What to Wear in Rome in December
Rome in December: 13°C / 55°F afternoons, 5°C / 41°F nights, about 12 wet days, and a month spent inside churches with a dress code.
- Espresso long wool coat — warm for the street, and you carry it through St Peter's, which has no cloakroom
- Burgundy cable cardigan — covers your shoulders once the coat is off
- Cream wool stole — shoulders covered over anything sleeveless at a Christmas Mass
- Cranberry pleated midi skirt — St Peter's asks for skirts below knee length
- Dark brown rubber-soled ankle boots — wet sampietrini on about 12 rainy days
- Terracotta folding umbrella — the Vatican Museums check full-size ones
- Bare shoulders or a hem above the knee — St Peter's and the Vatican Museums turn you away
- A full-size stick umbrella — it goes to the Museums' cloakroom and stays there
- The Vatican Museums on 8, 25 or 26 December — closed
- A hat inside — the Vatican Museums list hats among items not permitted
Dress for the inside. NOAA's 30-year record for Ciampino puts December at 12.8°C by day and 4.7°C at night, with about 103mm of rain on roughly 12 days. That is mild enough for the street in a wool coat. The question is what happens indoors, because December in Rome is a month of churches: the Immacolata at Piazza di Spagna on the 8th, the nativity scenes, Christmas Masses at St Peter's. The basilica lists its dress policy plainly, "long or below-knee trousers; skirts below knee length; covered shoulders for all visitors", and says there is "no cloakroom service available inside Saint Peter's Basilica at the moment". The Vatican Museums keep medium and large umbrellas at their own cloakroom. So whatever you wear in comes with you: a coat you can carry, a layer under it that covers your shoulders, a hem below the knee, and an umbrella that folds into a bag.
December in Rome is spent indoors, and indoors means churches. Whatever you wear through the door of St Peter's comes with you, because there is nowhere to leave it.
The capsule
01Espresso long wool coat, notch lapelAt 5°C / 41°F on a December evening a long wool coat is the right weight for the street, and in Rome it is also the coat you will carry indoors. St Peter's has no cloakroom at the moment, so pick one that folds over an arm without dragging on the floor and does not crumple. Espresso brown sits under the burgundy and cranberry of the rest of this capsule and hides splashes from wet sampietrini.
02Deep burgundy chunky cable-knit cardiganOnce the coat comes off inside a church, the layer underneath has to cover your shoulders by itself; St Peter's asks for covered shoulders for all visitors. A buttoned cable cardigan does that and keeps you warm in a marble nave. Wear it over a fine top so you can open it in a heated trattoria, and pick burgundy because it hides a splash of wine at a long Christmas lunch.
03Cream brushed-wool stole, fringedThis is the piece that lets you wear something sleeveless to a Christmas dinner and still walk into a Mass afterwards. Draped over both shoulders, a stole meets the basilica's rule; wound round the neck, it is a scarf for the walk home along the Tiber at night. Cream lifts the espresso coat and folds flat into the bag.
04Cranberry sunray-pleated midi skirtSt Peter's asks for "skirts below knee length", and the Vatican Museums list miniskirts among the garments not permitted, so a midi is the safe length for every church on the itinerary. Sunray pleats move when you walk up the Spanish Steps and do not crease on a pew. With the stole and the ankle boots it is the Christmas Eve outfit.
05Dark chocolate wool flannel wide-leg trousersFor the days that are not about churches, trousers that still pass the basilica's rule of long or below-knee: wool flannel, cut wide, to the ankle. Flannel holds warmth at 5°C / 41°F without the bulk of a thermal, and chocolate brown carries the espresso coat down to the boots in one colour.
06Dark brown leather ankle boots, side zip, rubber soleRome's sampietrini are blocks of leucitite, Treccani notes, and on about 12 rainy December days the stone turns slick. A rubber sole grips where leather slides, and a side zip means the boots come on and off without a struggle on a hotel step. Ankle height clears both the midi skirt and the wide trousers.
07Terracotta folding umbrella, wooden handleBring a folding one, not a stick. The Vatican Museums say medium and large or non-telescopic umbrellas must be left at their cloakroom, and if you walk on to St Peter's afterwards you are told not to leave your bags behind. A compact umbrella goes into the bag instead. December rain at Ciampino comes in bursts, about 7 days of it heavier than 2.5mm, so you will use it.
08Burgundy structured top-handle bag with a shoulder strapSt Peter's recommends "only small backpacks or small personal bags", and the UK Foreign Office warns of bag-snatching and pickpocketing in Italian city centres and at major attractions. A small structured bag with a turn-lock, worn across the body on its strap, answers both. It holds the folding umbrella, a phone and a card, and closes properly in a crowded nave.
