What to Wear in Miami in December

Pack for a gallery week in a wet winter. NOAA's normals for Miami International Airport give December 25.7°C by day and 64.3°F at night, with 2.44 inches of rain over about 8 days and 9.2 nights below 60°F in an average year. This year leans cooler and wetter. On 10 September NOAA's Climate Prediction Center wrote that "El Niño is strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event" through the northern winter, and the Weather Service office in Miami says "El Niño conditions usually bring cool and wet conditions to our region." In the last strong El Niño winter, 2023–24, it recorded cloudier days and lower daytime temperatures. The first week belongs to Miami Art Week, from 30 November to 6 December, and the fairs set the rules for your bag. Art Basel's fits in a line: "Only one bag per person is allowed." Backpacks are out at any size, and so are large umbrellas. So build the week around one crossbody, a shell that packs into it and a jacket for after dark.

   Mauve hooded packable rain shell

   Large umbrellas are on Art Basel's prohibited list, so this month the rain gear has to be worn, not carried. A hooded packable shell folds into the crossbody on the way through the doors and comes out for the walk between the Convention Center and the fairs on the sand. NWS Miami expects an El Niño winter to run wet, and smoky mauve sits well over navy and cream.

   For the nights. An average December brings 9.2 nights below 60°F at the airport, and last year's coldest reading there, 47°F, came on 31 December. A cropped, collarless cut goes over the slip dress without hiding it, buttons over the silk shell by day, and ends above the crossbody strap instead of trapping it.

   Under the jacket for a day at the fairs, when a warm walk outside turns into a cooled hall inside. A sleeveless silk shell works in both, jacket on or off. The gathered neckline looks finished without jewellery, and bone keeps your outfit quiet next to the art.

   Art Basel's public days run from 11am to 6pm, and Design Miami, NADA and Untitled all open the same week. Denim holds its shape through seven hours of standing and a damp bench outside, where linen gives up by lunchtime. Ecru stays light under an afternoon sun and pairs with the bone shell and the cream jacket.

   Off-white canvas sneakers, navy heel

   Flat, laced and broken in: the shoe for a week of fair floors and the walks between them. Design Miami sits at Convention Center Drive and 19th Street, NADA is across Biscayne Bay at Ice Palace Studios, and Untitled is out on the sand. Off-white with a navy heel tab goes with the ecru jeans and the navy slip alike, and canvas dries overnight after a wet walk back.

   The evening dress for Art Week parties and Christmas dinner. Silk folds into a corner of the suitcase, and the creases drop out after an hour on a hanger in a steamy bathroom. With the cream jacket over it you are covered for an 18°C night, and without it for a warm room.

   Cognac two-strap sandals, buckled back strap

   Untitled Art, Miami Beach, stands on the sand from 2 to 6 December, and last year's New Year's Eve concert at Collins Park played on the sand. A sandal with a buckled back strap stays on in soft sand, where a slide fills up and slips off. Cognac leather warms the navy slip dress, and a footbed carries you back along the boardwalk.
