TL;DR

Milan in January: 7°C / 45°F days, 0°C / 32°F nights, the year's most frost nights, and the giorni della merla at the end.

Do
  • Brown houndstooth wool coat, below the knee. It buttons over two knits on about 19 frost mornings
  • Cream fine-rib turtleneck. It closes the neck on a night that falls to 0°C / 32°F and stays on in a heated shop
  • Burgundy lambswool crew. The second knit for fog days, when the temperature barely moves from zero
  • Light grey pleated wide-leg trousers. The wide leg takes a thermal layer underneath on the coldest mornings
  • Black shearling-collar lug boots. Shearling for the frost, a lug for about 7 wet days
  • Burgundy leather gloves, lined. Hands are out at shop windows and tram stops on frost mornings
Don't
  • Dressing for the 7°C / 45°F average on a fog day. ARPA Lombardia found it hovering around zero inside the fog, day and night
  • Reading the giorni della merla as the only cold days. Linate's frost runs all month
  • Clothes shopping in the days before the sales open. Lombardy bars promotional discounts for 30 days before the start
  • A smooth leather sole on a frost morning. About 19 nights drop to freezing and about 7 days are wet

January is the coldest month at Linate and the one with the most frost. NOAA's record gives 7.4°C / 45°F by day and −0.4°C at night, with frost on about 19 nights, and ARPA Lombardia says the Po plain's frost days peak between January and February. Fog is the other cold: on 9 January 2020 ARPA found the temperature inside a fog layer over the plain "oscillando intorno a zero gradi", barely moving between night and day. Treccani's giorni della merla, the last three days, are folklore laid over that. Pack one coat for the 5th and the 29th, two knits, and boots with a lining and a lug.

Pack for 29 January the way you pack for the 5th. Linate's frost does not wait for the nickname.

The capsule

  1. brown cream houndstooth wool coat
    01
Brown houndstooth wool coat, below the knee

Linate averages −0.4°C at night in January, with about 19 frost nights, so the coat buttons over two knits. A small brown-on-cream houndstooth carries the chocolate bag and the burgundy knits as one palette and shows road spray less than a pale coat would. Below the knee, it covers the trousers down to the boot; on a 7°C / 45°F afternoon it hangs open.

  2. cream fine-rib turtleneck
    02
    Cream fine-rib turtleneck

A high neck closes the gap a coat collar leaves on a night that falls to 0°C / 32°F. Fine rib sits flat under the check coat without a roll of fabric at the throat, and cream is the one light tone in a brown and burgundy capsule. It is the piece that stays on in a heated shop when the coat and the crew come off.

  3. deep burgundy lambswool crew
    03
    Deep burgundy lambswool crew

Wear it over the turtleneck on frost mornings and on fog days: ARPA Lombardia found that inside the fog "la temperatura varia di poco tra la notte e il giorno", so the afternoon stays near zero. On a clear day it comes off by lunch and folds into the bag. Burgundy is the colour the gloves and the beret repeat.

  4. light grey pleated wide-leg trousers
    04
    Light grey pleated wide-leg trousers

Pleated, wide and full length, they cover the ankle down to the boot collar and leave room for a thermal legging underneath on the merla mornings. The warmth sits in the layers around them: two knits, a coat that falls below the knee, shearling at the ankle. Light grey lifts a capsule of brown and burgundy, and the pleats read as tailoring at a shop counter.

  5. black shearling-collar lug boots
    05
Black leather lace-up boots, shearling collar, lug sole

Shearling at the collar is for mornings below freezing, and the lug is for about 7 wet days, 3 or so of them heavier than 2.5 mm. Laces and a block heel hold the foot through a long walking day from the Duomo to Brera. They are slower in a fitting room, so loosen the laces before a sales day.

  6. chocolate pebbled leather zip crossbody
    06
    Chocolate pebbled leather zip bag

With gloves on, you want a bag that stays shut without a hand on it: a zip, and a short strap worn across the body. The UK Foreign Office warns of pickpocketing in Italian city centres and asks you to take care in crowded areas. Chocolate pebbled leather sits beside the brown check coat instead of fighting it, and holds a phone, a card and folded receipts.

  7. burgundy lined leather gloves
    07
    Burgundy leather gloves, lined

On a frost morning your hands are out at shop windows, ticket machines and the tram stop. A lined leather glove in the burgundy of the crew keeps the wrist covered when the coat sleeve rides up, and a short cuff still lets you take a card out of the zip bag at the till without pulling the glove off.

