What to Wear in Venice in December

Pack two pairs of boots and one warm coat. NOAA's Tessera airport record gives Venice's December 8°C / 46°F by day and 1.2°C / 34°F at night, with 61mm across about 8 rain days. The Biennale closed on 22 November; the high-water season did not. The Autorità per la Laguna closed the MOSE barriers on 4 and 5 December 2025, and from 8 to 11 December 2024. What remains on the calendar is Christmas and La Fenice, with Alevtina Ioffe conducting on 4 to 6 December and Gianandrea Noseda's New Year's Concert from 29 December to 1 January. Sunset stays near 4:30pm all month. So: a navy wool coat over a cotton cardigan and a blouse, oat wool trousers, rubber boots for the water and leather for the rest.

   Navy double-breasted wool coat, knee length

   Nights at 1°C / 34°F need wool, and a double-breasted front puts two layers of it across your chest on an open vaporetto deck. Knee length covers the top of the rubber boots on a tide morning and the brogue boots at night. Navy with peak lapels works on a fondamenta at eight in the morning and at La Fenice's 30 December concert at five.

   Rust-orange cotton V-neck cardigan, button front

   Wear it buttoned under the coat outdoors and on its own indoors, where a heavy wool knit is too much after the walk in from the cold. Cotton at a V-neck lets the cream blouse and the silk scarf show at the throat. Rust is the one bright colour among navy, cream, oat, olive and brown, and it keeps a dark winter capsule from reading as a uniform.

   Cream cotton long-sleeve blouse, crew neck

   Long sleeves matter at La Fenice, which asks for no shorts or sleeveless tops at afternoon shows, and two of Noseda's New Year concerts start at 4pm on 31 December and 11:15am on 1 January. A cream cotton crew-neck blouse meets that under the rust cardigan and looks finished once the coat is off. Tuck it into the oat trousers for the concert.

   Heather-oat wool straight trousers, pressed front

   Wool rather than cotton, because the walk home after the 5pm concert on 30 December is in the dark, with the night heading for 1°C / 34°F. La Fenice allows a shirt and jeans on ordinary evenings, so pressed wool clears the rule with room to spare. A straight leg tucks into the rubber boots on a tide morning, and heather oat sits between the navy coat and the brown boots.

   Olive rubber knee-high rain boots

   The MOSE barriers closed on 8 to 11 December 2024 and on 4 and 5 December 2025, so the tide season is still running when you arrive, and a tide that stays below a closure still reaches the lowest squares. Olive rubber to the knee lets you cross a wet campo with the oat trousers tucked in. La Fenice asks for rubber boots from 100 cm, concert night or not.

   Brown leather lace-up brogue boots, lug sole

   Your other pair, for every morning the tide forecast stays low. A lug sole grips wet stone on the bridges after any of the 8 rain days, and laced leather to the ankle is warmer at 1°C / 34°F than a loafer. For the Venetian version, Giovanna Zanella makes boots to measure in her workshop near the Rialto Bridge.

   Dark brown leather saddle crossbody, flap front, brass buckle

   Across the body and under the coat, it leaves both hands free for the vaporetto rail and your pockets on a cold deck. The flap closes with a brass buckle over a phone, a card and a concert ticket. Dark brown matches the brogue boots so the two leathers read as one, and it is small enough to keep with you when La Fenice takes the big bags.

   Cream-and-navy patterned silk square scarf

   Knot it at the throat where the double-breasted lapels leave a gap, and the coat holds its heat on the walk home from La Fenice. A silk square packs flat and ties the navy coat to the cream blouse in one pattern. For the 30 December concert it turns a blouse and cardigan into an evening outfit without a change of clothes.
