TL;DR

Key West in January: 24°C / 75°F days, 19°C / 66°F nights, and four days of poetry at the San Carlos Institute on Duval Street.

Do
  • Light-wash denim shirt, worn open — the walk between sessions meets a front's northwest wind
  • Shell-pink short-sleeve cardigan — buttoned, it is a top for a 24.3°C walk to lunch
  • Oatmeal crew-neck sweater — an average January has 7 nights at or below 60°F
  • Black pleated trousers — four days of sessions run back to back in one hall
  • Black lace midi dress — one dress for the opening-night reception and a dinner outside
  • Black leather derbies — laced and closed for four days on foot and the cooler nights
Don't
  • A straw hat on a front day — NWS Key West forecast 25 to 30 mph winds behind the front of 15 January 2026
  • A boat trip the day after a front — NWS Key West warned of very hazardous seas on 29 January 2026
  • Key West Food & Wine without photo ID — it is 21-and-over and asks you to bring it
  • Booking your room late — the seminar warns that availability is limited in winter

January in Key West belongs to poetry. The 44th Key West Literary Seminar runs 7–10 January 2027, and its organisers write that "Thirty-four years ago we focused on poetry with a visionary gathering dedicated to the life and work of Elizabeth Bishop". In 2026 every session ran at the San Carlos Institute, 516 Duval Street, one after another, so you sit indoors most of four days. NOAA NCEI's airport normals give a 24.3°C afternoon and a night that falls to 65.5°F (18.6°C), and on 15 January 2026 NWS Key West forecast northwest winds of 25 to 30 mph behind a cold front. Pack a denim shirt and a pink knit for the hall, and an oatmeal sweater for dinner outside.

Poetry week runs on one walk and one layer: a denim shirt over a pink knit from the hotel to the San Carlos in the morning, and an oatmeal sweater for dinner outside on the night a front comes through.

The capsule

  1. Light-wash blue denim shirt, oversized, with one chest pocket
    01

Your layer for the street. Sessions run back to back at the San Carlos Institute, so the walk along Duval is the only weather you meet. Behind the front of 15 January 2026, NWS Key West forecast northwest winds of 25 to 30 mph, with gusts near 40. Worn open over the pink knit, denim blocks that wind at noon and comes off indoors.

  2. Shell-pink short-sleeve crew-neck cardigan with self buttons
    02
    Shell-pink short-sleeve cardigan

Buttoned to the neck, a short-sleeve cardigan works as a top: neat enough for a seminar hall and cool enough for NOAA's 24.3°C afternoon on the walk to lunch. Shell pink sits quietly under light-wash denim and over black trousers. A ribbed hem stays put when you sit, so the knit looks the same at the last session of the day as at the first.

  3. Oatmeal crew-neck sweater in a fine textured knit

For the night a front comes through. An average January brings 7.3 nights at or below 60°F and 1.1 at or below 50°F, and NWS Key West's brief of 29 January 2026 told the Keys to "Prepare for the coldest temperatures thus far this winter season". Oatmeal goes over the lace dress at an outdoor table and over the pink cardigan walking back.

  4. Black Cropped Straight-Leg Trousers
    04
    Black pleated trousers, cropped

Seminar sessions run consecutively in one hall from Thursday to Sunday, and a pleated front gives you room to sit through every one. Black takes the shell-pink cardigan by day and the oatmeal sweater at night. A crop at the ankle shows the laced derbies and clears a wet kerb when the rain that runs ahead of a cold front comes through.

  5. Black cotton-guipure lace midi dress, elbow sleeves
    05
Black cotton-lace midi dress, short sleeves

Seminar registration includes the opening-night reception, catered with an open bar, and this is the dress for it. Cotton guipure has weight without heat, sheer lace sleeves cover your shoulders, and a tiered skirt sits well in a row of seats if you go straight on to an evening session. At 6pm NOAA's hourly normal is 70.5°F; the oatmeal sweater waits in the tote.

  6. Black Leather Thin-Sole Derby
    06
    Black leather derbies

Most of this week happens on foot: hotel to the San Carlos at 516 Duval, out for lunch, back for the afternoon, then dinner. Laced black leather stays on and stays smart throughout, and keeps your feet warm on one of January's 7 nights at or below 60°F, where sandals do not. A thin sole crosses a hall quietly during a reading.

