TL;DR

Nassau in December: 27°C / 81°F days, 20°C / 68°F nights, and a Junkanoo parade that in 2025 began at 9pm on Christmas night.

Do
  • Aquamarine light cardigan — you are still in your seat at 7am, when the department's mean is 21.2°C
  • Black tapered joggers — the 2024 organiser put the parade at 13 hours, nearly all of it seated
  • Black leather low-tops — ALIV's 2025–26 directions say not to cross Bay Street, so you walk round to your section
  • Black zip crossbody — the UK Foreign Office warns that pickpocketing rises during festivals
  • Black cotton tee — short sleeves for the 9pm start, with the cardigan over it later
  • Gold flat mules — Atlantis requires shoes in its lobbies and indoor restaurants at all times
Don't
  • Buying a seat on the wrong side — in 2025 nobody was allowed to cross sides once the parade began
  • A screenshot of your ticket — in 2025 ALIV sold e-tickets only, scanned at the gate
  • A glass bottle or a pocketknife — in 2025 the route was a no-bottle zone behind police scanners
  • Leaving the cardigan at the hotel — the night falls to 20°C / 68°F and you sit through it

Junkanoo starts on Christmas night. Since the 2024 season the Boxing Day parade has begun at 9pm on 25 December, not at midnight, and in 2025 Douglas Hanna of the National Junkanoo Committee said "the parade started on time, I think at 9:00pm". The new National Junkanoo Authority runs the 2026 parade and has not yet published its times. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology's airport table gives December a 26.8°C afternoon, a 19.6°C night and a 21.2°C mean at 7am, and makes it the driest and least sunny month of the year. NOAA's record puts the sea off New Providence at about 25.3°C. Pack Christmas lunch and the parade as two outfits.

Junkanoo now starts on Christmas night, so Christmas Day takes two outfits: gold mules and white pleats for lunch, then black joggers, laced low-tops and an aquamarine cardigan for a seat held from 9pm into the morning.

The capsule

  1. Aquamarine Light Cotton Cardigan
    01
    Aquamarine light cotton cardigan

The Boxing Day parade started at 9pm in 2024 and 2025, and in 2024 the organisers aimed to finish by 11am, so you are still seated when the Bahamas Department of Meteorology's 7am mean of 21.2°C arrives. A fine cotton knit buttons over the black tee on the bleacher and over the silk camisole at dinner; aquamarine is the capsule's one colour.

  2. Black Relaxed Crew Neck Tee
    02
    Black cotton crew-neck tee

Short sleeves for the 9pm start, hours before the night bottoms out near dawn at 20°C / 68°F. A boxy cotton tee sits loose through a long stretch in one seat, and 2025 had plenty: The Tribune reported that long pauses between groups frustrated parts of the crowd. Black hides whatever the night spills on it.

  3. Black Tapered Jogger Pants
    03
    Black tapered joggers, ribbed cuffs

"We typically have 13 hours for the parade," Dion Miller, then chairman of the Junkanoo Corporation of New Providence, said when the 9pm start was announced in 2024, and you spend nearly all of them seated. A smooth elastic waistband sits flat through a night on a bleacher, and ribbed cuffs keep the hems clear of the steps. Black matches the tee.

  4. Black Low-Top Sneakers

ALIV's 2025–26 seating directions put it in capitals: "DO NOT CROSS BAY STREET unless instructed to by the Police". If your section is on the far side, you walk round the closures to reach it; section L is reached along Shirley Street and up Bank Lane. Laced leather on a firm sole handles that walk at 8pm and the walk out next morning.

  5. Black Crossbody Bag

    Black zip-top crossbody

Your phone is your ticket: in 2025 ALIV sold e-tickets only, and a gate agent scanned the QR code before walking you to your seat. Keep it in a crossbody that zips, worn in front. The UK Foreign Office warns that "The risk of petty theft and pickpocketing increases during regattas and festivals," and in 2025 every spectator passed a police scanner.

  6. Black Silk Camisole
    06
    Black silk cowl-neck camisole

For dinner out. Graycliff asks men for long trousers at dinner and suggests jackets without requiring them, so its dining room dresses up, and a black silk cowl-neck camisole with the white pleated skirt meets it. On Christmas Day the same pair goes to lunch. The aquamarine cardigan goes over your shoulders for the walk out into a night heading for 20°C.

  7. White knife-pleated midi skirt

Christmas Day now holds two outfits, lunch and then the parade from 9pm, and this is the lunch half, with the silk camisole and gold mules. On another day it goes to Bay Street with the black tee and low-tops. Knife pleats move air on a 26.8°C afternoon, and a midi length covers your knees in a resort dining room and on the street alike.

