What to Wear in Cancún in December

Pack for the fronts. SMN's 1991–2020 normals for its Cancún station give December 29.4°C by day and 21°C at night, with 97mm of rain over about 12 days, and this winter's forecast puts December at the top of the cold-front season: nine fronts for Mexico, in a season of 56 against an average of 50. In Cancún a norte means wind from the north, rougher water and often a red flag, which the municipality's beach code defines as entry prohibited. On front days last January, local reports showed the port closed to boats under 40 feet while the Isla Mujeres ferries kept running, so the snorkel trips wait. Between fronts the water is back to swimming. After dark, Coco Bongo's own dress code is "casual elegante": no beach sandals, no swim shorts, no beachwear. Pack a jacket for the wind, a swimsuit for the good days and closed shoes for the club.

   Oversized light-wash denim jacket

   A norte arrives from the north with wind and rain, and the station's December nights average 21°C before the wind is counted. An oversized denim jacket blocks the breeze on a beach walk, goes over the kaftan at dinner, and layers over the blouse on the way to the club. Light wash keeps it from reading as city clothing in the Hotel Zone.

   Turquoise square-neck one-piece, wide straps

   For the green-flag days between fronts. Cancún's mayor put the rule plainly in December 2025: "Bandera roja es peligro, significa no meterse al mar", red means danger, stay out of the sea. A square neckline and wide straps stay put in the swell a front leaves behind, and turquoise is the colour the water goes back to when the wind drops.

   White ruffle-collar blouse, short puff sleeves

   Coco Bongo's FAQ says "jeans, zapatos cerrados y camisas/blusas son perfectos": jeans, closed shoes and shirts or blouses are perfect. A white cotton blouse with a ruffled collar meets that and stays cool in a packed room. The club suggests arriving between 10 and 10:30pm, and the show runs about five hours.

   Navy pleated wide-leg trousers

   Coco Bongo's "casual elegante" rules out beachwear, and navy wide-leg trousers with a pressed pleat read dressed without the weight of denim on a 21°C night. They go to a Hotel Zone dinner first and the club after, and navy anchors the white blouse and the black shoes.

   Black leather T-bar pumps, low block heel

   The club names closed shoes, and you stand for most of a five-hour show. A T-bar strap keeps the shoe on through dancing, and a low block heel is one you can still walk in at two in the morning. Black leather wipes clean of a spilled drink.

   White V-neck kaftan maxi

   A cover-up that goes from the beach to Christmas lunch on the 25th, a federal rest day in Mexico. Short sleeves and a gathered waist keep it light at 29.4°C, the maxi length covers you from a beach bar to a restaurant, and white takes the denim jacket over it after sunset at about 6pm.

   Tan leather two-strap slides

   Off in a second at the sand line and back on for the walk to lunch. Two straps hold your foot on soft sand better than one. Keep them for the beach: Coco Bongo lists beach sandals among the things to avoid at the door.

   Round raffia crossbody, orange leather flap

   Small enough for the club, and it holds the official photo ID Coco Bongo checks at the door, since entry is 18 and over. Raffia and orange leather carry the beach into the evening, and a crossbody strap keeps it on you in a five-hour crowd.

What to avoid
