What to Wear in Key West in December
Key West in December: 25°C / 77°F days, 20°C / 68°F nights, a lighted boat parade on the 12th and New Year's Eve's midnight drops.
- Navy fine-knit cardigan — 8pm averages 71.5°F, and the Harbor Walk party starts at 6pm
- Lime-green ribbed tank — a December afternoon still reaches 25.4°C
- White cropped twill trousers — twill comes off a harbour bench without the creases linen takes
- Pink-and-green print shift — nothing binds at the waist through a night on your feet on Duval
- White leather deck shoes — closed toes for the crowd that packs Duval and Greene at midnight
- Flamingo-pink crossbody — both hands free for the candy and beads thrown from the decks
- A drink or a glass bottle on a City beach — the City bans alcohol and glass from the sand at any time
- Open sandals at the midnight drops — in a packed street, someone stands on your toes
- Choosing your drop site at 11:55pm — you watch midnight from the back of the crowd
- Waiting for a car on Duval after midnight — in 2025 several blocks stayed closed to vehicles most of the night
Pack for two parades after dark. NOAA NCEI's normals for Key West International Airport give December a 25.4°C afternoon and a night that falls to 68.3°F (20.2°C). The hourly normal at 8pm, when the Lighted Boat Parade sails into the Key West Bight on Saturday 12 December, is 71.5°F. Schooner Wharf Bar, which runs the parade, sets the tone: "Look for palm trees - not spruce, fir or pine - aboard the holiday vessels." Nineteen nights later the town stands on Duval Street for midnight, and in 2025 a lighted conch shell dropped onto Sloppy Joe's roof. Both nights mean hours on your feet, so build the trip around one navy cardigan and closed shoes.
December in Key West happens after dark. Put the navy cardigan on for the Harbor Walk at 8pm, lace the deck shoes for the New Year's Eve crowd, and keep both hands free for the candy that comes off the boats.
The capsule
01Navy fine-knit cardigan, crew neckFor the Harbor Walk. The parade party starts at 6pm and the boats arrive at 8pm, when NOAA's hourly normal is 71.5°F: mild, until you have stood beside the water for two hours. An average December also brings 4 nights at or below 60°F. Buttoned, it goes over the lime tank on parade night; open, it goes over the print shift on New Year's Eve.
02Lime-green ribbed tank, racer cutAfternoons still reach 25.4°C on NOAA's normals, warm enough to walk Old Town in a tank. A fine rib lies flat under the cardigan, with no sleeves to bunch at the elbow, and the racer cut looks finished when the cardigan comes off. Lime against white and navy is also easy for your group to find on a dark, crowded harbour front.
03Pink linen tie-front shirtFor a day on the water. The Key West "Bight" Before Christmas calendar lists Cocoa and Carols cruises on Schooner America 2.0 from 19 to 24 December and a Christmas Day brunch sail from 10am to 12:30pm. Long sleeves keep the sun off your arms on deck, the knot at the hem sits above the trousers, and it layers over the tank ashore.
04White cropped cotton-twill trousersParade night means two hours on the Harbor Walk, some of it perched on a bench or a dock edge. Pressed cotton twill gets up from that without the creases linen takes, and a crop above the ankle keeps the hem off wet boards. White catches the boat lights after the mid-month sunset at 5:41pm and goes with every top in this capsule.
05Pink-and-green floral-print shift, sleevelessLilly Pulitzer's shifts wore Key West prints. Cooper Hewitt credits Key West Hand Print Fabrics with every one of Pulitzer's prints from 1962 to 1985, most drawn by Suzie Zuzek. On New Year's Eve a shift has no waistband to bind through hours on your feet on Duval Street, sleeveless suits a packed crowd, and the navy cardigan goes over it for the walk home.
06White leather deck shoesAt midnight on New Year's Eve, Keys Weekly reported in 2025, "crowds pack Duval and Greene streets around Sloppy Joe’s". Closed leather toes come through that crowd where sandals do not, and laces keep the shoes on when the street carries you along. A deck shoe also does its first job on Schooner America 2.0, where a pale rubber sole grips a wet deck.
07Dark brown woven leather sandals, buckled back strapFor daytime in Old Town. Hemingway Home opens every day of the year, Christmas Day included, with tours every 15 minutes from 9:15am, and a woven upper breathes on a 25.4°C walk there. A buckled back strap keeps the sandal on in beach sand. For a pair made on the island, Kino Sandals has cut and glued leather sandals by hand since 1966.
