4. Ivory Cotton Tank
    04
    Ivory cotton scoop-neck tank

Under everything. A 31.4°C afternoon on IDEAM's normal wants the least fabric you can wear, and a plain cotton tank goes under the open shirt-jacket by day and into the fuchsia skirt at night. Wide straps hide a bra strap, cotton takes a wash in the hotel sink, and two of them see you through the festival's ten nights from 17 to 26 December.

  5. Cream-white tailored cotton Bermuda shorts with slant pockets
    05
    Cream-white tailored cotton Bermuda shorts

For the walking hours before dark. UNESCO, which inscribed the walled city in 1984, credits Cartagena with "the most extensive fortifications in South America" and divides the old city into San Pedro, San Diego and Getsemaní; a day covers all three on foot. Knee-length tailored cotton takes a 31.4°C afternoon better than trousers and looks finished under the open shirt-jacket.

  6. Tan woven-leather fisherman sandals with a buckled ankle strap
    06
Tan woven-leather fisherman sandals, buckled ankle strap

Woven straps across the foot and a buckle at the ankle: a sandal that stays on through a puddle on one of the month's three rain days, and through a crowd at the festival tables. Tan leather goes under cobalt, fuchsia and cream-white alike, and the stitched low sole takes the walk back through the walled city after a night in the plazas.

  7. Tan leather half-moon crossbody bag with an adjustable buckled strap

A food festival needs both hands. Last year's Festival del Pastel ran at the Plazoleta de la India Catalina with 50 tables and live music every day, and this year's keeps the same dates, 17–26 December. A small half-moon bag worn across the body stays shut and in front of you in a crowd, with room for cash, a phone and a folded receipt.

  8. Clear vinyl compact folding umbrella with a white handle
    08
    Clear vinyl compact umbrella

December keeps a little of the rain: 44.7mm on about 3 days on IDEAM's normal, a fraction of November's 178.3mm but more than none. A compact umbrella folds small enough to carry every evening, and a clear canopy keeps the view when a shower catches you under the Christmas lights. Leave the golf umbrella at home; it blocks a crowded plaza.

Day to night

Morning

Ivory cotton tank · cream-white Bermuda shorts · ochre shirt-jacket, open · tan fisherman sandals · tan crossbody. Sunrise is about 6:12am in mid-December: walk San Pedro, San Diego and Getsemaní in the morning, then go indoors for the 31.4°C afternoon.

Evening

Cobalt poplin shirt-dress · ochre shirt-jacket, open · tan fisherman sandals · tan crossbody · clear umbrella on a wet night. Sunset at 5:43pm, then the Festival del Pastel (17–26 December) or the Christmas market in the Plaza de los Coches, and the walk back through the walled city into a night that falls to 25°C / 77°F by dawn.

A suggested look — cobalt sleeveless poplin shirt-dress with tie belt, ochre linen shirt-jacket, tan woven leather fisherman sandals.

What to avoid

  • Packing as if the rain has stopped: 44.7mm still falls
  • Last year's festival venue, before the 2026 one is named
  • A tote or a hand-held clutch at the Festival del Pastel
  • Leaving the festival until after 26 December, its last day
  • A Rosario Islands boat without the park's accident insurance

Frequently asked questions

Hot by day, warm all night and still a little wet. IDEAM's normal for Rafael Núñez International Airport gives December an average high of 31.4°C and a low of 24.8°C / 77°F, with 44.7mm of rain on about 3 days of 1mm or more. That is the tail of the wet season: November averages 178.3mm. NOAA's record at the same airport puts the mean wind at 2.7 m/s, up from 2.2 in November. The sea off Cartagena averages about 28.6°C in December. On 1 December the sun rises at 6:04am and sets at 5:38pm; by the 31st it sets at 5:51pm.

For the plazas at night: a cobalt cotton-poplin shirt-dress, a fuchsia cotton-voile midi skirt with an ivory cotton tank, and an ochre linen shirt-jacket worn open over either. For the day: cream-white tailored Bermuda shorts with the same tank. Tan woven fisherman sandals and a tan half-moon crossbody go with all of it, and a clear compact umbrella covers the 44.7mm December still gets. Leave the big tote at home.

From Thursday 17 to Saturday 26 December 2026, on the Alcaldía's 2026 cultural agenda, which gives the dates but not yet the venue. Last year's edition, the 38th, ran on the same dates at the Plazoleta de la India Catalina, with live music every day, and sold 38,023 pasteles from 50 tables. The cooks are matronas chosen by public call and a live cooking test; Maritza Cassiani Cabarcas took first place in 2025. Mayor Dumek Turbay opened that edition with "Este festival representa la esencia de lo que somos: sabor, música, familia y tradición", the city's flavour, music, family and tradition in one festival.

Early December has the 8 December holiday and, going by 2025, the switch-on of the lights; late December has the food festival. Tuesday 8 December is a national holiday under Ley 51 de 1983, one of the two December holidays that never move to a Monday, and Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December. The Alcaldía's agenda schedules the Super Navidad switch-on and the Mercadito Navideño in the Plaza de los Coches without dates; in 2025 the lights went on in the Plaza de la Aduana with a 12-minute show by more than 150 artists, reported on 9 December. The Festival del Pastel follows on 17–26 December. Sunset moves from 5:38pm to 5:51pm across the month.

The heat is the same; the rain and the reason to go are not. IDEAM's normal gives both months a 31°C high, and January's nights fall 0.8°C lower, to 24.0°C. The real change is rain: 44.7mm on about 3 days in December, against 0.5mm in January. The trade wind picks up from 2.7 to 3.2 m/s on NOAA's airport record, and the sea cools from about 28.6°C to 27.7°C. December is food and lights in the plazas. January is the festival month, with the Cartagena Festival de Música on 9–17 January 2027 and the Hay Festival on 28–31 January, which our January guide covers.

Cotton and linen in the heat, and colour after dark, in a city that dresses its plazas too. At the 2025 lights switch-on, Mayor Dumek Turbay said "Cartagena se viste de luces, pero sobre todo se viste de talento y comunidad": the city dresses in lights, but above all in talent and community. The Festival del Pastel's cooks are matronas, chosen by public call. The palenqueras trace their heritage to San Basilio de Palenque, which UNESCO says was "founded by escaped slaves as a refuge in the seventeenth century"; UNESCO proclaimed its cultural space in 2005 and inscribed it in 2008, and in 2026, 31 women of palenquera descent cooked at the city's sweets festival.
