What to Wear in Punta Cana in December
Punta Cana in December: 29°C / 84°F days, 22°C / 72°F nights, and a holiday fortnight split between the pool and restaurants with written dress codes.
- Ivory linen blazer — Sanctuary Cap Cana lists its Italian restaurant, Capriccio, as formal
- Jade wide-leg trousers — Lopesan Costa Bávaro's dressier code asks women for dresses or long pants
- Champagne satin midi — no resort publishes a code for 24 or 31 December, so dress to the strictest
- Gold block-heel sandals — Lopesan accepts dress shoes or sandals at its dressier tables
- Khaki chino shorts — Lopesan's casual code allows shorts, so save them for those nights
- Sand one-piece — the sea off Punta Cana averages about 27.3°C in December
- Swimwear at dinner — Sanctuary says bathing suits are not allowed at Capriccio
- A baseball cap at the bar — Barceló's Black Jack Bar bans caps under its casual code
- Shorts on a dressier night — Lopesan's code asks women for dresses or long pants
- Treating 1 December as storm-proof — NOAA notes that storms sometimes form after 30 November
December in Punta Cana runs on resort rules, and each resort writes its own. Lopesan Costa Bávaro has two evening codes, a casual one that allows shorts and a dressier one under which "ladies are required to wear dresses, long pants, dress shoes or sandals". Sanctuary Cap Cana lists Capriccio as formal. The most people meet those rules in the holiday fortnight: in 2025 Punta Cana's airport handled 1,087,621 December passengers and expected its peak between 24 and 31 December. INDOMET's normal gives a 29.4°C afternoon, NOAA's record a sea of about 27.3°C, and NOAA's National Hurricane Center ends the Atlantic season on 30 November. Pack for the pool and for the strictest table.
Pack for the strictest code on your resort's list: jade trousers and an ivory linen blazer pass where shorts fail, and a champagne satin midi covers the holiday dinners no resort writes a rule for.
The capsule
01Ivory herringbone linen blazerSanctuary Cap Cana's dining page gives Capriccio, its Italian restaurant, a line no other venue there carries: "Dress Code: Formal". An ivory herringbone linen blazer, worn open over the silk shell and jade trousers, answers it without a dress. Linen suits a dining room that opens after a 5:59pm sunset, on a night that falls to 22°C / 72°F.
02Ivory sleeveless silk shellUnder the blazer on a dressier night, alone with the khaki shorts on a casual one. Lopesan Costa Bávaro's dressier code sets no rule for tops: it asks women only for dresses or long pants, so a draped ivory silk shell passes with the jade trousers. Sleeveless, it suits an afternoon that averages 29.4°C on INDOMET's normal.
03Jade crepe wide-leg trousersFor Lopesan Costa Bávaro's dressier tables, where women wear dresses or long pants and men "must wear long trousers (chinos or jeans)". Lopesan lists which restaurants use that code only in its welcome magazine, so pack for it every night. Pressed jade crepe with a front crease reads as long pants at any table, and a wide leg moves air after a 29.4°C day.
04Champagne satin long-sleeve midi dressFor the night your resort marks formal, and for the holiday dinners. Puntacana Resort's 2025 New Year's Dinner Party was "a gala evening featuring dinner, live music, entertainment, and fireworks", yet no resort page gives a dress code for 24 or 31 December. A champagne satin midi with long sleeves and a bias-cut flare meets the strictest code on any list.
05Gold leather block-heel sandalsLopesan accepts sandals as well as dress shoes at its dressier tables, for women and men alike, so a sandal is no compromise at dinner. Gold leather straps and a low block heel suit both the jade trousers and the champagne satin. A block heel stays steady on resort paths after rain, which falls on about 9 December days on NOAA's daily record for the airport.
06Ivory leather mini top-handle bagSanctuary posts "Bathing suits not allowed" under Capriccio and The Steakhouse, and a straw beach tote carried in reads as pool kit. An ivory leather mini bag with a gold turn-lock holds a phone, a card and a room key, matches the blazer and the champagne satin, and clips onto its long strap for the walk between buildings after dark.
07Sand tie-front one-pieceFor the afternoons before any code applies. The sea off Punta Cana averages about 27.3°C in December on NOAA's record, warm enough for a swim every day. A sand one-piece with a knot at the bust and thin adjustable straps stays at the pool: change before dinner, because Barceló's Black Jack Bar refuses beachwear even under its casual code.
08Khaki chino shortsFor the casual nights. Lopesan's casual code lets women wear "dresses, jeans, shorts and T-shirts", and Barceló's Black Jack Bar allows "Formal or Bermuda shorts" with a collared shirt or T-shirt and sandals. Tailored khaki chinos with belt loops pass both with the ivory shell. On a dressier night they fail by design, so switch to the jade trousers.