08Flamingo-pink mini crossbodyParade boats throw candy and beads to the crowd, and Schooner Wharf promises children "the chance to catch" them, so keep both hands free. A mini bag on a long strap holds a card, a phone and a room key, and its turn-lock flap stays shut in a crush. Flamingo pink picks up the pink in the shift and stands out against the navy cardigan.
Day to night
A day in Old Town. Lime-green tank · pink tie-front shirt · white cropped twill trousers · dark brown woven sandals. Hemingway Home runs tours every 15 minutes from 9:15am, every day of the year, and the sun sets at 5:41pm on 15 December.
Boat parade, Saturday 12 December. Lime-green tank · navy cardigan · white cropped twill trousers · white deck shoes · flamingo-pink crossbody. The Harbor Walk party starts at 6pm and the boats arrive at 8pm, when the hourly normal is 71.5°F. On New Year's Eve, swap the tank and trousers for the print shift and keep the cardigan and deck shoes.

Frequently asked questions
Warm by day, mild at night and mostly dry. NOAA NCEI's normals for Key West International Airport (USW00012836) give December an afternoon high of 25.4°C and a low of 68.3°F (20.2°C), with 2.16 inches (55mm) of rain on about 6 days. The hourly normals put 6pm at 72.4°F and 8pm at 71.5°F, and an average December brings 4 nights at or below 60°F. The National Weather Service in Key West calls December through April the dry season, which "receives just shy of 25 percent of the annual rainfall, usually ahead of cold fronts." The sea at NCEI's Key West gauge averages 75.3°F (24.1°C). Sunrise moves from 6:54am to 7:11am over the month and sunset from 5:38pm to 5:49pm. The Atlantic hurricane season ends on 30 November.
A navy fine-knit cardigan, a lime-green ribbed tank, a pink tie-front shirt, white cropped twill trousers, a pink-and-green print shift, white leather deck shoes, dark brown woven sandals and a flamingo-pink mini crossbody. That covers a 25.4°C afternoon, two hours on the Harbor Walk at about 71.5°F, a holiday sail on Schooner America 2.0 and midnight in a packed street on New Year's Eve. Leave the big tote at home: you want both hands free when the boats throw candy.
A layer and closed shoes. The Schooner Wharf Bar/Absolut Vodka Lighted Boat Parade sails into the Key West Bight at 8pm on Saturday 12 December 2026, and the organiser says "the family fun begins at 6 p.m. along the brilliantly decorated Harbor Walk", with the Bahama Village Music Program's House of Pan steel band. The judges' stand is at Schooner Wharf Bar, 202 William Street. Candy and beads are thrown to spectators from the decks, so wear a crossbody and keep your hands free. NOAA's hourly normal at 8pm is 71.5°F, and a cardigan over a tank covers two hours standing by the water.
Early December for the harbour, late December for the holidays. The Harbor Walk of Lights at the Historic Seaport is on every night from Thanksgiving eve through New Year's Eve, and the boat parade sails on Saturday 12 December. From 19 to 24 December, Schooner America 2.0 runs Cocoa and Carols music cruises on select dates, and on Christmas Day a brunch sail from 10am to 12:30pm. Late December runs cooler: NOAA's daily normal highs and lows slide from 79.1°F and 70.2°F on 1 December to 76.3°F and 66.3°F on the 31st. Hemingway Home stays open every day of the year, Christmas Day and New Year's Day included.
December is warmer. NOAA's airport normals make January cooler on every count: 24.3°C by day and 65.5°F (18.6°C) at night, against December's 25.4°C and 68.3°F (20.2°C). At 8pm January averages 69.2°F to December's 71.5°F, and it brings 7.3 nights at or below 60°F against 4.0. January has slightly more days with rain, 6.9 against 6.4, but less rain overall: 1.83 inches to 2.16. The sea at the Key West gauge cools from 75.3°F to 72.5°F. December's plans are parades, outdoors and on your feet after dark; January's are poetry readings, seated at the San Carlos Institute, and our January guide dresses those.
Prints and flat shoes, and both have a local history. Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, says Suzie Zuzek was a staff designer at Key West Hand Print Fabrics, "where Pulitzer sourced most of her fabrics—and all of her prints—between 1962 and 1985". The museum holds her drawing Tennessee's Hibiscus, dated 1973, and describes a palette "employing both the brilliant hues of the tropical flowers and the subtle browns, ochres, and grays used in her renderings of animals". Kino Sandals has made leather sandals by hand in Key West since 1966. On New Year's Eve, Bourbon St Pub at 724 Duval runs its "If The Shoe Fits" contest, whose winner becomes the star of the High Heel Shoe Drop, and Schooner Wharf has lowered its Pirate Wench since 2019.
