TL;DR

Nassau in January: 26°C / 79°F days, 18°C / 64°F nights, Junkanoo from 2am on New Year's Day in 2026, and a cold front about every five days.

Do
  • Navy packable windbreaker — the Nor'wester follows each cold front, and at 2am you meet it sitting still
  • Coral linen tee — in 2026 the parade started two hours after midnight, so New Year's Eve and the stands share one outfit
  • White slim jeans — denim keeps the wind off your legs on a bleacher from 2am, nearly five hours before sunrise
  • White leather low-tops — in 2025 the police closed Bay Street and the streets around it, so you arrive on foot
  • Coral zip crossbody — the UK Foreign Office warns that pickpocketing rises during festivals
  • White cotton button-down — Atlantis requires cover-ups in its lobbies and indoor restaurants
Don't
  • Swimming a north-shore beach the day a front comes through — in January 2018 police closed Cabbage Beach for rip currents
  • Party heels for the parade — in 2026 it started at 2am, and you sit on a bleacher through the dark hours
  • Swimming at dusk or after dark — the UK Foreign Office says it raises the shark risk, even close to resorts
  • Bare arms at 2am — the night falls to 18°C / 64°F and you are sitting in the wind

January opens at 2am. The National Junkanoo Committee's 2025/26 rules state that "the New Year’s Day parade begins at 2 am on January 1", so New Year's Eve runs straight from midnight into the stands on Bay Street. Arlene Nash-Ferguson dates modern Junkanoo to the New Year's Day parade of 1948, the first after a wartime ban. Then the weather turns. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology says cold fronts "pass through these islands once, every five days" in winter, with a north-west wind behind them, and its airport table makes January the coolest month: 26.1°C by day, 18.2°C at night. NOAA's record puts the sea at about 24.3°C. Pack one wind layer for both.

New Year's Eve in Nassau ends on a bleacher. In 2026 the parade started at 2am, so the outfit you toast in needs a navy windbreaker zipped over it and shoes you can sit in through the dark hours.

The capsule

  1. Navy Packable Rain Shell
    01
    Navy hooded packable windbreaker

Behind each front comes what the Department of Meteorology calls "the brisk Nor'wester, following a cold front in winter", and at 2am you meet it sitting still. A hooded navy windbreaker with elastic cuffs zips over the coral tee and keeps the wind off your neck. The department notes that fronts can yield much rain; the hood takes a shower, and the shell folds small after sunrise.

  2. Coral linen-cotton crew-neck tee
    02
    Coral linen-cotton tee

New Year's Eve and the parade are one outfit, because in 2026 the parade started two hours after midnight. A boxy coral linen-cotton tee works at a Bay Street countdown and under a windbreaker on the bleacher, and it breathes when the sun comes up at 6:55am and the afternoon climbs to 26.1°C. Coral sits well against the navy shell and the white jeans.

  3. White Slim Jeans
    03
    White slim jeans

From 2am, nearly five hours before sunrise, you sit in the open with a north-westerly coming through, and denim stops wind that linen lets through. A slim, straight white five-pocket jean looks dressed enough for midnight, goes with the coral tee and navy shell, and stays on for the cold-front days after, when the department's table puts the January night at 18.2°C.

  4. White Leather Sneakers

You arrive on foot. In 2025 the police closed Bay Street, Shirley Street and the streets around them for the parades, and ALIV's seating directions send you round the closures to your gate, where an agent scans your e-ticket and walks you in. Laced white leather takes that walk in the dark, the hours on a bleacher and the walk out again.

  5. Coral nylon zip crossbody
    05
    Coral nylon zip-top crossbody

One bag that zips, worn in front. The UK Foreign Office warns that petty theft and pickpocketing rise during festivals, and in 2025 your parade ticket lived on your phone. A coral nylon crossbody with a zip top and a zipped back pocket holds phone, card and cash, shrugs off a shower and matches the tee, so it reads as part of the outfit at midnight.

  6. Hot-pink high-neck one-piece, crossed back straps
    06

For the beach once the front has passed and the wind returns east. The sea off New Providence averages about 24.3°C in January, and a high round neck with crossed back straps stays put in a breeze. Pick calm water: in January 2018 police shut Cabbage Beach after the department warned of rough surf and rip currents on north and east coast beaches.

  7. White Cotton Button-Down
    07

Your cover-up, and on Atlantis's property it is the rule: "Shoes and cover-ups are required in the lobbies and in all indoor restaurants, lounges and public places at all times." A long-sleeved white cotton shirt goes over the one-piece for the walk from the beach to lunch, rolls to the elbow at 26.1°C and buttons up when the Nor'wester blows.