  8. Gold leather flat mules with a closed pointed toe and sequinned flower embroidery

Atlantis spells out its rule: "Shoes and cover-ups are required in the lobbies and in all indoor restaurants, lounges and public places at all times." A closed, pointed-toe flat in gold leather, embroidered with sequinned flowers, is a shoe for Christmas lunch rather than for the beach. Leave the pair at the hotel at 8pm, when you lace up for a night on a bleacher.

Day to night

Morning

Christmas Day lunch. Black silk camisole · white knife-pleated midi · gold flat mules · aquamarine cardigan over your shoulders. Sunset falls between 5:22pm and 5:31pm in the second half of the month; be back at the hotel by 7pm to change, because the day's second outfit is for a bleacher.

Evening

Boxing Day parade, which began at 9pm on 25 December in 2025. Aquamarine cardigan over the black tee · black tapered joggers · black leather low-tops · black zip crossbody worn in front, with the e-ticket on your phone. Walk in round the closures, find your gate agent, and stay on your side of Bay Street until the late morning.

A suggested look — aquamarine cotton cardigan, black cotton tee, black tapered joggers, black leather low-top sneakers.

What to avoid

  • A seat on the wrong side of Bay Street
  • A screenshot instead of the e-ticket in the ALIV app
  • Glass bottles, cans or a pocketknife at the police scanners
  • Christmas-lunch mules on a bleacher
  • Leaving the cardigan behind for a seat held into the morning

Frequently asked questions

Warm, dry and short on sun. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology's 1991–2020 table for Lynden Pindling International Airport (78073) gives December a mean high of 26.8°C and a low of 19.6°C, with 43mm of rain on 7 days, the least rain of any month. December also has the year's least sunshine, 7.0 hours a day. The mean at 7am is 21.2°C, and the lowest minimum on the table is 9.7°C. Sunrise moves from 6:38am on 1 December to 6:54am on the 31st, and sunset from 5:19pm to 5:31pm. The sea off New Providence averages about 25.3°C in December, on NOAA's OISST record.

For the Junkanoo parade: an aquamarine cardigan, a black cotton tee, black tapered joggers, black leather low-tops and a black zip crossbody. For Christmas lunch or a dinner out: a black silk camisole, a white knife-pleated midi skirt and gold flat mules. That covers a 26.8°C afternoon, a night that falls to 20°C / 68°F, and a bleacher seat from 9pm into the morning. Leave glass bottles and pocketknives at the hotel; in 2025 the police scanned every spectator.

In 2025 it started at 9pm on Christmas night, 25 December, and ran through the night into Boxing Day. The National Junkanoo Committee's 2025/26 rules set the time, and Douglas Hanna of the committee told reporters "the parade started on time, I think at 9:00pm, that was the B group coming out." The 9pm start dates from 2024, when it replaced the traditional midnight start, and that year the organisers aimed to finish by 11am. The 2026 parade belongs to the National Junkanoo Authority, created by an Act passed in March 2026, which had not published its times by 26 October 2026. Some official tourism pages still give a start after midnight; they are out of date.

Early December for film, late December for Junkanoo. The Bahamas International Film Festival runs 7–9 December 2026 on Harbour Island and 10–14 December in Nassau. In 2025 the Bahamas Junkanoo Festival staged rush-outs on Pompey Square on 18 and 19 December, before the Boxing Day parade on Christmas night. Book seats early: in 2025 ALIV put 8,056 tickets per parade on sale on 8 December at 10am, from $27.50 to $250 plus VAT, and Boxing Day sections H, I and F sold out within four days. Sunset stays between 5:19pm and 5:31pm all month.

January is a little cooler. The department's table gives it 26.1°C by day and 18.2°C at night, 0.8°C and 1.3°C below December, with the same 7 rain days, and December is the drier month by a whisker (1.70 against 1.76 inches). The sea cools from about 25.3°C to 24.3°C. Each month has its own parade: the Boxing Day parade began at 9pm on Christmas night in 2025, and the New Year's Day parade started at 2am on 1 January 2026. In 2025 the Boxing Day seats sold first, while New Year's Day was still wide open in mid-December. Our January guide covers the 2am parade and the cold fronts behind it.

On the route, Junkanoo outfits of fringed crepe paper, built by groups of 500 to 1,000 people. The Government of The Bahamas dates the fully fringed look to the mid-1930s, with newspaper fringe giving way to multi-coloured crepe paper, and adds that "it wasn’t until the sixties that women participated in Junkanoo!" The National Junkanoo Committee's 2025/26 rules required the major pieces to be at least 75% fringe and no more than 25% decoration. In the stands, dress for a long night instead: a layer, closed shoes and a bag that zips.