  7. Natural straw boater, sky-blue band

For the lunch walk on Duval and an hour in the Elizabeth Bishop House garden, open weekdays from 10am to 3pm, the seminar's Thursday and Friday included. A flat brim shades your face on a 24.3°C afternoon, and the sky-blue band picks up the denim. Leave it at the hotel on a front day, when a 25 mph wind takes a boater straight off.

  8. Stone canvas zip tote, olive webbing handles

You leave in the morning and return after dark, so the bag carries the day: a notebook, the oatmeal sweater for the evening, the denim shirt once it comes off. A zip top keeps it all in under a seat. At Key West Food & Wine, 27 to 31 January, the photo ID the 21-and-over festival asks for goes in the front pocket.

Frequently asked questions

Mild, windy behind the fronts and frost-free on record. NOAA NCEI's normals for Key West International Airport (USW00012836) make January the coolest month, with an afternoon high of 24.3°C, a low of 65.5°F (18.6°C) and the year's lowest daily normals from 11 to 20 January. Rain totals 1.83 inches (46mm) on about 7 days, and an average January brings 7.3 nights at or below 60°F. The hourly normals put 6pm at 70.5°F and 8pm at 69.2°F. The National Weather Service in Key West notes: "There is still no record of frost, ice, sleet, or snow in Key West." The sea at NCEI's Key West gauge averages 72.5°F (22.5°C), its coolest of the year. Sunrise holds near 7:10am, and sunset moves from 5:50pm on 1 January to 6:12pm on the 31st.

A light-wash denim shirt, a shell-pink short-sleeve cardigan, an oatmeal crew-neck sweater, black pleated trousers, a black cotton-lace midi dress, black leather derbies, a straw boater and a stone canvas tote. That covers four days of sessions at the San Carlos Institute, an opening-night reception, a 24.3°C walk at lunch and a night that falls to 19°C / 66°F, or below 60°F when a front comes through. Leave the boater at the hotel on a windy day.

Something you can sit in all day, with a layer for the street. The 44th Key West Literary Seminar, "Poetry", runs from Thursday 7 to Sunday 10 January 2027, and the FAQ it wrote for the 2026 edition says "All presentations take place in a single location, the San Carlos Institute (516 Duval Street), and run consecutively". Registration includes the opening-night reception, catered with an open bar, and selected sessions are free and open to the public. The FAQ sets no dress code, so dress for the hall and the walk: trousers or a midi dress, a knit, and a shirt worn as a jacket for the wind. The detailed schedule comes out in early December.

Early January for the poetry, late January for the food. The Literary Seminar runs 7–10 January 2027; in 2026 it ran 8–11 January. The middle of the month is the coolest stretch of the year, with the lowest daily normals from 11 to 20 January. Key West Food & Wine, in its 18th edition, runs from Wednesday 27 to Sunday 31 January under the theme "Connected by the Oceans", and its organisers write: "Water does not divide us—it connects us." It is 21-and-over, so bring photo ID. Sunset moves from 6:00pm on the 15th to 6:12pm on the 31st.

Yes, a little. NOAA's airport normals make January the coolest month: 24.3°C by day and 65.5°F (18.6°C) at night, against December's 25.4°C and 68.3°F (20.2°C). At 8pm January averages 69.2°F to December's 71.5°F, and it brings 7.3 nights at or below 60°F against 4.0. January has slightly more days with rain, 6.9 against 6.4, but less rain overall: 1.83 inches to 2.16. The sea at the Key West gauge drops from 75.3°F to 72.5°F. December's plans are two parades, outdoors and on your feet after dark; January's are poetry, seated at the San Carlos Institute, and our December guide dresses the parades.

Layers and shoes you can walk in, in a town with its own poet's house and its own sandal maker. Elizabeth Bishop bought the eyebrow house at 624 White Street in 1938 for $2,000 and sold it in 1946, the year her debut collection, North & South, came out; she wrote to Marianne Moore that "The house seems perfectly beautiful to me, inside and out". The Key West Literary Seminar, founded in 1983, bought the house in 2019 and runs its programs from there. For your feet, the local answer is older than the seminar: Kino Sandals has cut, assembled and glued leather sandals by hand in Key West since 1966.