Day to night
Burgundy cardigan · chocolate wool trousers · espresso coat · dark brown ankle boots · burgundy bag across the body · folding umbrella inside. St Peter's at 7am opening before the queue, the 100 Presepi under the colonnade if it returns this year, then Via del Corso as its lights come on at dusk.
Cranberry midi skirt · cream stole over the shoulders · cardigan · espresso coat over the arm indoors. Dinner in Monti at 8:30pm and, on Christmas Eve, the walk to St Peter's for the night Mass; in 2025 it began at 10pm.
A suggested look — espresso long wool coat, burgundy cable-knit cardigan, cream wool stole, cranberry pleated midi skirt, dark brown leather ankle boots.
What to avoid
- Bare shoulders or a hem above the knee — the basilica and the Museums turn you away
- A full-size stick umbrella — the Museums check it
- The Vatican Museums on 8, 25 and 26 December — closed
- Leather soles — wet sampietrini on about 12 days
- A backpack or an open tote at crowded sites — pickpockets
Frequently asked questions
Mild by day, cold at night and often wet. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Roma Ciampino, the Aeronautica Militare station 15km southeast of the centre, gives an average December high of 12.8°C and a low of 4.7°C, about 103mm of rain on roughly 12 days, and about 7 days with more than 2.5mm. Ciampino records frost on about three nights; the historic centre runs a little warmer. Daylight shrinks from 9h 22m on 1 December to 9h 07m at the solstice, with sunset close to 4:40pm all month.
An espresso long wool coat, a burgundy cable cardigan, a cream wool stole, a cranberry pleated midi skirt, chocolate wool wide-leg trousers, dark brown rubber-soled ankle boots, a folding umbrella and a small structured bag with a strap. That covers a 13°C / 55°F afternoon walk, a 5°C / 41°F evening, and every church dress code in the city. Leave the stick umbrella, the miniskirt and the backpack at home.
The same as the rest of the year, and enforced. St Peter's Basilica asks for "long or below-knee trousers; skirts below knee length; covered shoulders for all visitors", and says it currently has no cloakroom, so bring only a small bag. The Vatican Museums also bar sleeveless and low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats, and check medium and large umbrellas. The basilica is open 7am to 7pm from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027. In 2025 Pope Leo XIV celebrated the Christmas night Mass at 10pm on 24 December and gave the Urbi et Orbi blessing at noon on the 25th; the 2026 times are not published yet.
The feast of the Immacolata, a public holiday. At 7am a firefighter climbs the column in Piazza Mignanelli to lay flowers on the statue of Mary, Turismo Roma says, and in the afternoon the Pope traditionally comes to Piazza di Spagna for the act of veneration; in 2025 Pope Leo XIV left the Vatican at 3:30pm and received a tribute from the Via Condotti merchants. Expect a dense crowd on cobbles for an hour or more: wear the boots and the long coat, and note that the Vatican Museums are closed that day.
Early-to-mid December, for most visitors. The Immacolata on 8 December usually opens the Christmas season, with Via del Corso lit along 1.8km in 2025, the Piazza Navona market and the 100 Presepi nativity exhibition under Bernini's colonnade, which ran from 8 December 2025 to 6 January 2026. The Vatican Museums close on 8, 25 and 26 December, and the first Sunday, 6 December, is a free day at state museums. Late December brings Christmas Masses and New Year's Eve, when in 2025 the free Capodanno concert at the Circo Massimo opened at 9:30pm.
About the same temperature, wetter, and darker. NOAA's Ciampino record gives December 12.8°C by day and 4.7°C at night, January 11.9°C and 3.5°C, with about 12 wet days against 9. December's thesis is indoors: churches, dress codes and the coat you carry, so this guide leans on a stole, a midi skirt and a folding umbrella. January turns drier and windier, with the cold, clear tramontana and the winter sales, which is why our January guide swaps them for a double-breasted coat, gloves and sunglasses.
Long dark coats, leather and good knitwear, in the colours of the city's own houses. Fendi was established in Rome in 1925 by Adele and Edoardo Fendi, with a first boutique on Via del Plebiscito, and Bvlgari was founded in the heart of Rome in 1884; its boutique stands at Via Condotti 10. On 8 December the Via Condotti merchants pay a tribute to the Pope as he passes Trinità dei Monti, which tells you how central the street is to the city's idea of dressing well. Expect Romans to be more dressed up than visitors.
