What to Wear in Milan in December
Milan in December: 8°C / 46°F days, 1°C / 34°F nights, and La Scala's opening night on Sant'Ambrogio, when every coat goes to the cloakroom.
- Ivory wool coat, below the knee. La Scala sends coats to its free cloakroom, and you still need wool for a night that falls to 1°C / 34°F
- Medium-grey crew-neck knit. Once the coat is checked, it is the top the foyer sees
- Black wide-leg trousers. Dark enough for the stalls, wide enough for opaque tights underneath
- Opaque black tights. About 15 nights at Linate drop to freezing, and tights add nothing you have to check
- Black rubber-soled ankle boots. Rain falls on about 8 days, and a smooth leather sole slips on wet paving
- Mid-grey wool scarf. Hats go to La Scala's cloakroom, so the scarf does the hat's work outside
- A tank top under the coat for a warm auditorium. La Scala refuses tank tops and shorts and does not refund the ticket
- Arriving on the hour. Doors open 45 minutes early, and latecomers wait in the foyer until the first break
- A resold ticket for 7 December. The opening is sold out, and La Scala names its own website as the only safe channel
- A hat you meant to keep on inside. The cloakroom rule names hats, umbrellas and bags
Dress for the cloakroom. NOAA's record for Linate puts December at 7.6°C / 46°F by day and 0.6°C at night, with frost on about 15 nights and rain on about 8 days, and ARPA Lombardia calls the Po plain a place of cold winters. The week that matters is Sant'Ambrogio. La Scala opens its season on the 7th, and its house rules send coats, hats, umbrellas and bags to a free cloakroom and turn away tank tops and shorts. So the coat is for the street. The knit, the trousers and the tights are what the foyer sees, and what you stand in at a free screening if you have no ticket.
On 7 December the coat comes off at La Scala and stays off. What you wear underneath is the outfit.
The capsule
01Ivory wool coat, notch lapel, below the kneeLa Scala's box office asks you to leave coats at its free cloakroom, and the stalls and balconies each have their own. You still need wool for the walk to Piazza della Scala on a night that falls to 1°C / 34°F. Ivory reads clearly over the grey knit and the black trousers, and a below-knee hem keeps the wind off your legs while you queue.
02Medium-grey crew-neck knitOnce the coat is checked, this is the top the foyer sees. A crew neck lies flat under a notch lapel without bunching, and medium grey keeps the ivory coat and the black trousers in separate tones. Choose a fine gauge: with the coat at the cloakroom, this one layer is your warmth and your outfit.
03Black wide-leg trousers, turned cuffFull length clears La Scala's dress code, which turns away shorts and keeps the ticket, and the wide leg leaves room for opaque tights on a frost night. Black hides a splash from a wet tram stop. The turned cuff sits clear of the boot, and a single button means no belt to fight with at the cloakroom desk.
04Opaque black tightsLinate records frost on about 15 December nights, and Brera, in the centre, is only about 2°C kinder. Opaque tights under the wide trousers carry you through a queue outside the theatre on a night heading for 1°C / 34°F, or an evening at the Oh Bej! stalls, which in 2025 stayed open until 9pm. They add nothing you have to check.
05Black leather ankle boots, side zip, rubber soleRain falls on about 8 December days at Linate, and on about 4 of them more than 2.5 mm. A smooth leather sole slips on wet paving and tram rails, and a thin rubber tread grips both. A low boot with a side zip comes off quickly in a hotel lobby and still sits right under black trousers in the stalls at La Scala.
06Small silver metallic crossbodyYesMilano writes that on the First Night "crowds gather in front of the theatre to catch a glimpse of the glitterati entering the foyer", and the UK Foreign Office warns of pickpocketing at major tourist attractions. A small bag with a top zip stays shut in that crowd. La Scala's cloakroom rule names bags, so it goes in with the coat. Silver is the one bright note.
07Narrow mid-grey wool scarfHats are on La Scala's cloakroom list, so the scarf does the hat's work on the street and goes in with the coat at the desk. Wound once, it closes the gap between the crew neck and the lapel on a night that falls to 1°C / 34°F. Mid-grey sits next to the knit without a second pattern.
08Black leather gloves, lined, short cuffHands come out of pockets at the Oh Bej! stalls, where YesMilano listed sellers of firunatt, strings of smoked chestnuts, in 2025, and again at the cloakroom desk with a ticket in hand. A short lined leather glove leaves the fingers free for a phone and a card on a frost night. Black disappears against the coat and the trousers.