  8. burgundy wool beret
    08
    Plain burgundy wool beret

On a frost morning the ears feel it first, and inside a winter fog the air stays near zero all day. A plain wool beret in the crew's burgundy, with no badge and no logo, sits flat on the head under any coat collar and stays on between shops and on the walk to dinner. It folds into the bag in a heated shop without creasing.

Day to night

Morning

Both knits, light grey trousers, brown check coat buttoned, shearling lug boots, burgundy beret and gloves, chocolate bag across the body. Out at shop opening on a sales morning; on a fog day, keep the crew on until evening.

Evening

Coat open and crew in the bag through a warm shop, then the crew back on for dinner in Navigli as the night heads toward 0°C / 32°F. On the 29th, 30th and 31st, keep both knits on all day.

A suggested look — brown check wool coat, cream ribbed turtleneck, burgundy crew knit, light grey pleated trousers, black shearling-collar lug boots.

What to avoid

  • Dressing for 7°C / 45°F on a fog day. Inside the fog it stays near zero
  • A smooth leather sole. Frost on about 19 nights, rain on about 7 days
  • Treating 29 to 31 January as the only cold days. The saying is not the measurement
  • Shopping just before the sales open. No promotional discounts for 30 days
  • An open tote in a crowded shop. Pickpockets work city centres

Frequently asked questions

The coldest month of the year at Linate, and the one with the most frost. NOAA NCEI's 30-year record for Milano Linate, an Italian Air Force weather station east of the city, gives a January high of 7.4°C / 45°F and a low of −0.4°C, with frost on about 19 nights and rain on about 7 days. Brera, in the centre, covers 18 Januaries in NOAA's monthly archive and runs near 2.0°C at night, with about 8 frost nights; ARPA Lombardia notes that frost days are falling across the plain, most visibly in Milan, which it ties to the urban heat island. Fog is frequent in winter, and inside it the temperature hovers around zero day and night. Sunrise on 1 January is 8:03 and sunset 16:50; by the 31st the sun sets at 17:27.

A brown houndstooth wool coat, a cream fine-rib turtleneck, a burgundy lambswool crew, light grey pleated wide-leg trousers, black shearling-collar lug boots, a chocolate zip bag, burgundy leather gloves and a plain burgundy wool beret. That covers a 7°C / 45°F afternoon, a night that falls to 0°C / 32°F, a fog day that stays near zero, and the last three days of the month. Add a thin thermal layer under the trousers if you run cold, and leave smooth-soled shoes at home.

Two calendars, at opposite ends of the month. Treccani defines the giorni della merla as an "espressione di origine lombarda" for the last three days of January, "ritenuti i più freddi dell'anno". That is the saying; NOAA's Linate figures are monthly averages, and the frost does not wait for the 29th. The sales follow a regional rule. Regione Lombardia starts them on "il primo giorno feriale antecedente l'Epifania", the first working day before Epiphany, for up to 60 days. Epiphany 2027 falls on Wednesday 6 January, so the rule points to Tuesday 5 January; the region confirms each season's date, and until it does, the 5th is the rule's answer, not an announcement. In 2026, when that day was a Monday, a 2016 clause moved the start to Saturday 3 January. The regional commerce law also bars promotional sales of clothes in the 30 days before the start.

Early January for the sales and Epiphany, mid-January for the menswear shows, late January for the merla. The rule points to the sales opening on Tuesday 5 January, Epiphany is the 6th, and La Scala's Otello plays its last dates on 2 and 5 January. Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana lists Milano Moda Uomo for 15 to 19 January 2027, starting on the day Pitti Uomo closes in Florence after its 12 to 15 January run, so mid-month belongs to menswear in both cities. Late January brings the giorni della merla and more light: sunset moves from 16:50 on the 1st to 17:27 on the 31st. The coat stays the same all month.

Colder, with more frost and fewer wet days. NOAA's Linate record gives January 7.4°C / 45°F by day and −0.4°C at night, with frost on about 19 nights and rain on about 7 days; December is 7.6°C / 46°F and 0.6°C, with about 15 frost nights and 8 wet days. Our December guide is built around Sant'Ambrogio and a coat you hand over at La Scala, with an ivory coat, a silver bag and a grey scarf. January keeps you in the coat on the street, so this capsule swaps in a brown check coat, a cream turtleneck, a burgundy crew and shearling-lined lug boots.

A long brown or grey coat over two knits, and shoes that can take a wet pavement. Giorgio Armani's own history says "Giorgio Armani was founded in 1975 in Milan". 10 Corso Como, founded in 1991, writes that it "was born in Milan in a garage", a working garage at number 10 Corso Como turned into a shop, a gallery and a bookstore. What changes in January is the layer count: two knits on a frost morning, one inside a heated shop, and the coat back on for the walk.