Day to night
Pool and lunch. Sand tie-front one-piece in a sea that averages about 27.3°C · khaki chino shorts and the ivory silk shell for lunch out of the sun. Sunrise is at 6:58am on the 15th, and the 29.4°C afternoon is the time to swim.
À-la-carte dinner on a dressier night. Ivory herringbone linen blazer open over the ivory silk shell · jade crepe wide-leg trousers · gold block-heel sandals · ivory mini top-handle bag. On a formal night, at Capriccio or a resort's holiday dinner, swap the shell and trousers for the champagne satin midi. Sunset is at 5:59pm on the 15th, so dinner starts after dark.
A suggested look — ivory herringbone linen blazer, ivory sleeveless silk shell, jade wide-leg trousers, gold leather block-heel sandals.
What to avoid
- Swimwear at a Sanctuary Cap Cana dinner, cover-up or not
- A baseball cap at Barceló's Black Jack Bar
- Shorts on a dressier night at Lopesan Costa Bávaro
- Guessing a gala dress code for 24 or 31 December
- Treating December as storm-proof or rain-free
Frequently asked questions
Warm, with showers. INDOMET's 1991–2020 normal for Punta Cana International Airport (78479) gives December a mean high of 29.4°C and a low of 21.9°C, with 91.3mm of rain. INDOMET publishes no rain-day count; the 9 days with 1mm or more are computed from NOAA NCEI's daily record for the airport. December is wetter than the two months that follow, and an INDOMET forecaster, quoted by Diario Libre in 2025, put the official start of the cold-front season at the end of November. Sunrise moves from 6:50am on 1 December to 7:06am on the 31st, and sunset from 5:56pm to 6:08pm. The sea off Punta Cana averages about 27.3°C in December, on NOAA's OISST record.
For dinners: an ivory herringbone linen blazer, an ivory sleeveless silk shell, jade crepe wide-leg trousers, a champagne satin midi, gold block-heel sandals and an ivory mini top-handle bag. For the pool and the casual nights: a sand tie-front one-piece and khaki chino shorts. That covers a 29.4°C afternoon, a night that falls to 22°C / 72°F, and the dressier evening codes that resorts such as Lopesan Costa Bávaro and Sanctuary Cap Cana publish.
Each resort sets its own, restaurant by restaurant, and none is Dominican law. Lopesan Costa Bávaro runs two evening codes: a casual one that allows women dresses, jeans, shorts and T-shirts, and a dressier one that requires dresses or long pants, with men in long trousers, chinos or jeans. Its welcome magazine lists which restaurant uses which. Sanctuary Cap Cana marks Capriccio formal and The Steakhouse smart casual, with bathing suits not allowed at either. Barceló Bávaro Palace's Black Jack Bar bans baseball caps and beachwear under a casual code. No resort page publishes a dress code for its 24 or 31 December dinners, so ask yours when you book and dress to the strictest code on its list.
Early December for space, late December for the holiday programme. The Atlantic hurricane season ends on 30 November, although NOAA's National Hurricane Center notes that storms sometimes form after it. The last week is the crowded one. On 19 December 2025 Diario Libre reported that the airport expected its biggest volume between 24 and 31 December, about 300,000 passengers, with Saturdays the busiest days; Giovanni Rainieri, its director of airside operations, said "En este mes estamos rompiendo todos los récords": every record was falling that month. In 2026, 26 December is a Saturday. In 2025 Puntacana Resort ran a Christmas Bazaar, a Christmas Concert at its chapel and a New Year's Dinner Party; its 2026 dates are not yet published.
January is a touch cooler, with a little less rain. INDOMET's normal gives it 28.5°C by day and 21.2°C at night, 0.9°C and 0.7°C below December, though both months print 29°C / 84°F afternoons. Rain falls from 91.3mm to 84.7mm, on about 9 days in each. The sea cools from about 27.3°C to 26.5°C, and sunset on the 15th moves from 5:59pm to 6:17pm. The resort dress codes do not change. January has its own date: the Día de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, Thursday 21 January 2027, a national holiday centred on the basilica in Higüey. Our January guide covers it.
At the resorts the dinner codes set the floor: long trousers or a dress at the dressier tables. The Dominican anchor is Oscar de la Renta, "born in 1932 in Santo Domingo", as the Carnegie Corporation of New York records. In 1997 he and Julio Iglesias joined Puntacana Resort & Club as co-investors; the resort dates back to 1971, when Frank R. Rainieri and Theodore W. Kheel formed their partnership. Tortuga Bay, inside the resort, calls itself "the only hotel designed by the legendary Oscar de la Renta", with 13 villas. Even the name is a brand: the company says "Punta Cana" began in the early 1970s as its name for land once called Punta Borrachón, Drunkard's Point.