Day to night
Grey crew, black wide trousers, opaque tights, ivory coat, mid-grey scarf, rubber-soled ankle boots, silver bag across the body. Prada's 1913 shop in the Galleria in the morning, then the Oh Bej! stalls around the Castello if the 2026 fair keeps the 2025 dates of 5 to 8 December.
Same knit and trousers, coat and bag at the cloakroom. On the 7th the doors open at 5:15pm for Otello at 6pm; without a ticket, the Galleria showed the 2025 opening live on a free screen. Coat and boots back on for the walk home.
A suggested look — ivory wool coat, grey crew-neck knit, mid-grey wool scarf, black wide-leg trousers, black leather ankle boots.
What to avoid
- A tank top under the coat. No entry, and no refund
- A hat in the auditorium. It goes to the cloakroom
- A resold ticket for the 7th. The opening is sold out
- Arriving at 6pm for a 6pm start. Latecomers wait for the first break
- A smooth leather sole. About 8 wet days
Frequently asked questions
Cold at night and often frosty. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Milano Linate, an Italian Air Force weather station about 7 km east of the Duomo, gives a December high of 7.6°C / 46°F and a low of 0.6°C, with frost on about 15 nights and rain on about 8 days. The city-centre Brera station, 17 Decembers in the same archive, runs near 2.9°C at night and records about 60 mm of rain. ARPA Lombardia, which holds a Milan series back to 1763, describes the Po plain's climate as one of "inverni freddi ed estati molto calde", cold winters and very hot summers. Daylight runs from 9h 00m on 1 December, sunrise 7:42 and sunset 16:42, to 8h 42m at the solstice.
An ivory wool coat, a medium-grey crew-neck knit, black wide-leg trousers, opaque black tights, black rubber-soled ankle boots, a small silver crossbody, a mid-grey wool scarf and lined black leather gloves. That covers an 8°C / 46°F afternoon, a night that falls to 1°C / 34°F, a queue at the fair or outside the theatre, and the layer left once La Scala has taken the coat. Leave the stick umbrella at home: it ends the evening at the cloakroom.
The 7th is the feast of Sant'Ambrogio, the city's patron, and the night La Scala opens its season. YesMilano writes: "Since 1951, at the behest of Victor De Sabata, the director at that time, the La Scala season opens on December 7th." In 2026 the opening is Verdi's Otello, a new production, at 6pm on Monday 7 December, and it is sold out; La Scala notes the opera was "composed for La Scala in 1887". Doors open 45 minutes before, and "Latecomers will be asked to wait in the Foyer until the first break in the performance before taking their seats." The dress rule is short: no tank tops or shorts, and the Italian version adds flip-flops. Coats, hats, umbrellas and bags go to the free cloakroom. Without a ticket, watch on a screen: in 2025 the Prima Diffusa showed the opening live and free in more than 30 places, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II among them.
Early, if the 7th is the reason you came. Otello has an UNDER30 preview on 4 December 2026 and the sold-out opening on the 7th; in 2025 the Oh Bej! fair ran 5 to 8 December, and YesMilano records the Piazza Duomo tree being switched on at 6pm on 6 December 2025. The Milanese, it adds, traditionally decorate their own trees on the 7th. If you want a seat rather than a screen, look at the later performances, which run to 5 January 2027 and were still on sale in late October; availability changes daily, so check La Scala's own site. Late December keeps the opera and leaves the patron-saint week behind.
January is colder at night and spent on the street. NOAA's Linate record gives December 7.6°C / 46°F by day and 0.6°C at night, with frost on about 15 nights, and January 7.4°C / 45°F and −0.4°C, with frost on about 19 nights. December is built around Sant'Ambrogio and a coat you hand over at La Scala, so this capsule keeps the ivory coat, the silver bag and the grey scarf. Our January guide swaps in a brown check coat, a cream turtleneck, a burgundy crew and shearling-lined lug boots for the giorni della merla, and January is when Lombardy's winter sales open.
A good coat, then whatever still looks considered once the coat is off. Prada's own history says: "Prada was founded in Milan in 1913 by Mario Prada, Miuccia Prada's grandfather," in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and in 1919 it became official supplier to the Italian Royal Household. Of the opening night YesMilano writes: "The display of fine clothes and stunning jewellery easily competes with the spectacular entertainment onstage." Inside, La Scala's rules do the editing: no tank tops or shorts, and every coat left at the cloakroom. On the street, until you reach the cloakroom desk, the coat is the outfit.