  8. Gold leather flat sandals with an ankle strap

Shoes are the other half of that Atlantis rule, and a flat gold leather sandal with an ankle strap covers beach, lobby and lunch in one pair. The buckled strap keeps it on in loose sand while the wind is up, and gold lifts the white shirt and the hot-pink one-piece. These come out on the warm afternoons after a front.

Day to night

Morning

The beach day after a front. Hot-pink one-piece · white cotton button-down worn open · gold flat sandals · coral crossbody. In mid-January the sun rises at 6:56am and sets at 5:41pm, and the department's 1pm mean is 24.8°C, so swim after lunch once the wind has eased.

Evening

New Year's Eve into the 2am parade. Coral linen tee · white slim jeans · white leather low-tops · navy windbreaker zipped up after midnight · coral crossbody worn in front. You are in the stands from 2am, and sunrise is not until 6:55am; in 2026 the results came out that afternoon.

A suggested look — navy hooded windbreaker, coral linen tee, white slim jeans, white leather low-top sneakers.

What to avoid

  • North-shore swims on the day a front comes through
  • Swimming at dusk or after dark
  • Party heels for a 2am start on a bleacher
  • A swimsuit alone through the Atlantis lobby
  • Bare arms at 2am with the Nor'wester blowing

Frequently asked questions

The coolest month of the year, and still warm by day. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology's 1991–2020 table for Lynden Pindling International Airport (78073) gives January a mean high of 78.9°F (26.1°C) and a low of 18.2°C, with 45mm of rain on 7 days and 7.3 hours of sunshine a day. The mean at 7am is 20.0°C, the lowest minimum on the table is 7.9°C, and the department's record for New Providence is 41.4°F, set on 20 January 1981. Sunrise stays near 6:55am all month, while sunset moves from 5:31pm on 1 January to 5:53pm on the 31st. The sea off New Providence averages about 24.3°C in January, on NOAA's OISST record.

For New Year's Eve and the 2am parade: a coral linen tee, white slim jeans, white leather low-tops, a navy packable windbreaker and a coral zip crossbody. For the beach once a front has passed: a hot-pink one-piece, a white cotton button-down to wear over it and gold flat sandals. That covers a 26.1°C afternoon, a night that falls to 18°C / 64°F, and the Nor'wester that follows each cold front.

2am on 1 January, under the National Junkanoo Committee's 2025/26 rules, which started the Boxing Day parade at 9pm on Christmas night. The 2027 parade, on Friday 1 January, belongs to the new National Junkanoo Authority, which had not published its times by 26 October 2026. Seats were easier to find than for Boxing Day: in mid-December 2025 Tanya Bain of ALIV said "New Year's Day Parade is wide open and it's ready to be sold". In 2026 the results came out that afternoon, with One Family first on 594 points after a two-point penalty.

Early January for Junkanoo, late January for the marathon. The New Year's Day parade fills the first morning, and the Educulture Junkanoo Museum on West Street, which Arlene Nash-Ferguson set up in her childhood home, opens Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm. Run Bahamas starts at 6am on Sunday 31 January 2027 from Goodman's Bay. The days lengthen through the month, with sunset moving from 5:31pm to 5:53pm. Cold fronts arrive all month; the Bahamas Department of Meteorology puts them about five days apart in winter.

Yes, a little. The Bahamas Department of Meteorology's table gives January 26.1°C by day and 18.2°C at night, 0.8°C and 1.3°C below December, with the same 7 rain days; December is the drier month by a whisker (1.70 against 1.76 inches). The sea cools from about 25.3°C to 24.3°C. The parades differ too: in 2025 the Boxing Day parade began at 9pm on Christmas night and its seats sold first, while the New Year's Day parade started at 2am on 1 January 2026. Our December guide covers the Christmas-night parade.

A light layer for the days after a front, and two pieces of Bahamian history to look for. The Tribune's 2023 profile of Arlene Nash-Ferguson, founder of the Educulture Junkanoo Museum, records that "Junkanoo returned on New Year’s Day 1948" after six years without parading on Bay Street, and she marks that parade as the start of modern Junkanoo. Off the route, look for Androsia batik. Rosi Birch started it on Andros in the late 1960s, and it "took off as the unofficial national fabric of The Bahamas" when the country became independent in 1973. It is still waxed, hand-dyed and sewn on Andros.
